Fabulous book AJD - have you read the stories in another format? For the most part, they hold up really well.

Yes, I have the hardcover reprint from a few years ago. The 'preachies' are very good, and must have been pretty edgy at the time. One of them reads a lot like To Kill a Mockingbird, but predates it by several years. hm

This has only been on my want list for six years.

And here's the corresponding splash

It was definitely not the case that there were very fine people on both sides...

A six year search for number 6! Great looking book, well done AJD :applause:

That Grand Master is a bit Flash isn't he

I've had Archie 50 envy for a few years now, and I'd checked the Australian printings on the GCD and Ausreprints, but neither of them had #14, which turns out to be...

Whenever I see Betty pictured I'm always reminded of the Starchie spoof in EC's Mad comic:

But Blondie is hotter than either Betty or Veronica in this story!

Wouldn't have thought too many young fellows had five shillings to spend on comics in 1956. Perhaps that's why these are rare.

Well let's put five shillings in 1956 in perspective by present day standards. An Australian shilling contained 2.825 grams of silver in 1956. There were 14.125 grams or 0.4541 troy ounces of silver in five shillings therefore. The price of a troy ounce of silver at this moment is Aus.$21.09. The price in 1956 of a Fabulous King Size Annual  was therefore Aus$9.58 in present day terms which was indeed an unfathomable price to a kid in 1956.

Doing a similar calculation for a Canadian kid in 1956, four Dell 96 page Giants  would have cost Cdn$1.00. Since the silver content of ten Canadian dimes or four Canadian quarters was 0.6 of a troy ounce and the price of a troy ounce of silver right now is Cdn$21.41, the four Dell Giants  in 1956 would have cost a Canadian kid Cdn$12.85 in today's terms.

A Canadian kid would of course have scored 384 pages versus just 340. The Canadian would therefore have paid 32.1% more in silver for only 12.9% more pages. You Aussie fellows therefore had it good (especially if you put away that Fabulous King Size Annual  for which you'd paid 0.4541 of a troy ounce of silver and kept it in VF/NM condition)!

Another day, another book. An eBay cheapy, but quite nice. Reprints of Stan Lee penned stories inside, but I can't find the cover on any US edition. It's an unusual size and aspect ratio, and about half the leaves are glossy paper, the rest are the usual newsprint. That's probably so they could print the 'frameable pinups' on glossy stock.

Here's one of the pinups - quite well printed and on good quality stock. The paper in those leaves is still bright white.

I am sure I have seen this gag on an Archie (or Betty/Veronica/Jughead et al). Your book is not an artistic swipe, more a similar observation - attractive Lifeguard = no one goes swimming.

Anyone else recognise the similarities or, more importantly, the Archie issue? I mean the Hedy book may have been published first.

A change of pace today, with a book that is neither hard to find nor valuable. But I was really pleased to get it as a freebie from the inestimable @Point Five

It contains one of Barks wonderful mid-period Donald Duck 10 pagers. The formula isn't unusual - Gyro Gearloose comes up with an invention (in this case worms that catch fish autonomously) that is partially brilliant and partially crazy, and Donald takes it and misapplies it. Mayhem ensues. :D I really like these stories.

Overwhelmed as I am by your collective response to Barks and Gyro Gearloose, I shall nonetheless struggle on.

Here's an Australian crime comic. Like the other Crime Busters I have, this one seems to have a bespoke Australian cover. This one has a bondage them and I'll eat my hat if that isn't John Wayne handing out a belting on the cover!

CrimeBusters19.thumb.jpg.6dee15358484d51d20af165b2a470ea7.jpg

The stories are all pretty ho-hum. Guy does crime. Guy gets away with it for a while. Guy eventually gets his comeuppance.

Perhaps the most notable feature of this comic is that it has an ad for the first appearance in print of @Point Five - and I'm not making that up!
