This month's issue of Alter Ego has an interview with Gerry Conway, who scripted a few issues of Kamandi, and he had some interesting comments about how successful the series actually was.

 

He said that Kamandi wasn't necessarily selling any better than Kirby's Fourth World stuff, but Carmine Infantino was basically a terrible editor in chief. According to Conway, Infantino didn't make decisions based on how well books were actually selling, but rather on how well he thought they should be selling.

 

Well, Conway certainly should know what a terrible editor in chief looks like, having been one at Marvel (for about 6 weeks!) :flamed:

 

I do think the basic business metrics were broken at DC during these years, whether it was because of affidavit fraud, as Neal Adams believes, or because of the demise of the old boys network at National Periodical Publications and its affiliated companies, as Irwin Donnenfeld suggests. But it was probably more complicated than simply what Infantino "thought (the books) should be selling."
