Hi everyone

 

I have a bunch of vintage & modern original Marvel & DC color guides and comic proofs for sale.

 

These were all used in the creation of the original comics they represent - they are NOT from reprints, Masterworks, foreign editions etc.

 

These guides have all passed through the hands of the actual color artists, letterers and artists on these issues, and are extremely cool for those looking for an original piece from the comics they’ve read and to be close to the creation process. They also look great framed.

 

I plan to run this sales thread between the cycles of their Ebay auctions, so they will be available here exclusively during those times, and everything will be offered to the boards for cheaper than on Ebay.

 

Please feel free to make offers, I have more room on some guides than others, but will always give discounts for bulk purchases.

 

I will also contribute 25% towards the actual cost of Insured and Trackable airmail, which will vary depending on the color guide weight. Standard airmail is cheaper, but I can’t accept responsibility for guides sent uninsured.

What is Color Guide Art ?

 

Just like their original art counterpart color guides are a unique, one-of-a-kind, item and a key part in the production process of a comic.

 

Color guides are a photocopy of the original art that is hand painted by the colorist. The artist sometimes adds handwritten notes for directions on mood or tone, which shows how the finished comic artwork evolved through production.

 

This color guide is then used for the proofs / color separations. Some pieces will have color "codes" written on them to depict the actual color used for that part of the page or notes from the colorist to the separators. Others will either not have the codes or they will be on a separate overlay. The dimensions for colorist art are primarily 8.5" X 11".

They could be from Byrne, or someone else on the comic, but I haven't done any research to confirm this.

 

Each stage of the production, from the hand-painted guides to the proofs are used to get the comic looking exactly the way the creators envision it so you often do get hand-written notes from the artist.

 

Here's an example from Daredevil #225, when David Mazzuchelli is telling the color artist he wants dark, gloomy color tones used.
