Hard to find Adventures of Superman Mall 443 variants
2 2

These sunsaperson_without_enough_empathyes are hard to find. I've got three (Rhode Island, Montclair and Washington Park). The other four are Spring Hill, North Shore Square, Westgate and Clearview.

Here's images of all seven variants (this is the only place I know where you can see all seven at once). I'd love to hear it if you have been able to find these or any others.

Very cool. Was it just the cover, or are there differences in the story too?

Those little mall symbols in the UPC box on the cover are the only thing that makes them different than the regular copy. Everything else is the same as a regular copy. So if you count the direct sales copy, the newsstand copy, and the 7 mall variations, you would have 9 different versions of Adv of Supeman 443. For completeness, here is a photo of the direct and newsstand issues, side by side.

Never heard of these before; pretty cool.

Were these 7 malls all in the same area or spread out over the US?

(sorry for my mall ignorance)

Yes, the malls were spread out all over the US. Here's where I think those malls were/are located:

Montclair Plaza - Montclair CA (near Los Angeles)

Westgate Mall - I think near Boston, but I'm not sure

Clearview Mall - Butler PA (near Pittsburgh)

North Shore Square Mall - Slidell La

Rhode Island Mall - Providence RI

Spring Hill Mall - Dundee IL

Washington Park Mall -- Bartlesville OK

I've asked a few shops around these areas if they have these variants in hand, and I've had no luck. I think they are extremely hard to find. I'm guessing that only a few hundred or more were made for each mall.

I've wondered if perhaps they were either give-aways or sold in the Waldenbook book stores. To make it worthwhile for you to look, I would gladly pay someone $100 for each copy that I'm missing from my collection. You are not likely to find them on ebay nor any on-line store (I've been looking there for years). Largest chance for success would be to find them in a local comic shop or used book store (or in your sister's closet!)

Westgate Mall is Brockton, MA. My childhood mall which I'm amazed is still operating.

Here's a pic of Spider-Man at the mall in the early 1980s. Perhaps the owner at the time was a comic fan.

Glad you resurrected this topic since the StlComics forum went down some time ago. I know Jerome has several and we had pics of all except one or two in the IG. I saw two or three within weeks of each other years ago and not a one since. Very hard to find variants...

Thanks Metarog. I just wanted get them all shown in one spot and re-iterate my desire to get them all in my collection (I'm willing to entertain any reasonable offer if someone is willing to part with one). I believe Jerome has Washington Park, Spring Hill and North Shore Square. I have Washington Park, Rhode Island, and Montclair Plaza. So Jerome and I have 5 of 7. I've never been able to find an owner of Clearview and Westgate, but I know they are out there. They are so darn rare that I would not be surprised if some other mall variants existed but have never surfaced.
