X-Men Annual #14 - Proof of Gambit's 1st published appearance within

True. I like the 266 cover better, in spite of the Dee Snyder inspired, purple thong combo he's sporting.

I belong to the "I cant believe Ill live to see the day where people will favor an Andy Kubert cover over an Arthur Adams cover or a Michael Golden cover" camp

I don't know if this has been the case at many other conventions, but Annual 14 is a common wall book at NYCC this year.

Of course, after all it IS Gambit's 1st app.

Yes, but I don't know if it's indicative of the acceptance of that, or just that dealers are looking to make a buck off of those that see it that way. $25 seemed to be a common asking price, although I didn't examine conditions. I did see one UXM 266 with a $200 asking price.

And it will continue to go down that path. The hobby still sees X-Men Annual #14 as a limited early appearance, and UXM #266 as the 1st full appearance. It probably comes down to the limited use of Gambit in X-Men Annual #14 to fill space that throws collectors off.

Buy them both, and have the full story told. Problem solved!

-Annual 14. Hey look... There's Gambit, and on several pages! BAM!! First appearance.

- Xmen 266. Hey look.. It's Gambit again, but only after we saw him several times in Annual 14.

BAM!! Second appearance.

I guess I'm just too literal for this whole comic book business.

At this point, I think everyone that's visiting this thread acknowledges what was printed first. But in my mind, it's:

Annual 14. Hey look... There's Gambit, a character who's not particularly integral to the story being published.

Xmen 266. Hey look.. It's Gambit again, in a story that was pretty clearly written to be an introduction to the character if the publishing schedule of one annual per week during the summer didn't necessitate publishing the annual before the intro that serves as a better introduction.

Again, I have one copy of 266, which isn't leaving my collection any time soon. I have several copies of the annual, two of which are coming back from CGC soon. It's in my financial best interest for people to value the annual more, but IMO 266 is still the more desirable of the two, despite the fact that the annual was published first, and I would imagine has the lower print run.

... And significantly lower 9.8s on the census

There are now two more.

I used to assume the count in the census was a good indicator of scarcity, or not.

All it does prove are those books sellers and collectors felt strong enough towards it was worth their expense to submit the books. Let some high sales occur, and watch how fast that census grows as others want to take advantage.

Good examples of this are G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #21 and Harbinger #1. And even Wolverine #35 (1991) that we were never going to see a 9.8 in our lifetime due to a printing error now has six (6) examples, two of which are signed.

last year I passed on 3 nice copies of #14 in a 3 for $10 box some guy selling mostly toys had. i really have no idea what i was thinking other than "I already have 7 copies" and my son was screaming at me about how he wanted to move on and I had bought enough comics.

I was going through some of my books yesterday and came across this one. I still can't believe this one isn't labeled "1st full appearance of Gambit". CGC label states "Gambit, cameo (predates Uncanny X-Men #266)". It looks like the pics in this thread are busted. I took a few of the innards of my X-Men Annual #14 to count up the Gambit appearances...I count 13 panel appearances, he's named as "Gambit" by Storm in his first appearance panel and appears all throughout the story. The inconsistency in our hobby if both fun and frustrating at the same time...

Hulk #180 predated Hulk #181, but the market still considers Hulk #181 Wolverine's First Appearance. The same applies in this situation. :sorry:

No, the market considers Hulk 181 to be the more desirable and valuable book.  However, everyone knows that Hulk 180 is Wolverine's first appearance, albeit in a pretty big final panel cameo (with associated storyline referring to and providing backstory on Wolverine earlier in the book).  Which is why, for example, CGC calls 180 "first appearance of Wolverine in cameo on last page."  You may not believe this, but back in the day Hulk 180 was the more valuable book.

The reason being this is an out of continuity cameo.  A quirk in release schedules of the two books. UXM 266 was the intended first appearance.
