I 100% agree while this may not have been an instand flip book in the current market I think we would all agree that having this 5.0 (or any AF 15 for that matter)  in ones collection is a pretty solid book to own over the long haul. However, the point of my posts were not which book was better looking vs grade but more on the initial over all negativity about that particular book. I mean honestley if we are now at the point where some of us look at any AF15 with chipping as  " less than"  more than half of the ones I have seen over the past 3 decades are in trouble  as are many of the ones I have seen that are owned by collectors here on these very boards my self included. ( Maybe we should have a new color on CGC for books with no chipping? lol )

I think the issue, and what started this conversation, is that a fellow boardie made a comment saying that a CGC 5.0 copy for 32k was a “good deal” when in reality that price is close to the current market for a marvel chipped copy in grade. Hardly a good deal... more like fmv. A 5.0 with no chipping recently went for +40k, so in comparison it definitely does look like a good deal.

Calling this book ugly may be taking things a little too far, but to each their own. For me, a book with tape, rusted staples, or brittle pages would be less desirable than a marvel chipped copy. I do know though, for most collectors, that marvel chipping does detract from the overall presentation of the book which shows in the varying price points for books in the same grade.

I think sometimes it is important to focus on why you are collecting in the first place.  For most of the boardies, myself included, it is the intrinsic reward of finally having a grail.  Whether its  a baked copy, stains, tape, writing, creases that break color, spine splits, tears, or chipping, you're eventually going to have to accept some detractors in the lower graded realm.  Here is my place holder in the club.

Awesome, thanks.  So that was last November.  I bought my 5.0 in July 2017 -- maybe not the *best* timing, but I really liked the lack of chipping on my copy so I went for it.

If CGC properly deducted Marvel Chipping from the grade, this wouldn't be an issue. They decided not to do that for whatever reason, so we have a stratified market for chipped vs. non-chipped books that is only reflected in sales prices, and not the grade.

Newbies to the hobby may not know this, and so what we have here is a failure for CGC to communicate the lesser desirability of chipped books. Dumb idea for them not to deduct for MC.

I"m a bit confused ... is it literally true that CGC ignores Marvel chipping when grading?

Ignores is a strong word. MC is considered a "production defect" that doesn't get discounted as harshly as a post-production defect (i.e., some kid tearing off a small corner of an AF 15 to throw his gum away).

So here is an example of a lower grade without MC but lots of other things to distract. I guess it's like someone said prior, for some creases, tears & stains are acceptable in a lower grade but not MC, while others would look past a bit of MC if the book was solidly attached at both staples, centered well and had bright colors. To each his own!

We hear you.

Actually I think this copy was properly graded. Nice eye appeal with MC = 4.0. Nice book for sure.

Mine is a CGC SS 1.8 copy -- hasn't been raw since 2012 (?)

I'm also kind of blown away at the rate at which this book has increased in value in the 10+ years since I bought my copy -- 10x its original purchasing price! Can you imagine how many stocks and bonds out there have shown that kind of consistent growth? Craziness.

Anyhow, my wife and I used to joke about eventually selling off my collection when we're approaching retirement and using the money as a down payment towards a small condo in Florida for snowbirding (20 years from now). Given the increases, that joking may be less unrealistic after all!

Great job on the compilation of the above data. Man, it brings back memories on all the books and the years have flown by on the Boards..I love all the books. <3

This is what I posted 10+ years ago...

I won the 3.5. My max bid was $4057...  lol and wasn't willing to pay a cent more.  :sumo:

It will be interesting to see how that price holds up over time, but since I have no plans to ever sell it... (shrug)

I started collecting in this hobby for the past 8 years and I’m astonished at how much the collection is now worth! I’d rather invest it in the comics I bought rather than buying another property. Comics went up a lot more 😱
