IRON FIST on Netflix

Just finished the show.  I rate it above Cage and Jessica Jones, and below DD Seasons 1 and 2. At 16% this might be the dumbest rotten tomato percentage of all time. It wasn't amazing, but it was good.

The biggest problem with the show in my opinion was the casting of Danny Rand. I think they handicapped themselves by casting someone as a master of martial arts who had no martial arts background, and didn't even appear to have an athletic background so he could at least fake his way through. A lot of the fight scenes with him were painful to watch, and the fact that he doesn't have a mask made it tough for them to throw in a double often enough. He didn't need to be Asian, but he should have been a martial artist.

Spoiler

And maybe the most ridiculous part of the show, how the hell did Colleen NOT know the hand was bad. Somehow in the entire organization she appears to be the only one in the dark as to who they are. It was just dumb.

Also wha the hell was that last scene with Davos convincing Joy Danny now needs to be killed? Why would she ever buy that? Gao behind them just smiling? Hopefully they get into her character more eventually.

I finally finished watching Luke Cage this weekend. I  had seen 2 episodes and I gave up, but the rest were better, and I enjoyed it.

I'm on episode 4 of Iron Fist and I've enjoyed this one from the start. He's a little dorky sounding in the beginning,  but the cast is good and I find myself looking forward to the rest, it's certainly not worse than the other series. I think it's right on par with them.

Yea, that's just an awful Hollywood decision.  Whoever thought that just anyone can play a martial arts master hasn't the first clue why Bruce Lee was so loved, or why people do enjoy Jackie Chan movies, or why Ray Park was by far the coolest villain in the Star Wars films in his portrayal of Darth Maul.  Having a high degree of martial arts skill is scintillating to watch on screen, and if you don't have it and your main guy is supposed to be a martial arts master...hoooo, boy.

While I found Finn Jones, likable enough as Danny, you're both correct in the fact that an actor with a martial arts background would have certainly improved the show.  As Vulture pointed out, The Actor Who Could Have Been Iron Fist, Marvel/Netflix probably missed the boat by not casting Lewis Tan as Iron Fist, instead relegating him to the Drunken Master version of Zhou Cheng in episode 8.  I think he was the highlight of that episode and completely stole the show with his scenes.

I'm not up to episode 8 yet, but I suppose I don't know enough about Martial arts to recognize the difference. I just find the lead slightly goofy and slightly charming which makes him someone some women would like to watch.  I'm just wondering if he was picked, so he'd have a broader appeal ?

I enjoyed the Jackie Chan/Bruce Norris type  movies, but I suppose I never got into the actual details of the skills. I just find the fight scenes I've seen here so far a little confusing, so I'm sure I'm missing something or maybe that is what other people are referring to ? Every scene seems like the jumble in the elevator.

I really like Colleen Wing the best so far. I know I would have LOVED Chuck Norris in the role if he were the right age.

I'm looking forward to episode 8, now:)

If you can't find another Chuck Norris, or Jason Statham, then don't make Iron Fist yet.  Wait.  Much like finding a large, physically and mentally strong female actor is difficult with Wonder Woman, finding a martial arts guy who can act is an incredibly difficult task.

Agreed.

I'm on episode 6 now (the one directed by RZA) and it's getting a bit better.

But I can't shake the feeling that Finn Jones is woefully miscast.

And that - as superheroes go - Iron Fist is going to be (by far) the weak link in the Defenders.

Anyone here believe he could take Elektra in a fight, let alone Daredevil?

I was getting the Peter Parker average guy vibe were he was just an average guy with an average build who gets thrown into this crazy set of circumstances adventure. I think they were just trying to appeal to The Big Bang Theory crowd.

I agree and I think this same thing will be a problem with audiences when Amy Schumer plays Barbie. People have their expectations set as to what certain characters should look like. An example is I don't expect a  Peter Dinklage type person to play the Incredible Hulk. This same thought process seems to be affecting the critics not liking Finn Jones as Iron Fist. I get the vibe the critics wanted someone more muscular and in shape. If someone had a Stephen Amell type body playing Iron Fist than I am sure the Rotten Tomatoes rating would have been higher.

So this goes to show there is now a bias in that people want to see their heroes in great shape, and are so used to it,than when they see a Finn Jones type body play a superhero it throws them off.

I guess the days of an average guy like Michael Keaton playing a superhero are over.

I didn't know she was playing Barbie, but I know Amy Schumer so it seems clear that defying the expectations you're referring to would have been the very first reason she agreed to the role and the most likely reason they cast her to begin with.

Let us hope that those defying expectations turns out good at the box office. I know the Mattel stockholders have some concern.

This guy does seem to be tall, though.  I stood next to Chuck Norris at a casino once, a long time ago, trying my best not to stare, but he was barely my height and I was wearing flats. I'm only 5'6". My friend was playing craps next to him, so we were there for a while.  I don't collect autographs, and I didn't want to disturb him, but I wish I had a camera with me. This was before we all had cell phones with cameras;)

Tell the primal portions of your female brain that yes, he's 5' 9", but Chackie Chan is 5' 8", Statham is 5' 9", Bruce Lee was 5' 7", Ray Park is 5' 9", and Jet Li is 5' 6, so the idea that Finn Jones is tougher because he's 6 feet is purely a myth.  :gossip:

Stallone is 5"7" and Tom Cruise is 5 "8" that is the magic of Hollywood.

Did Chuck Norris do good at the casino? I don't know how you resisted not talking to him. I would have tried to shake his hand. I am a big Chuck Norris fan.

Yeah - Stallone, Cruise and Mel Gibson are all 5'7".

The actors exaggerate their height, and the fans underestimate it in response.  Stallone is 5' 9", Cruise 5' 8", Gibson 5' 10".

There's a guy who has a dedicated site that objectively figures it out I use whenever it's in question:  http://www.celebheights.com/.  I have heard people claim Stallone as 5' 7", but it's relatively easy to see he's taller than that with all the times he's been photographed next to Arnold Schwarzenegger.
