Reasonable price for NM 98?

579 posts in this topic

I sold a NM raw today at a show to another dealer for $150. So there's that.

Now there's a valid baseline. :sumo:

Sounds more like a bad dealer to me. The other guy of course.

May I ask why?

Jim

I guess if you are the kind of buyer who wants to have it in your hands to to see the quality that's one thing. Plenty of NM to be had for under $150 online. The other thing I assumed was when he said he was a dealer I was thinking he was buying it for resale, which may not be true. I don't see any resale value there at $150. I guess if it's a 9.8 and gets slabbed, of course then.

See whereas me, I'd buy every copy on the planet for $150 that I could see in hand first and I'm pretty sure I'm not a bad dealer. Even if you left it raw, NM #98's sell at shows for $200-$225, in the highest grades, so a quick $50 if you have a customer looking for one doesn't make you a bad dealer.

Jim

No, it pays for lunch . . .

But in all honesty, here is approximate FMV...

9.0 $150

9.2 $175

9.4 $200

9.6 $250

9.8 $400

9.0's to 9.4's there really isn't that big a disparity in price, hell the last 9.2 sold for $199, and the last 9.4 sold for $175, within 9 days of each other.

And my high grade 98 would have been a 9.6, maybe a 9.8 on a good day, but I'm very happy to take my $150 and go home. Don't be greedy, .

As of right now, IMHO, the CGC 9.8 at $400 is overpriced (not saying the approximate is incorrect). I was able to find one for $320 just a few months ago.

It's not like NM 98 is hard to find.

According to GPA, only 2 of the 208 copies sold in 2014 were within that price level ($300 BINS). The days of sub $400 9.8s appear to be over. Overpriced or not, it's inconsequential to market realities.

$450-$475 seems to be a comfortable 9.8 price at the moment.

Edit: Should have looked at the post date. Anyways, I guess there's your NM98 9.8 market update.

Prices have definitely spiked since that Deadpool movie footage was "leaked".

I think we will be seeing them going for $500-$550 by the Fall.

All I know is that I owned nine copies at one point and sold eight of them in the past five years never charging more than $60 a piece.

I never believed a book with a print run so high would go for so much.

I think most of them I sold for $30 or $40. These were solid 9.4s or better. All raw.

I have my personal copy left, but that's it.

I don't think this book is even close to its ceiling. Every collector I know either owns a copy of this book or is actively looking for a copy of it. I could definitely see 9.8s going for $1000+ 3-4 years down the road especially if deadpool gets going again on the big screen. Obviously the print run means nothing if the character is popular enough. Look at IH 181.

How high was it?

From what I've seen estimates are around 250k. That's actually not as high as I thought.

Fact of the matter is, even with the massive amounts of copies graded on the census, only about 28% have come back 9.8+. Considering how popular deadpool is, and if they really are sorting out a proper movie for him, it is easy to see why the book continues to creep up in value. The comparisons to hulk 181 really are quite appropriate.
