Great Spider-Man villain - but no real impact on the Marvel universe and not really a crossover villain (although maybe they changed this in copper/modern?). Also, I am not even sure he is the best Spidey villain (Doc Ock and Venom come to mind).

I've read a lot of spiderman...he is the #1 spidey villain and thus belongs in top 5 marvel villains imo. Only speaking on the original green goblin up to 122...I don't even consider after that.  For me its

Doom, Magneto, Thanos, Green Goblin, Galactus.

I'd go af15 and x-MEN 1. 1 and 2 by far , marvels 2 most popular properties. No xmen 1 then no giant size. Wolverine might not have been as big of thing. Probably wouldn't be a mcu if not for those 2. Marvel would of followed up blade with hulk daredevil, certainly wouldn't have been inspired by ff and ghost rider. Spiderman xmen trilogy got that jealousy greed flowing. Ff1 came 1st but oh well. Marvel would of had a super team eventually. Avg 4 is not important. Cap would of came back at some point. Hulk would be 3 then ff would be 4. Top 4 is enough for me.

Avengers 4 over ASM 1 is pretty tough to argue.

Avengers 4 is one of my absolute favorites, and it has a cherished place in my collection.  But at least in terms of value, it wouldn't crack the top 12 much less the top 10.  In addition to ASM 1, off the top of my head I know that DD 1, FF 4, ST 110, and TTA 35 are all significantly more expensive.  I paid more for my 9.0 copies of ST 110 and TTA 35 than I paid for my 9.4 WP copy of Avengers 4.

Avengers 4 is in a similar weight class to FF 52 and TOS 52, both of which are slightly more expensive in 9.4 even though I think the nod for "historical significance" obviously goes to Cap's return.  Upper end of the second-tier Marvel Silver Age keys.

Just for the heck of it I decided to do a quick ranking of books in my collection based purely on what I paid for them.  This is an imperfect ranking for a few obvious reasons, including different purchase dates and different grades.  But it does shed some light.  Here are the top 30 by purchase price:

  1. X-Men 1 CGC 9.0
  2. Amazing Fantasy 15 CGC 5.0
  3. Fantastic Four 1 CGC 7.0
  4. Incredible Hulk 1 CGC 6.5
  5. Tales of Suspense 39 CGC 8.5
  6. Fantastic Four 5 CGC 9.0
  7. Daredevil 1 CGC 9.4
  8. Amazing Spider-Man 1 CGC 7.0
  9. Journey Into Mystery (1952) 83 CGC 7.0
  10. Fantastic Four 12 CGC 9.4
  11. Fantastic Four 52 CGC 9.4
  12. Tales to Astonish 35 CGC 9.0
  13. Strange Tales (1951) 110 CGC 9.0
  14. Tales of Suspense 52 CGC 9.4
  15. Avengers 4 CGC 9.4
  16. Amazing Spider-Man 15 CGC 9.4
  17. Daredevil 7 CGC 9.4
  18. Fantastic Four 2 CGC 9.0
  19. X-Men 4 CGC 9.4
  20. Amazing Spider-Man 3 CGC 9.0
  21. Amazing Spider-Man 6 CGC 9.4
  22. Avengers 1 CGC 8.0
  23. Fantastic Four 13 CGC 9.4
  24. Fantastic Four 4 CGC 8.0
  25. Tales of Suspense 57 CGC 9.4
  26. Journey Into Mystery 87 CGC 9.4
  27. X-Men 2 CGC 9.4
  28. Amazing Spider-Man 4 CGC 9.0
  29. Fantastic Four 45 CGC 9.4
  30. Journey Into Mystery 85 CGC 9.0

A couple of important notes:

  • If you had any doubt about the strength of AF 15, FF 1, or Hulk 1, it should be erased by how high my mid-grade copies of these books fall on this list.
  • Similarly, ASM 1, Avengers 1 and JIM 1 are hurt by their grades and would get a bump (a significant bump for Avengers 1) if we normalized the list to factor out grade differences.
  • I am still looking for ASM 2, ASM 11, Hulk 2, and TTA 27 -- any of which would easily crack this list.  If I ever decide to buy a Sgt. Fury 1, that would make it on the list as well.

Thank you!

There is always somebody else out there whose collection will make you humble ... a fair number of the books in my collection are the undercopies somebody else was letting go.  The ultra high-grade copies of all the mega-keys have to be owned by somebody, and I've made peace with the fact that it won't be me.  And that's not even considering what the big GA collectors can boast.

But one of the reasons I love this board so much is to see what other collectors are up to, and in some cases follow along as they set goals and announce their progress.  The thrill of the hunt is what makes this so much fun!

No list is complete without Strange Tales #89!!!  :sumo:

Interesting.  It sure is difficult to do an apples-to-apples comparison on values when the census has only 3 blue label copies at 9.0, and none higher -- with no GPA data above 8.5.

(That's just the value side of the coin -- on the "historical significance" side, as awesome as ST #89 is, its influence on what came later is pretty limited.  The MCU has vaulted TTA #13 far ahead of it by that measure.)

Awesome list but somebody is going to have to explain to me why ST #115 would be on it.  If you asked me to list my Top 100 comics, ST #115 wouldn't even come to mind.

(Genuinely curious BTW.)

I admit to a Ditko Dr. Strange bias. His origin here is the 2nd most significant Issue. Plus, it’s a very early (first 10) Spidey appearance. Plus, Strange Tales is awesome. You’re lucky I didn’t add 102 and 104!

Personally I would list 89, 101, 107, 110, 114, 135, and 167 as my top Strange Tales issues.  I have a soft spot for 123 (Thor) as well as 130 (mop tops!) but that's purely sentimental. (thumbsu

107? I get that it’s a battle cover, but it’s never really stood out as a classic to me. You’re right, tho; I should have included 135!
