I picked this nice looking book up recently, because of the 7th war loan box and because I like Captain Marvel.

I was looking forward to reading it, but it was pretty disappointing compared to others I've read. The only saving grace was a droll story at the end which had a parody of the Hatfield/McCoy feud. Here are the first and last pages.

Fun stuff, Andrew. :)

Ever seen this PCH cover with the Hatfield-McCoy theme? (Not my copy--wish it were.)

Hadn't seen that one Jon. If I had to venture an opinion, it looks a tad more serious a take than Captain Marvel!

This is the next to last book in the most recent Heritage shipment to reach me in Oz. Gotta say it's getting harder to buy from the US all the time. Apart from the exchange rate (1 A$ = 0.68 US$ today) and the steady climb in postage costs from the US to here, now I get hit with a 10% sales tax as well.I'm not sure how many more boxes will be coming my way across the Pacific.

But for now, here's some low-grade L.B. Cole goodness to be getting on with. It looks a bit better in hand and better still in mylar!

This book isn't a great read in terms of plotting and dialogue. But at least the words make up in quantity what they lack in quality.

How's this for an overly wordy page? (BTW - GCD credits the story to Matt Baker, with a ?. I'm not seeing it. Your thoughts?)

The book's not without some nice pictures though. This ceratopsean is nicely rendered in the lead (and best drawn) story in the book. Plenty of verbiage follows though:

Now this Rulah story that ends the book looks a lot more like Baker to me. (GCD agrees, and no ? this time.) And, in a blessing, it has no more than the usual serving of uninspiring dialogue.

Blimey, that is wordy isn't it. I started counting them and gave up on panel four

It is a shame about the overseas postage costs now. Pickings are slim enough as it is without such barriers.

The final WDC&S with the Dell logo. It was Gold Key from then on.

I'm happy with this copy (9.2 CGC). I'm not as fond of these later books as the previous ones. By 1962 Barks was well past his peak and the stories got a bit formulaic and the characterisation less tight. But there were still some OK sight gags, like this one, after Donald has been selling candy floss (or 'fairy floss' for Australians - YMMV) stuck to balloons to make it look there was more of it...

Hi Hep. Great to see you around.

im still pecking away at WDC&S 1-100 but it's unlikely that I'll finish at the current exchange rate. I still need 1, 2, 3, 5, 14 and 18. I'll get the latter two sometime but the early ones are probably not happening.

Thank you! And you may also be interested to know that I've got my "Hepcat Will Still Be Hepcat" thread up and running again in Comics General now:

Interesting though that fifty years ago those really early issues of Walt Disney's Comics and Stories were just about as highly prized by collectors as the earliest Superman and Batman appearances (and much more so of course than the earliest appearances of Spider-Man).

Other than the covers, I'm not usually a big fan of these Star Jungle and Horror books. Content is mostly weak or Fox reprints. Usually subpar art and LOTS of verbage. Thusly, Star, and ACG for the same reasons are where I have the least examples. I have all the Fox other than a couple of Phantom Ladys and Blue Beetles and most of the PCH stuff. Just can't see paying the prices these LB Cole covers are bringing anymore.

Like the Bizarro world emerging from the Underverse, I'm back with the first of a bundle of comics that arrived between bushfire-induced postal stoppages today.

The first issue of Cowgirl Romances was printed in Australia as Cowgirl Comics.

large.458100280_Cowgirl1.jpg.524a61d155f0b20ddfac4bc3e33f4ca8.jpg

It has some nice artwork inside, including by Al Feldstein and Jack Kamen (the GCD has a ? beside both, but I went there to check because I thought I saw the hand of those two when I read through). And it has this nice double-page splash panel.

Awsome book Andy. The US version is hard enough to find and then you post that one.

Hope you are away from all the fires there. They look just so horrible on the news here. Hopefully they are out soon. People on this part of the globe fail to realize that it is summer there and thusly, fires. We get them in Autumn usually in SO CA. We have had some real bad ones in the past couple of years but nothing like what you are experiencing. There is nothing worse. :wishluck:

Thanks for the thoughts guys, but we're OK. We're far enough from likely fire fronts to not be immediately worried, but close enough to have taken some precautions like clearing dry vegetation and having some buckets handy around the yard and for on the roof. We aren't going to face a main fire, but falling embers could present a spot fire threat. Meanwhile I've been doing some volunteer animal work, hauling water and rescuing distressed/injured animals. It has been so hot and dry that the native wildlife is doing it tough even where the fires aren't.

Here is a cover that cannot go unremarked.

That's  quite a fire going just to fry up some bacon. I can see why the cooking is unattended though as things are getting pretty "hot 'n' heavy".

The horses are doing their canoodling bit, but as things heat up for our human  love interests, something "off cover" has startled our hero enough that he, despite the obvious affection displayed by a consenting adult, needs to slap leather.

I wonder whether after this incident "our hero" did a bit of introspective analysis and decided that going "Brokeback Mountain" was the way forward . . .

Cowgirl tried everything to keep his attention though I see. Cooked some bacon, offered a 'fast ride'. Even dropped her drawers and showed him her backside from the looks of the stirring features.

Oh, no comma between outlaw and moon. Sorry.

Carry on.
