Hey everybody.  Been lurking for a while after a couple friends mentioned they use the boards a lot.  Always ready to expand my knowledge and look for harder to find books.

Been a collector since I was a wee lad, working in a comic book store as a teen, taking a few breaks and then returning to the hobby after moving halfway across the country.

Over the years my collecting focus has changed and I now almost exclusively collect Gold/Silver/Bronze.  I'll occasionally pick up a newer book if it looks interesting but by and large, they just don't seem to have the magic I love.

Looking forward to further adventures!

Hi everyone,

Thought I'd introduce myself. I have been lurking here for a few years now, really appreciating all that be learned from the Boards!

I have been reading comics since age 4, and collecting since 7. At now age 50 that seems like a very long time...currently have at least 20,000 books spread over 2 cities (many back home in Winnipeg, Canada).

As a kid I loved and collected especially the Legion of Super-Heroes, X-Men, New Teen Titans, Daredevil, Spider-Man, Captain Canuck, Ghost Rider, Batman, Superman, Flash, Justice League of America, Avengers, Micronauts, Manhunter, Crisis on Infinite Earlths, Watchmen, Thor, Swamp Thing, Firestorm, Miracleman, Valiant books, the Spectre, the Question...just about any superhero book from the era really. In middle age I delved more into Silver and Golden Age, developed more of an appreciation for Jack Kirby (especially his DC's and the Fourth World trilogy books), and in recent years have really appreciated the writing in books like Uber and weird out of genre stuff like Gideon Falls. Loved collecting favourite artists like Byrne, Perez, Miller, Simonson, Broderick, Guice, Lee, and many more. Can remember lots of great and funny times - including sadly when a cocky 15 year old turned down half a dozen high grade Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 copies the day they came out! (how could a black and white poorly-drawn funny animal parody book ever be successful, right?🙄 - but taught me you can never know for sure what will become hot in collecting comics!)

Though planned on keeping my books forever, post-divorce and raising 3 wonderful kids this changed and needed to start selling. All the Golden Age and Silver Age are now gone, but mostly have been able to hold on to the books with the most sentimental feelings from childhood. Funny how that feels different. And what a incredible feeling to read your favourites from your childhood to your own kids and watch their eyes widen as they fall in love with the characters, stories and art too!

It was a pleasant surprise to discover that selling is almost as much fun as reading and collecting! All of a sudden I learnt so much more - everything from what's in demand, to the intricacies of grading, to much more of the history of comics, to all the different options for selling, to the specifics and history of variants. More interesting than I could have imagined! And what a thrill to mine my collection and find so many books I had forgotten about or never even knew I had - like signed books, and a number of rare and scarce variants and error versions. It almost feels like finding buried treasure! Thank you so much for everyone who's taught me so much. If anyone out there is a longtime collector thinking about getting into selling, I certainly recommend it - it's been quite the thrilling ride for me! And you can get to know so many more really interesting and good people who really love comics!

In case anyone may be interested, I've got a pretty rare (only 9 copies on census) Canadian Price Variant ASM Annual #16 up for auction this weekend (link and description in a previous post), and will put up a post about another Canadian Variant and other keys that I have up for auction this weekend. Along the way I've learnt a decent amount about Canadian Variants and am happy to answer any questions.

Thanks for the opportunity to join the Board community! Be well and have fun,

Adam

Thanks Two Piece.

Plan is to eventually have all the books back in Victoria, BC, but not logistically possible yet.

But there are a few bonuses to this - we head back to Winnipeg every year to visit family and enjoy a lot of time together. As part of the trip I get to look through all of my comics from 20-40 years ago and mine my most valuable ones. It’s a lot of fun, finding buried treasure in finding variants etc. and great books that I had long ago forgotten about!

Thanks Crops068!

Yes, cross country UHaul/camping trip with the kids planned for the years ahead! Anyone out there camped in the Canadian Rockies? So gorgeous!

Nope, only been into Canada at Niagra Falls once when I was like 8.  I thought it was cool though back then.

Well, the Rockies are amazing, as are Beautiful BC and the Wild West Coast out here! And I’m partial to the 10,000s of lakes of the Prairies where I’m from.

Are you in the States? A wonderful country that I’ve visited a lot, but still have scores of places to see on my list!
