Stan Lee recently met up with the cast of FOX’s The Gifted at San Diego Comic-Con to snap a photo with them. The legendary Marvel figurehead will have his customary cameo appearance in the upcoming series, based on the X-Men universe. Executive produced by Bryan Singer, Matt Nix, and four others, The Gifted follows the story of Reed and Caitlin Strucker (Stephen Moyer, Amy Acker), who discover that their kids Lauren and Andy (Natalie Alyn Lind, Percy Hynes White) have mutant superpowers and have to enlist the help of other mutants to escape the pursuit of the government.

Set to premiere on Oct. 2, The Gifted’s pilot episode was directed by Singer and could possibly feature that Lee cameo. The official Comic-Con trailer teased a world in which the X-Men have apparently disappeared and Moyer’s character will have to find a way to put aside his job in order to protect his family.

The Gifted Showrunner Reveals The X-Men Comic That Inspired TV Series

In addition to clarifying that the disappearance of the X-Men will be a central mystery in the show's plot, Nix revealed that show takes its thematic inspiration from the District X comic book series.

The District X series, set in a fictional New York City neighborhood in primarily populated by mutants called Mutant Town, followed mutant and FBI agent Lucas Bishop who was assigned to investigate the rising crime rates in the neighborhood.

"I looked a lot at some of the more obscure runs that didn't deal with the central superhero mythology. I loved District X, which was just about a district in New York. It's where the mutants are. You're following around Bishop, who's a cop," Nix said.

He also explained that while District X was a police procedural, The Gifted isn't directly based on the comic book series and is instead about the mutants and their interaction with society.

"The show is not a procedural at all, but it was seeing mutants in society, dealing with crime, drugs, their relationships to each other," Nix said. “We didn’t take any characters from it. It was one of my favorites.”

Looks interesting enough so far to give it a watch.

Long time fan of the X-Men, so I understand the majority of the characters' names, abilities, and whatnot, but I can't figure out what the kid is supposed to do. Is he TK like his sister or Magnetic like Polaris or something else?

'The Gifted' Casts Garret Dillahunt As X-Men Villain

Quote

Fox has cast Garret Dillahunt in the recurring role of Roderick Campbell, a mutant researcher working for Sentinel Services. Deadline describes the characters as, “Professorial, intense and intimidating, Dr. Campbell has a morally dubious mission yet to be revealed.”

Fans of classic X-Men comics may have some idea of what that “dubious mission” is. Roderick “Rory” Campbell is a Marvel Comics character who was once an ally to the X-Men spinoff team Excalibur but later is turned into the Famine, a horseman of Apocalypse.

However, Rory’s best-known villain persona is Ahab. Hailing from the dystopian timeline seen in “Days of Future Past,” Ahab commands the Hounds, mutants with tracking abilities who are brainwashed and forced to hunt down other mutants. The most famous of these Hounds is Rachel Summers, the daughter of Cyclops and Phoenix, who escapes her timeline and comes to the present day, joining first the X-Men and later Excalibur.
