Today in my storage area I saw a rather large spider that kind of looked like this:

Spider-in-basement-Ontario-Small.JPG

except it's legs looked a little hairier and I don't remember that white mark on it's back. As I leaned in to see it closer, it just kind of stood it's ground and raised it's pinchers up.

I thought, "Oh no, you didn't" and turned to grab the broom. However he escaped behind some boxes of Curtis Marvel mags and endless invoices earmarked for my accountant this spring.

It got me thinking: What is the safest way to eliminate spiders and bugs from a storage area without harming your comics?

In doing some research... I think it looks to have been a Wolf Spider.

That might explain some of the dead crickets I occasionally find in the unit. That spider thinks I'm invading his personal space.

Probably a wolf spider. Sounds too large to be a brown recluse - which has a nasty poisonous bite.

Most pest control places will simply set out sticky traps. That would be my suggestion.

And yes...a floor vac is also a stellar plan.

Good luck. I can't stand spiders.

As long as it didn't look like this. If it was more like this, watch any exposed skin.

They'll be alive when you open the lid... and they can jump.

Floor Vacs must look like giant science fiction space machines to Wolf Spiders. I like that.

Thinking the same way.

I had a soldier that had to have skin cut away after a bite.

Give the vacuum hose a shot of insect killer spray right before turning the vacuum cleaner off. Wait 5 minutes, dead spiders don't jump.

:)

They should have a reverse button, so I can take it outside and shoot it across the street.
