A couple of comments about grading from a baseball card guy

In your opinion, how much more difficult is it to detect alterations (if there were to be any) once a comic is inside of a holder?

 

In some cases: impossible. Anything going on inside the book, of course, cannot be detected. This includes, but is not limited to: some staple reinforcement, torn page repair, leaf forming, some spine reinforcement. Sometimes feel is needed to diferentiate between a trick of light/inks and a slight line that MAY be a crease. If you cannot feel the area you cannot make a determination. Etc etc. About what one would expect.
