What makes an A–Level PREACHER page?
2 2

413 posts in this topic

With the exception of the consensus on SOK pages, this thread appears to be kind of all over the place in terms of what people are looking for, which I'd say is a testament to just how much there was to like about that series.

Excellent point. So let's amend the PREACHER entry in the "$3K-$5K" column to "SoK pages". Outside of SoK, there's obviously so much else that fans like, that there should be plenty to go around.

Spinoff topic from the valuation bracket thread, which has A–Level Preacher pages in the $3k to $5k bracket:

What constitutes a top Preacher page?

Vintage? Humor? Jesse? The Saint? Key moments? Blood? Cussing? The Word? Does it have to be from "the run"? (I don't know the difference, having read it in TPB format)

I know what my favorite pages are, but I get the feeling they are very different from the ones which command the most money.

Not saying this is a "$3K-$5K" page (it probably isn't), but it does check off a lot of boxes for me:

I generally prefer pen/ink over color, but will admit that I miss the red in Jesse's eyes in the last panel as he uses "The Word" on Cassidy...a perfect exclamation mark for the page in the comic.

A $499 starting bid for this page may as well be "no reserve":

A solid example, and a title page, to boot. Doesn't quite make "A" for me, but will still be interesting to see where a quality page like this ends up.

I thought $790 was actually pretty healthy for this page. Thoughts?

With all of the chatter around here i was expecting it to go over $1,000. As with the entire OA market, I think the gap between "A" and "non-A" grows a bit each day.

This page overall isn't a "great" page, but it is a title page, which i think holds an appeal of its own. (shrug)

lol Before the chatter, I would have thought $600-700. After the chatter, I had no idea. Title pages are :cloud9: and this one is funny but I just didn't see it "shocking" us.

Very good price for the buyer. If I hadn't sat it out for a fellow boardie, it would have gone over $1000. Best buy for PREACHER I've seen in a while.

As I said before, it's not quite A, but it still has a lot going for it. For the collector looking for a nice representative example, this would do nicely. Title pages get a bump, and perhaps even more so in this case, as all the covers are locked up. I suspect anyone who sat on the sidelines will come to regret it. Congrats to the winner!

Soooooo anyone here win?

Hey Nexus, I'm not 100% postive and don't have the book in front of me(at work), but I think Jesse doesn't use the Word until the next page, when he tells Cass to let go. So now you could always sell me that fine example of a dramatic Preacher scene;)

I thought that page was a decent deal at $790.

When I personally buy a Preacher page, I'm buying the Ennis word balloons more than anything. It needs to have funny writing and/or a funny scene. That one cracked me up. Wish I weren't saving for something else.

The absence of the humor component is a big part of the reason I didn't ever buy a SoK page. (oh yeah, that and the fact that you never see them)

This thread makes me want an A level Preacher page.

An A level Preacher page is like porn - you know it when you see it. I think we all love the series for different reasons so one person's A level page might not be anothers. I hang all my art up these days, so anything that's not "wall worthy" gets a pass unfortunately, so that may minimize the spoon and spoon jokes I could allow. ;)

You HAD an A level page that went back and forth between you and another collector over the course of 10 days, if I recall correctly :baiting:

lol

I'd call that one a B+ personally. I was never really satisfied with it as my big example. Of course now it looks pretty damn good since I have nothing from the series.

Thanks!!!

Splashy page of Jesse with a shovel from issue 59 or so (going to dig up the SoK). Inset panel of Jesse smoking said something like 'How the hell did I end up here?'

Funny, I totally forgot I sold it to Jon and got it right back. It now resides with a collector who isn't on CAF. I believe he got my Sandman 12 page as well.

Yeah the page was splashy for sure, but honestly didn't have a lot going on. It certainly had sentimental value though for all the traveling around it did!!

I'm really out of the business of trying to pry pieces out of people's collections for the most part. Down that road leads higher prices and overpaying but would definitely pay well for what would be an A or A+ Preacher page to me.

The dialogue is what makes is the book A-Level for me. It's beats any A-List Hollywood flick!

You're preaching ;) to the converted

The dialogue is the main thing for me and these always crack me up and don't feature any of the central characters!
