I read this graphic novel over the weekend which I came across in my favorite local used bookstore. It's a nice little treatsie on Lovecraft's life along with snippets of his interactions with his contemporaries. Thought someone here might enjoy getting a copy and reading if you have not seen it yet.

I believe we were discussing cherry Tree books back in late January or early February. I ordered a couple, one of them on February 19th.  To make a long story short the Last Space Ship finally arrived today.

Just finished reading this ... twisted is definitely the word that comes to mind!!! And the plot twists as well   I may have mentioned it before but i've found the Brodart Plasti-Kleer covers (pictured) are great for reading your treasured vintage pb's without getting your sweaty paws on them. Still need to use a mylar for fat volumes though as the Brodart's are pretty skinny, but perfect for most hard boiled reading, which tends to be skinnier books. Oh, and Ray's scenes on the front and back covers definitely happen in the book so he must've either read or skimmed it at least

when I saw Jokai's birthday on the sf database I looked at his entry and saw this book, and once the search led to to an image of the BC I was hooked. 102 (nicely padded) pages, a long short story, which is just right as that fits it into my 'illustrated fantasy story in hardcover collection', which had only 2 others in it. The 2008 movie tie-in Benjamin Button is a lushly whimsical production, and the Benet (Devil and Daniel Webster 1937) is a fave for while he ballyhoos Daniel as one of the greats he has to admit that Calhoun was his equal. (Dago FC & BC mine, other images borrowed for convenience, though I store my BB without the curious half dj)

If we ever need to hook you Pat, we'll come armed with vintage bold line drawn images of mythical creatures 🙂 Thanks for the intro to another prolific 19th century author not well known in these and most parts. There's pb editions out there but yours looks like much more fun to read!

Finished reading 'The Tower of Dago', quite the yarn: excitement, depth, and lots of fun in a mildly fantastic fable. This also enabled me to find the 3 interior plates as the thick pages take some turning... Jokai is mostly known for his long historicals (my instinct says REH took inspiration from them) here's one of his most famous in a nicely compact 1898 edition (haven't read it - 262 dense small-type pages) first published in 1852 as 'The Golden Age of Transylvania'.

I also have this volume of 'Tales from Jokai' with a nice long biography by the noted translator R. Nisbet Bain (who also translated from Russian and Norwegian). No date but 1908 gift inscription in front...

So, we’re doing illustrated fantasy novels now?  I’ve got a lot of Baum and other Oz books, these are my two oldest.  Zixi is a first state, Dorothy and the Wizard is a second state from around 1909 or so:

Reading my way through the Harlem Detectives series. A rollicking lot of fun if you know New York in the 60's-70's and even if you don't. I'm trying to do it in these original printings but they're getting awfully tough to find at reasonable prices (but worth it for the wonderful George Ziel covers as well)

Interesting, i've seen a few digest sized mags, mostly pin-up types, slabbed. I looked and that Pocket Guide is not in Overstreet, so not considered comic related in the past. It's funny, there were a few years that the Reform School Girl Digest was listed in Overstreet along with the comic iirc.
