According to the site, Atlanta's Brian Tyree Henry will provide the voice of Miles Morales' detective father, Jefferson Davis, while Mahershala Ali (Moonlight, Luke Cage) will play Spidey's uncle, Aaron Davis. We had previously heard that Ice-Cube was up for the role of Jefferson, but obviously that didn't pan out.

Bob Persichetti is set to helm the picture, with Peter Ramsey (Rise of the Guardians) on board to co-direct. It's been confirmed that this will be a standalone project, and won't be set in the same continuity as the main MCU films.

Written by Phil Lord and executive produced by Lord and Chris Miller, the animated Spider-Man movie is due to open December 21, 2018.

Chris Miller Hypes Animated ‘Spider-Man’ Movie’s Visuals

Spider-Man-Miles-Morales-Movie-e14984335

Quote

Chris Miller, co-writer of the animated Spider-Man movie starring the Miles Morales iteration of the character, is incredibly impressed with what the visuals are looking like as they come together.

Miller, who helped develop the two Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs movies alongside frequent collaborator Phil Lord, are no strangers to Sony Pictures Animation, and they’re among the key architects of the LEGO Movie universe in development at Warner Brothers. But he’s claiming that the new Spider-Man project that they’re working on is not only unlike anything they’ve ever done, it’s also completely different from other animated films.

Animated Miles Morales Spider-Man Film’s Trailer May Arrive This Weekend

Quote

News has been quiet for a long while on the animated Spider-Man film, but it seems that more is about to be revealed. The film’s producers, Phil Lord and Chris Miller, freed from their duties on the Han Solo film, are teasing big news about Miles Morales’ big screen debut for this weekend.

JBLtFDt.png

“In 2 Days,” Miller tweeted via a Spider-Man logo. Not just any logo though; the tweet’s image is the red and black of Miles Morales, voiced by Dope and The Get Down actor Shameik Moore. Liev Schreiber will voice the movie’s yet-to-be-announced villain. The animated film is likely to be a stand-alone, not tying into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (although Miles’s uncle appeared in Spider-Man Homecoming, as played by Donald Glover), the upcoming Sony Spider-verse films, or the upcoming Playstation game, which looks to include Miles as a major character.

As for the two day timeframe, this likely refers to Sony’s movie panel at Comic Con Experience in Brazil. Hopefully we will see a new trailer, learn a bit more about the supporting cast, and finally see what this film looks like.

“It’s not going to feel like every other Spider-Man movie you’ve seen,” Miller said last summer. “It will stand on its own as a unique film-going experience.”

:whee:

Animated Spider-Man Movie Titled Revealed As 'ANIMATED SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE'

Quote

Sony Pictures Animation's upcoming animated Spider-Man movie has webbed up a title. According to the Canadian provincial government's website — which holds the classifications for movie trailers, commercials and PSAs — the project, previously referred to as simply "Animated Spider-Man," will be titled Animated Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse. Sony Pictures has yet to officially reveal the title for the previously Untitled Animated Spider-Man film.

The official Sony Pictures Twitter account teased the first look at the film will debut at Brazil Comic-Con on December 9, which runs at 1:06 minutes and should confirm the animated movie's official title.

FORBES.COM: Miles Morales Will Make Animated 'Spider-Man' An Event

download.jpg?width=960

If this Bob Persichetti/Peter Ramsey-directed and Phil Lord/Chris Miller-produced animated adventure works, then Sony could be in a position to essentially offer a new Spider-Man movie every year, with a live-action MCU offering and then an animated adventure in alternating years. And that's not even counting the various spin-offs like Venom and Black and Silver. And the biggest trump card concerns the man behind the mask, not Peter Parker but Miles Morales.

As you may know, and as I noted when the Morales announcement was made back in January, Miles Morales was created by writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Sara Pichelli as a would-be replacement for Peter Parker in the Ultimate Spider-Man comic book series. The “Ultimate” line was created in 2000 as a way for Marvel to reinvent their flagship characters for modern times and modern readers without ditching the ongoing continuity of the “regular” books. That version of Peter Parker was killed off in 2011 and Miles, a young man who had recently suffered a similar “bitten by an enhanced spider” accident, eventually became Spider-Man to honor the fallen hero.

The teaser offered this morning is a surreal and highly stylized offering that looks like a cross between an Alex Ross image and a psychedelic cover image. Most importantly, this means that 2018 will offer another comic book superhero movie featuring a hero of color, during the same year as Marvel’s Black Panther and Jason Moma's Aquaman. A Miles Morales animated Spider-Man movie means that there is a darn good reason, artistically and culturally, for Sony to be making an animated Spider-Man movie in the first place.

Yes, it'll be neat seeing a stylized Spider-Man cartoon over the Christmas season in 2018. And it'll be even cooler to see folks who look like Morales thrill to a superhero who looks like them under the mask. For said demographics, Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, starring Shameik Moore (as Miles Morales), Mahershala Ali and Liev Schreiber will be an event movie when it opens Dec. 14, 2018.

There will be a Peter Parker. Just not Tom Holland.

Surprising New SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE Details Revealed

Quote

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse writers and producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller appeared at the Comic-Con Experience 2017 in Sao Paulo, Brazil this weekend and revealed some new details about the spectacular looking animated movie. For starters, they've confirmed there won't be any connections between the Marvel Cinematic Universe and this release, so forget about a Tom Holland cameo!

The Peter Parker that shows up in Into the Spider-Verse is going to be a middle-aged man and not someone who is just a few years older than Miles Morales. The original Spider-Man will serve as a mentor to the youngster and the movie will revolve around him passing the baton to his counterpart.

Phil Lord and Chris Miller Reveal New Details For 'Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse'

Quote

Now the film's producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller have opened up about Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse during an interview at CCXP17 in Brazil.

"We wanted to make a story about Miles. And when they came to us, it seemed like an amazing opportunity to tell a different kind of Spider-Man story," Lord said. "The thing that's exciting to us is the idea that anyone can be behind the mask. It seemed like a really great opportunity to subvert your expectations of what you thought a Spider-Man movie could be."

"And on top of that being able to do an animation was a really exciting opportunity," added Miller, "because no one's really ever made a superhero movie that has the look and feel of a comic book so it's a really cool, double opportunity."

"When you take a big property like Spider-Man you know you can either play it safe or you can take it as a chance to do something really different," Lord said. "And that's the thing that we always like to do is use these as an opportunity to try new things"

The producers were coy about how deep their film would explore the titular Spider-Verse, but they teased many other characters will be involved in Miles' adventure.

"I will say this is Miles movie," Miller said. "He's the protagonist of the movie, but it's a large universe out there and there's a lot of opportunities, and the movie enjoys that."

"It's a good tease, Christopher," Lord joked with his friend. "I mean, it's a teaser we're showing. We can't just, like, pull off the whole veil right now."

Like The Killing Joke, I feel like this would have been better as a direct to video or VOD-only release.

Why?

It will have a much larger audience as a theatrical release.

Because of the greater potential of financial loss and perception of failure, given the derivative nature of the character and the lack of awareness among the general movie going audience.

Huh?

Lord and Miller have an impeccable track record so far, general movie-going audiences obviously know who Spider-Man is and it looks like a cool take.

General audiences know who Peter Parker is.

A second, derivative character also being called "Spider-man" may or may not resonate or be relevant beyond the hardcore comic book set.

Hence why it probably would have been better to test the waters in a smaller venue (VOD) first.

Yeah...because general audiences knew who the Guardians of the Galaxy and Dr. Strange were too, before Disney opted to spend $165 million+ each on those films.

And...after three actors and six movies I think general audiences will be just fine.

Besides -- this likely _is_ testing the waters...for a live-action Miles Morales film and/or trilogy.

I figured you would bring up that tried and true guardians of the galaxy example.

The difference is, there wasn't already a series of movies with a team called "Guardians of the Galaxy" out there.  Similarly , there wasn't already another "Dr. Strange" simultaneously casting spells at the multiplexes.

I'm not saying general audiences are too stupid to know the difference , I'm saying the addition of this derivative character to the big screen may very well be too much of a good thing, and can push general audiences into not caring enough to bother showing up en masse to see this cartoon. We are already getting a Venom movie and the real Spider-man in the Avengers next year.  We just got Homecoming this year, and the real Spider-man in Civil War last year.

Enough is enough already.  This cartoon should be on pay per view.
