How much of a premium are we talking for newsstand issues v/s direct editions?

Funny.

I still only see the same four or five guys talking about these now as I did when I wrote that nearly six years ago.  (shrug)

I didn't really care about them six years ago, so maybe it's up to 5 or 6 guys now.

Are the rest of you guys the ones outbidding me?:sumo:

How many people on this thread have stopped buying direct editions? I have almost completely stopped buying them, treating them as fake comics for the most part. The ones I have were either bought before I knew the difference or were given to me instead of the newsstand copies I ordered, and it was too much of a hassle to send them back.

If there are others who feel the same way, I wonder if there will be downward pressure on directs, in addition to a premium on newsstand comics? For me, the issue with newsstands is partly about rarity but also what they represent: a different time and a different way of buying comics. I would prefer them even if direct edition were the rare ones, not the other way around.

speaking for myself, I’ve recently realized that a dealer can not reduce a price enough to make me want to buy a direct edition, unless it is so far below profitability that I could turn it into a profit without half-trying. For instance, a 9.8 slabbed copy of Daredevil 168. Going price around $200 (for the sake of argument) I’d be a buyer at $45 or so, but that’s it.

I'm selling a friend's collection on consignment …. tons of CGC 9.8 ASM's …. and lets just say quite a few more than 4 or 5 are asking to have newsstands separated out. Unfortunately, there aren't a lot of them(newsstand) at that gradepoint …. and we're talking 9.8's, hundreds of them, from # 150 up. GOD BLESS....

:foryou: and i would guess for every one of us, that's a thousand silent collectors out there (except for RMA, that would be at least 5,000  )

I respect newsstand editions and understand their appeal. Especially when factoring the process, both in distribution and the end result of pulping unsold copies.

However, I’m partial to the aesthetic look of direct editions, when it comes to Copper Age (1980s and 90s) books. I have passed on several issues I’ve needed over the years because of what I see as a distracting UPC code.

I hear you.  I originally started noticing newsstands about 10 years ago when I tried to make sure ALL my issues were direct sales copies.  Then I got hooked on trying to find all the rest of the newsstand copies for completeness.   It was a nutty pursuit but I finally found them all.  I can't quantify with any precision the ratio of newsstand to direct sales, but I can say that some DC newsstand issues between 2003 and 2011 were really hard to find.

That’s somewhat ironic because when they first put barcodes on (1975?) I was similarly annoyed and truly considered not collecting anymore. It was sacrosanct to destroy the integrity of the cover art.

As a rule I never bought comics from a comic shop

Sounds odd now,but most of the comic shops I went to as a young kid only sold back issues.I had to take my bike to three or four different corner stores sometimes to find the different comics I wanted,or ones that weren't already beat up bad.Comic shops were for weekend box digging.

the rule of thumb should be 15X FMV of the regular edition, at least until I have no more newsies left. except for thor 339. the direct version of that is very rare, and should be at least $150 raw.

shill over.

Comics got them in early-mid 1976. At least MAD got a couple of extra years without them... somehow. hm

times change; except for collections i bought (back issues) and a few outliers, i bought all of my 1st tier tomato box books from 1967 to 1979, and not a single one from a "comic shop." all of them came from drug stores or "mom and pop's". i did have to go to various "head shops" in the 70's to get my underground comix (but that's a different discussion altogether . . . )

Yes,my first back issue/comic shop was also a pornography shop in the back separated by bead curtains lol .My bike trips were in the eighties, but I guess Ottawa was still a bigger town/small city. So,I'm partial to barcodes for nostalgia-and our prices were different,so I may pay a small premium,if it's Canadian newsstand.
