wow.    Nice find!   I know how hard it is to find a shop with a lot of back issue in the UK (and for that matter, most places in Europe)

Impressive!  I never found one in the wild - I had to resort to getting my #94 from eBay, coincidentally from a UK seller.  Although the funny thing is that I found a non-DCU Flash 94 2nd print at a con this weekend.  I was half tempted to buy it.

It also makes me think about other DCUs that I've had to resort to buying from non-US eBay vendors and never seen in the US brick and mortar wild:  Tec 685, AOS 539, Robin CS, WW #97, Superboy Annual #1, GL #77, MOS #59, Superboy #29.

This is my second Flash #94 in the wild, the first was in the US. It does make you wonder what foreign distribution of these looked like, and whether that might explain the scarcity of some of these.

I read over half the pages in the thread.  Was anyone ever able to confirm that Steel #23 exists?

I hope this isn't against the rules, but here are some links to some DCUs and DCUs in lots currently available on the 'bay:

I'd say if you're not pimping your own sales, and its not happening everyday, its not too big of a deal.

Also for those inclined, if you look through mycomicshop listings, they typically have 5-20 CGC 9.8 DCU's for sale at any given time, though they're not usually labeled as such.

Oops, I did it again.  Couldn't let the month end without unearthing yet another previously unknown DCU.  ^^

Seriously, I feel cursed...  All I really want is known DCUs like Robin 4, Superman 77 3rd print, Superman 100, etc. but for some reason, I keep having more success finding unknowns like this one, Superman 97, Flash 100 newsstand and Robin 12?  (shrug)

The hunt continues... doh!

I agree with you on the Adv of SM 523.   All the other major titles have a DCU variant for that month, but Adv of SM 523 in DCU format alludes us.    Congrats to LikeEmScanned for finding the Adv of SM 521 DCU variant.

And for everyone out there who's looking, I will gladly pay $200 if someone would find and sell to me a copy of a DC Universe variant of Adventures of Superman 521.     Crazy... I know.... but that's how hard these things are to find, in my opinion.

Also off topic just a bit I found this Midnight Sons barcode sticker variant just on a whim.  I've seen the DC books with these but not any Marvel books.  Anyone else come across any and have any info on these?

Take a look at this link.   There's been cases where the printer needed to cover up an error on a bar code (so they used the sticker) or they needed to send additional copies to the newsstand (so they covered direct sales labels with the bar code to get the comic books to the newsstands).   A lot of photos are missing from this thread, but the text clues you in.

I wanted to run a theory by the group.  We know that most of the DCUs came from 20-packs, 10-packs, 2-packs, Best of '94/'95 and Superman/Batman/Robin/Green Lantern/Flash Collector Sets.  Recently, I have been asking some eBay sellers if they were the original owners and if so, do they remember how they got the book.  I asked one seller about the "secret origin" of the Detective #690 DCU that he had for sale.  Verbatim: " Any idea where this Detective Comics #690 came from?"  This was included in 12 comic straight run/lot of Detective from #681-#692.  All the other comics had the direct sales barcode.

His response was "I can tell you I subscribed to Detective Comics, so that's where they came from."

Does anyone think that by late 1995, DC was sometimes sending DC Universe copies out to direct mail subscribers?  Maybe this could account for some low print run/hard-to-find issues?

I don't know that this is impossible, but it would seem to be unlikely barring some evidence like a DCU still sealed in a direct mail envelope/shrinkwrap. I'd think it more likely that this guy missed a book somewhere along the way and just so happened to get a DCU copy to fill the gap in his run. I know that my memory is no longer perfect as to where I got each of my run-filler ASMs, so it would be hard for me to assume that this guy's memory was perfect on this score.
