Griff's Don Winslow Journal by Saum02

89 posts in this topic

Picked up a few more Reader DWOTn Books last night on Ebay. Funny thing is someone was actually bidding against me in those auctions.

"they got half the lot the seller had and I got half". Unlike Timely collectors and X-men Collectors there simply are not a lot of DWotN collectors out there.

Till yesterday I haven't lost a bid on E-Bay. Wonder what that will mean for the overall collectability of the book? a whoping 2 people collecting them ! :)

anyway here are the pics

accidently posted this as a separate journal but it belongs here so forgive me if you read the other one

So if you've been following this Journal, you know I decided at the beginning of the year to start collecting Don Winslow of the Navy books

as aggressively as my budget will allow. So far I picked up 10 CGC'ed books "half of which are pedigreed". That's a pretty solid start, and I

know where I can pick up another 15 - 20 books as my wallet will allow.

I decided this morning to take a look at the registry to see how many of each book were available.... Imagine my surprise when I saw

how FEW books are out there to be acquired.

here is a break down of the books

so complete there are only 194 TOTAL CGC'ed DWOTN books out there

As you can see there simple is not a lot of CGC'ed DWOTN books to be had. With a few issues having ZERO copied graded

and many others having only 1-2 copies. I set my minimum grade goal at 6.0 "for budget reasons" so E-bay junk copies wont do.

So Fighting a limited budget, and due to the lack of the books out there I don't see ever finishing this collection in an acceptable grade

"Barring a new collection coming to market"

Now don't get me wrong, I'm not planning on giving up the long term goal of finishing the set in grade. I just simply don't see it as

possible with the number of books out there

You can finish runs like this. I had the same issue with both Jumbo and Jungle. You just have to look at some sites that have raw book and find ones good enough to grade. It took a couple of years doing this for my Fiction House runs but I managed to get it done. I learned to settle for a bit less on some issues.

Thanks mano I appreciate the encouragement "and if you wanna PM a list of sites so I know I'm checking everywhere I would be greatly appreciative !"

Your top on my list of peeps to pick up from. and I really want that #4. its the best of the Nazi covers to me. just have to save up pennies for a bit since its a little spendy "but worth it !"

I'm not giving up on this, just reminding myself it wont be a 2 month project. Heck I don't even know how long it will take to find the Merwil copies. they seem rare as heck !

I am hoping the odd auction book I picked up is the merwil #2 but wont know till it arrives "still not here /sigh"

If anyone can identify this book I would be grateful ! :)

Finally got around to scanning the issue 47 Raw so I could ask ask boardies to give it a grade.

You can see back cover and internal page quality here "pink pages possible?"

I'd love to here any thoughts on weather its worth submitting or not

That's a great cover Griff!

Of course I would send it in, but that's me... especially if it's the first appearance of the villianess.

Looking at your PGM thread, my first impression was a 7.0, but I could also see a 7.5 possibly. You might get a designation of Pink pages but I'm not too sure on that one.

Thanks HoC, still gotta get some cash to cheetah first. Think ive finally decided to sell off my reader collection of X-men. "nearly a full run of books from issue 5-500"

Hoping that funds some more purchases otherwise it is gonna be a long wait before I can start picking up high grade books.

I'm still deciding if I want to invest in a CGC membership or just use a 3rd party vendor to send books in with. that's a toughy for me.

I'm thinking about asking Joey to press the 47 and sending it in after. Also I have to figure out how to ***REQUEST*** they add a note to the label denoting its Singapore Sal's first appearance. "of the 2 issue 47's graded neither notes that issue 47 is Singapore Sal's first appearance". I don't know why they didn't list it on the label, but if I'm going to submit it I would really like it to note its her first appearance.

I have no idea how many different DON WINSLOW Comix Cards there

are in this series from Fawcett but I'll check it out as I go through my

books. Don't know how many every collected these but I'm almost sure

someone did.
