I bought my first Tales from the Crypt in 2009, a raw VF+ copy of 42 I found on eBay (surprisingly it was accurately graded - came back 8.5). I decided I would put together the entire TFTC set in 8.0 or above, starting with CP 15. After collecting Silver Age Marvels, I was looking for a challenge - books that don’t just come along every week in auctions or dealer sites. I loved scaring myself with the HBO show in the 90s, so it seemed like the right title to go after. I paced myself, expanded into other EC titles (still missing about 20 books in the other crime/ horror/ sci-fi titles), and found my way on to these boards along the way. I’ve made friends here, and when I’m excited about a recent purchase or want to discuss these great comics, this is where I come. Thanks everyone for the support and encouragement along the way! Almost like the cover artist drew them himself as part of the cover instead of stats. I know that is not the case because most of them like the Old Witch for instance, is usually done by Ghastly. originalisbest Posted February 21, 2018 Share Posted February 21, 2018 (edited) They did change over time -- eventually (not all at once) moving from Feldstein-drawn stats for all three, to a Craig Vault-Keeper, an Ingels Old Witch, and a Davis Crypt-Keeper. I note TFTC #34 has the new CK and OW, but not VK yet (probably because Craig was being slow/a perfectionist!) But even though the portraits did change, they were all stats, with one exception: (Confirmed as Russ Cochran auctioned the original cover recently) -- Tales from the Crypt #35 has a hand-drawn Crypt-Keeper roundrel, a rather menacing one; Jack drew it in (presumably) because he didn't have a stat handy, or maybe the one he had ready to go got scratched or crumpled (I'm theorizing.) Being Davis, he was able to quickly draw the replacement as part of the original art. Stat-shmat!
