I know there's a lot of nostalgia toward newsprint and the four color process of the pre-good paper era, but... yeah, they just ruined that artwork in reproduction.

True dat! Gene's work should never have been allowed to be colored. His B/W work is astounding

That's generally true for artists with a heavily-shaded style, atmosphere that works well for horror and urban / crime settings, as with Colan on Tomb of Dracula and Daredevil, and Graham Ingels at EC, or Alex Toth's chiaroscuro approach.

I agree with you point, but in this particular instance I think White-Out is more of the culprit than the pulp paper.
