Yeah, maybe my problem with her is that she's miscast for this role...but I've also found her work in her other blockbusters to be tonally flat and almost leaden. Just not my cup of tea, I guess.

I do agree with others that she was very good in 'Silver Linings Playbook', but didn't find her special in 'American Hustle' (that role felt like a caricature to me that she only occasionally lifted into something more). Haven't seen 'Joy' yet, but maybe will get a good vibe from her in that.

Dunno -- she's talented, but I keep wishing for her performances to impress or inspire me as a viewer. Just one opinion.

Dan

I like J-Law quite a bit (hometown girl!) but agree that she is miscast in these movies. And the character is as well. The take on Mystique from the original trilogy seemed perfect for the character. This version, not so much.

Reviews continue to be poisonous. Glad I decided to short it on HSX, I'm making a lot of fake money! :acclaim:

Mystique should have never had such a prominent role in these X-Men films.

I hope after this movie flops Fox can finally replace Singer with a decent director.

I agree with you on Mystique, but I don't wish the film to flop. I know it's not going to be all that good, but actually wishing for it to do bad isn't going to help the franchise any.

I would like to see the franchise succeed, but I really feel Singer has lost his vision with these characters. I can still watch and enjoy X2 but now with the focus primarily on Xavier, Magneto and Mystique, I just cant get into it. Maybe bad reviews and box office failure is what the franchise needs to get somebody new in charge.

Well hopefully Deadpool is going to show people how to make a real comic movie work.

So here's hoping Deadpool 2 delivers. And adding Cable, it's really going to have to. That's not a small step.

I actually like Jennifer Lawrence, but agree that she was miscast for X-Men from the get-go.

That said, as amazing as she was in Winter's Bone, Silver Linings Playbook and the first two Hunger Games movie, she was by _far_ the weakest link in American Hustle.

It was almost laughable how much better Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper, Christian Bale, Robert DeNiro and even (improbably) Jeremy Renner were than her in that film.

Granted - it didn't help that her character was 10-plus years older than her IRL but I was _really_ surprised how she paled compared to virtually everyone else.

Same thing - go back & watch Glengarry Glenn Ross.

Superb multi-Oscar winning cast but it's like literally everyone's an A-Lister (Al Pacino, Jonathan Pryce, Ed Harris, Alec Baldwin, Alan Arkin, and Jack Lemmon) and then Kevin Spacey opens his mouth like a cardboard robot.

He improved lightyears between that film & The Usual Suspects but it's incredible to see how he looks like he's reading his lines off a cue card vs. literally everyone else.

Well, I've been watching previews and I'll definitely be there to see it.

Other than WAAYYYYYY more jennifer lawrence than I care for (1 minute is to much) I think it looks good.

What's your issue with Jennifer Lawrence?

Far and away the most over-rated actress in the last 20 years.

Terrible physical presence for Mystique

Mystique is ultra athletic, with hyper reflexes, and moves with a fluid gracefulness

Jennifer is wide hipped, horsey, and moves with a plodding clumsiness (in her scenes when it's really her, and not the stunt double)

Rebecca Romijn was ten times better, and the perfect physical presence for the part.

Heck, anybody else would be better.

Jennifer IS NOT superhero material

Let her stick to girl next door type roles

Sorry, I don't think Rebecca Romijn could carry the heavy load of acting when Mystique has to make the choice of killing Trask at the end of "Days of Future Past." It takes more than a glare to convey conflict. :makepoint: She was literally being ripped apart from Charles interfering and her own destiny of actually killing Trask. Romijn would never pull it off and wind up looking like a mannequin. JLaw made us believe anything might happen in that moment. What's on page and conveyed believably onscreen is two different things.

Sorry, I gotta call a big meh on 99% of this post.

Kevin Spacey is great in every role that I've seen him in.

"Improved in light years since Usual Suspects"????

That is a classic 90's flick and Spacey was damn good in every respect.

Jennifer Lawrence was also great in Silver Linings Playbook, that happens to be one of my fav recent movies. She only had a supporting role in American Hustle, and for what her role consisted of, she did pretty well IMO.

Granted, I have not seen the new X-Men movie.

I don't really care to see it, either.

I wouldn't be too surprised if Lawrence and Spacey gave subpar performances, considering it isn't the sort of movie that requires any real depth and they both surely took their roles solely for the paycheck involved.

As far as this movie is concerned, all I care about is being able to sell the 9.8 raw copies of X-Men 316 (or 317, whichever is the 1st Blink) out of my $10 boxes at shows, that I never subbed to CGC before DOFP was put out....and selling a couple copies of X-Factor 5, after I get them graded at Wizard Philly. lol

I don't get the whole off pudding thing. Yeah it was a good zinger, but that show itself...WTF is that?

Between Two Ferns. Great stuff.

Not to my taste. Then again, I cannot stand Zack Galaflickingtus

I have to say that apart from 'Winter's Bone' I find Jennifer Lawrence to be only an adequate actress at best. She's "fine" to me, but nothing special. (But in a superhero film, fine is fine!)

Dan

She's had too many great roles since Winter's Bone to just be called an adequate actress. Take Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle and Joy for instance. She even dominated nothing roles in House at the End of the Street, The Beaver and Serena. Even after Room, you can't say that for Brie Larson in 22 Jump Street. If anything these franchise paycheck roles are dimming her star as she shows more range than some of these productions actually deserve.

Her performance in Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle were FAR above "adequate." Both movies had huge names in them, yet she outshined everyone else in both movies.

Her performance in American Hustle reminded me of the annoying role Sharon Stone played in Casino.

Golden Globe and Oscar voters agreed with you.

I like Rebecca Romijn for the same reason most of the rest of you do--as pretty as JLaw is, Rebecca Romijn has a prettier face and a better body. She fills the nude Mystique costume better than JLaw is capable of. JLaw matches Mystique from the comics better, however, in that she can deliver lines better than Romijn is capable of.

I was watching The Rogue Edition for the first time today and noticed what I like the best about JLaw in the role. It's her eyes. Even in those yellow contacts, her glance lingers on you (not a stare) after she decides on something and you think she's just gonna change her mind and kill everybody in the vincinity. It's a very playful glance (almost with a smile), fully aware of what she is capable of when your guard is down. Romijn (a sexpot in her own right) didn't have that, so her character always felt as predictable as that lady Terminator in T3. Plus I agree, her lines were too quick with no pay-off ("Because we shouldn't have to",) unless a generous co-star did the emotional heavy lifting to react to her.
