Lower/mid-grade X-Men 1s didn't bounce in 2009 at all though (or any other year, really), let alone approach the nuttiness of the Hulk 1 and AF 15 sales in their respective years. Just normal price appreciation.

My recollection was that they did climb after that but I could be wrong.

As I mentioned earlier in the thread, a similar pattern also happened when AF #15 CGC 9.4 broke $200K in a Clink auction circa 2008 or so. Before that sale, there just hadn't been a lot of high grade AF #15s that moved. GPA has one listed at $90K in 2003.

After the Clink copy sold, all lower copies started to appreciate rapidly after that. I'm sure AF #15 rose sharply after that as I had just sold a copy a few months before.

My point is that what happened in Hulk #1 is not an isolated incident in my experience (and I've stated this more than once). It's usually either a higher grade copy that sells that hasn't sold in a while that lights a fire in lower grades or sometimes it's a slow buildup in lower grades that causes the top grades to push up (as is happening in Bronze keys like Hulk #181 where the top in 9.8 had come down from it's peak and now has started to climb back up due to upward pressure from lower grades).

@october

Andy, I was wrong.

Now when I think about it, I think the X-men #1 market was established but the surprise was the CGC 9.4 price because one hadn't been on the market in a while.

But that price point was more or less established when the book came up for auction.

Is it possible to retract a bid?

I retracted a bid the other day. The seller had two ASM300s for sale and I bid on the wrong one. If you catch it in time you can retract within an hour after bidding, at least that is what ebay said.

Hey Gator

Superman2006 here (in case my name doesn't show up properly)

e.g.

someone bids $243K at 1:22 a.m., which takes the high bid shown to say $225K (or whatever just beats out the underbidder to that point),

someone bids $231K at 1:48 a.m. which takes the high bid shown to say $236K (or whatever the next bid increment is above $231K),

someone bids $241K at 11 a.m. which takes the high bid shown to say $241K (or $243K??)

I think something like that would explain it, right?

Hey Vintage - Yeah, I saw a post from Arch that noted such issues on the right side of the screen and sent him a note after posting my message above. My usual username came through fine with the move to the new boards, but got messed up sometime in the past week or two from would I could tell. Oh well, Arch should be able to fix it...

I see that a White Paged JIM #83 just sold for $62.5K on CLink. Is that about the going rate, or do you think the recent increase in AF #15 prices helped it out?

Impossible to tell in this market what is going rate.

Might be in the ball park.

Love to visit old books. Here is the AF15 from the Maine Summerhouse collection. I believe Brent at Quasar Comics found this collection in the early to mid 2000s. Note how nice & clean the grays are. Initially graded a 7.0 with white pages. Sold for 20k. Then pressed up to an 8.0. I remember when it sold for 60k then I lost sight of it. Not my book but I found it in the archives. Always loved this book. Just a killer copy in the raw state. :insane:
