Ranking the Most Desirable Golden Age Superhero Comics

Hey guys,

I thought it would be fun to rank our favorite Golden Age Superhero books by degree of desirability. FMV can certainly play a role in the selections, but it's really up to personal preference. I've found that my list has changed frequently over the years --a trend that will likely continue-- but off the top of my head, my Top-10 would look something like this:

1. Action Comics #1

2. Detective Comics #27

3. Batman #1

4. Superman #1

5. Captain America Comics #1

6. Marvel Comics #1

7. Detective Comics #31

8. Action Comics #7

9. More Fun Comics #52

10. Whiz Comics #2 (#1)

How about you?

For personal desirability

Cap 1

Marvel 1

All American 16

Detective 1

Batman 1

Detective 27

More Fun 52

All Star 8

Flash 1

Planet 1

If money is completely off the table these are my faves. Other than Action 1 and Superman 1 being the keys they are they don't do a thing for me. If I had all the money in the world there are still others not on my list I'd go after before those two unless the price was too good to pass up.

While major keys are undeniably the universally most desirable super-hero books, my personal preference runs to classic covers. Even if I had unlimited funds to pour into collecting GA, I think I'd be more excited about chasing down covers I love in 6.0 and above, than the major keys. My top 10 would probably change frequently, and we always desire most that which we don't already have. I sold off my hero books, but among my favorites were Cap 74 and Human Torch 12.

Tec 31 is one of the few big dollar books that's also a classic cover, and I'd probably look one of those harder than a 27. As for the major keys, the one I think I'd most want is an Oct. copy of Marvel Comics #1. I don't even love the cover that much, but it's pulpy look and the memories of being a teenage Marvel Zombie and having this book as an unattainable grail make it my favorite big key.

[font:Times New Roman]My list will likely be a bit different from most because the primary focus is on art. For the most part, while compiling this list I ignored FMV, character popularity and dominance of the two remaining major superhero publishers (Marvel or DC) in the context of GA. Instead, I gauged subjective desirability by kewlness and what the books have to offer the collector (great art, covers and/or interiors).

1. Captain America #1 (orig. of Cap; first Red Skull)

2. Superman #1 (first four Action stories reprinted; nice cover)

3. Pep #34 (just because it has a kewler cover than #22 and still has an Archie story)

4. Marvel #1 (orig. Human Torch, Sub-mariner & Angel)

5. Daredevil #1 (DBH) (classic Wood/Biro Hitler cover; book length epic)

6. Silver Streak #7 (classic Jack Cole cover and 38 pages of Cole art; 2nd Daredevil appearance, 1st red/blue costume)

7. Wonderworld #3 (Lou Fine cover; first appearance of The Flame by Fine)*

8. Red Raven #1 (1st and only appearance of Red Raven; 1st S&K book length project for Timely)

9. Bat-Man #1 (first appearance of Cat Woman & Joker; nice cover)

10. Marvel Mystery #? (hey, just about any issue, that's what makes this title a marvelous mystery)

Honorable mentions where I couldn't figure out a way to squeeze any more onto this list without a top 12 make-over: Human Torch #5 & Detective #18.

...Also, if I add Phantom Lady #17 to the mix that'll make it a Baker's dozen.

Note: I've underlined of the books I already own.

*Alternate for Wonderworld #3 in my lexicon of desirable books is Hit Comics #5 (both are Fine books in more ways than one).[/font]

I take it you're more of a Batman fan than a Superman fan?

Guiltr as charged! 11-20 would have another few Bat-books (and, to be fair, Superman #14)

I too am a bigger fan of Batman than Superman, but I still put Action #1 ahead of Tec #27. The historical significance of the book trumps the 1st app. of my favorite hero.

With that said, I also put Batman #1 ahead of Superman #1.
