In honor of it being almost 3 months after Black History Month ended :/ (as you can see I'm really on the ball here) I will be putting up for sale tonight (with photos) the original art for Lobo #2, published by Dell in the mid-60s. Lobo has historical significance because it was the first comic series devoted to a black main character. It was a commercial flop as many retail shops refused to sell the comic, but is an interesting piece of history nonetheless. The original art will also come with a reader copy of the issue. By my standards I paid a lot for this well more than 10 years ago, so I need to figure out what it is worth to me/the market now.

Pics are a few pages in.

I always have high hopes and then I get home at 9, put the kids to bed, make dinner, do laundry and before you know it it is 1:00 a.m. and I am frigging exhausted. I am really going to try tonight.

You need to tell the kids to make dinner and do the laundry because you have more important things to do. :D

and then my laptop died and we went on vacation, so I wasn't in a position to do this...

anyway, so here goes...

We have 32 page of award winner Tony Talarico art on this classic historical series, plus the cover. page 32 is a half page that was apparently pasted together in various pieces. I think a couple of my photos did not get uploaded properly to photobucket, but I assure you, I have the entire art and cover for the comic.

Circa early 1966.

I am looking for $2,900 for this group (which includes the art for 32 pages and the cover), which includes insured priority mail shipping within the U.S.A., so well under $90 a page (and the cover, which is on a larger sheet, should really be counted as more than just a "page") + the comic!

If this is something that interests you, please feel free to PM me and I can send you the couple of photos of pages that seem to have gotten lost between my hard drive, photobucket and here.. As I can just walk it over to their offices locally, I am likely going to consign it to the August Heritage auction if I can't do something here.

My thought process is that this is a ton of pages from an almost 50 year old book. At a modest $80 a page (which seems to be on the very low end for vintage stuff like this, even from a Dell book and these pages are mostly action scenes with the main character or the villian), that's $2560 for the pages, and the cover ought to be worth several hundred.

Of course, I'm looking at this also from the historical perspective. This isn't just a generic Dell book from 1966, it is the second (and last issue) of the 1st comic featuring a black main character -- Dell had the foresight to give this a shot in 1965. It wasn't until like 6 years later until Luke Cage got his own book. Did DC even have any black heroes in 1965/66? Even in their war books? (I know Marvel had at least two).

Anyway, obviously my price isn't set in stone. It's just a guestimate as I have never seen the art for #1 sold (have no idea if it even still exists). There is no #3.
