A-level panel page valuations by artist/run - thoughts/additions/changes?

Evening gang,

With all of the recent renewed chatter about the future of the hobby and speculation over what will hold value and what won't, I thought it might be interesting to quickly map out which artists/runs garner what prices these days.

My list below if based on what I thought an A-level panel page by that particular artist on that particular run would sell for based on public sales and whatever private sales I am aware of. Once again, these ranges are for A-level interior panel pages - not covers or splashes or the highly coveted A+ examples or strips. There will be many examples of sales that are higher than the ranges I've stated but these are typically for A+ level examples where frankly all bets are off and emotion takes control.

I would love to hear any thoughts on any additions, changes, etc.

Here it is:

Some thoughts: I would move the Romita Sr spidey panel pages down to the 20-40K range. I would move Neal Adams Avengers and GL one notch lower. I would add Totleben Miracleman to the notch higher than his ST run. I think Steranko should be up a notch. Doubt you can find an A example of Steranko for less than 20K today. I would add Zeck Spidey/Kraven to the notch above his Captain America run. And I would add Perez Infinity Gauntlet in at the same level as Crisis. Finally, the McKean Arkham needs to be up a notch at least. An A page is in the 15K-25K range these days for sure.

I'm sure there's more stuff to change, but that's what jumps out right now. Although some will find this exercise annoying and too investment focused, I do think it's a good idea so people have a general guide.

Best,

Nice job compiling this list. I suspect this will be seen as validation to some, and utter insanity to others. Either way, absolutely frightening to see everything compartmentalized like this. Must be sobering for those getting started (cue Gene reminding us how hard this hobby is for newbies:P) or still looking. I hope there's consolation in the fact that the vast majority of OA out there is available under $1K (provided one is well-versed in comics, including new comics).

Some notes:

I would specify "Mazzucchelli Daredevil" as "Mazzucchelli BORN AGAIN". His non-BA DD is nowhere near BA, value-wise.

I'd add PREACHER to the list at $3-5K.

I'd add SANDMAN, and differentiate between the most popular artists on the run (Kieth, Dringenberg, Bachalo, Jones).

I'd add V FOR VENDETTA to the list at $20-40K. Believe it or not.

I might bump ARKHAM ASYLUM up a notch, but definitely not two. Not if you're making a distinction between "A" and "A+" (which are the ones that give us the outlier results).

Gibbons SUPERMAN ANNUAL 11, I'd drop down to $5-10K.

Kirby should be represented more.

That's off the top of my head, I'll chime in later if anything else comes to me.

Oh yeah, I'd move Adlard WALKING DEAD down to $3-5K. Again, if we're going to make a distinction between "A" and "A+".

Agree with Felix. Supes Annual down a notch. I'm a bit surprised at putting V pages the same as Watchmen. I think they are close but personally would put them at 10-20K. The A+ ones are over 20K, but we're not counting those. I'm also tempted to push the Wrightson ST pages to over 20K. The pages I've seen recently sell are B to B+ pages and they've gone for 12-15K.

Great feedback guys, thanks.

Some thoughts....

Hari:

- I moved Romita Spidey 2up down a notch but there are definitely more than one data-point of A-level stuff going past $40k

- Adams Avengers/GL - I did bump it down to $5-10k however there are data-points in the 10-20 range for A examples. The problem is that there is so little A-level Adams material that trades hands that I think people would be very surprised $-wise once some nice stuff becomes available. I think we got a taste of this when the GL84 pages became available.

Felix:

- I hate to admit that I don't know much about Sandman values, can you shed some light on values for A-level pages for the artist's you mentioned?

- more Kirby, I agree but I was somewhat uncertain on what say his DC stuff would go for A-level pages across the various runs. Or for his post DC Marvel stuff. Would love to hear some thoughts on this.

Here is the amended list with the recommended changes and additions:

And it should be noted there is some A-level Bolland Dredd that is falls well into the top range.

The A+ ones are over 20K, but we're not counting those. I'm also tempted to push the Wrightson ST pages to over 20K. The pages I've seen recently sell are B to B+ pages and they've gone for 12-15K.

Believe me, I'm just as surprised at how far V has come in the last couple of years. But I know of four private sales during that time, all cash, in the $20-40K range. And these are pages that fall in the B+/A range...I wouldn't call any of them A+.

Having said that, I have no problem if V gets slotted at $10-20K.

I would like to stress again, that I would look at these as ranges for A examples only. What's going to inevitably happen is that sellers will point to this thread when trying to justify values for their B/C pages. Hopefully, everyone can judge for themselves the difference between A and B.

And that's another point...while collectors like Gene wouldn't sully their collections with B/C examples and would rather have Artist's Editions if they can't have A examples ( :baiting:) , there are still plenty of interesting pages that would be looked at superficially as "B/C" because they don't have obvious marketable elements (costumes, action, etc.). The beauty of B examples is that they won't cost nearly as much as A, you have more to choose from, and you'll have more opportunities to buy. A collection of well-chosen B pages can be more interesting than a single A page. Just something else to consider.

A+, certainly. But for A panel pages, I think Mike has it right.

Pretty interesting list. I don't really know every single market listed here, but on the ones I know, this seems pretty accurate. Whether everyone could agree on what an A level piece is is another question. I know what I think is an A level page, but would others see it as a B or still others see it as an A+. Just a minor quibble. Good list.

I'd put Kieth at $10-20K and Bachalo and Jones at $5-10K. Dringenberg straddles the $5-10K and $10-20K strata, he could really go in either one right now, pending more data points. Along those lines, same with PREACHER...A pages have gone for $5-10K, but my hunch is that most will be in $3-5K range, so went with that.

There are a half dozen real great examples that are above that range, if those are the A+ then that's probably right.

I'd probably put "A" Miller DD pages just above that range too.

Funny you would list Bolland Judge Dredd and not Bolland Wonder Woman. There are definitely WW covers that shatter the $20K barrier.

Sure, but his list is for interior panel pages only, not covers or splashes.

Damn, you're too quick. I realized my mistake and went back to delete my comment but someone already responded.
