New Mutants Reportedly Filming This Summer

Quote

A report by My Entertainment World confirms that filming is indeed set to take place Stateside. New Mutants is scheduled to begin filming in Massachusetts on June 4th. Considering the director was scouting in Boston for filming locations just two weeks ago, and multiple X-Men films slated for filming in Canada, it’s no surprise that this recent hub of film production activity has been locked down for filming.

With less than two months to go until filming is reportedly set to commence, however, there are a lot of details still up in the air. There’s still no cast firmly in place. Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) and Anya Taylor-Joy (Split) have been rumored to be tied to the project, but nothing has been confirmed as of yet. It’s expected that James McAvoy will resume his role as Professor X in New Mutants as well as the next installment of the X-Men series with X-Men: Supernova, but no official announcements have been made.

Of course, with 20th Century Fox reportedly aiming to release New Mutants in 2018, and the filming location and time secured, those final story and casting pieces to the puzzle should fall into place quickly.

Looks like 2018 will be the year of Fox-Marvel.

Deadpool 2, X-Men: Dark Phoenix, New Mutants Get Release Dates

Quote

20th Century Fox has given official release dates to three upcoming X-Men movies.

New Mutants will open on April 13, 2018. Deadpool 2 will follow on June 1, 2018. The next core X-Men movie, now confirmed to be X-Men: Dark Phoenix, will open on Nov. 2, 2018.

New Mutants is being co-written and directed by Josh Boone. The film is inspired by the very first X-Men spinoff series, The New Mutants, which followed a new class of teenage mutants attending Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters. In keeping with the tone and tradition of the comic book series, the New Mutants movie is intended to be the X-Men movies franchise's entry into the Young Adult film genre. The film is expected to begin shooting in early May, with production taking place in Montreal and Boston.

Deadpool 2 is the sequel to 2016's underdog, R-rated hit. Ryan Reynolds will return as Wade Wilson, the merc with a mouth. He'll be working with new director David Leitch. While supporting cast members from the first Deadpool movie are expected to return, Deadpool 2 will also give Wade some new playmates. Atlanta breakout Zazie Beetz will play Domino, a mutant mercenary with the gift of good luck thanks her mutant powers. Josh Brolin will play Cable, the time-travelling mutant soldier/mercenary who gets stuck playing the straight man to Deadpool's zaniness.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix will be an adaptation of "The Dark Phoenix Saga," generally regarded as the greatest X-Men story ever told. X-Men: The Last Stand previously adapted the story, but fans were generally not satisfied with the results. The X-Men movies' time travel shenanigans have provided Fox with a rare second chance to do the story justice.

It's probably going to be a while before we get to see Anya Taylor-Joy and Maisie Williams in character as Magik and Wolfsbane, but thanks to Phil Noto we have some idea of how the young actresses might look when they do finally debut in Josh Boone's New Mutants movie.

Noto has depicted Taylor-Joy and Williams as Illyana Rasputin and Rahne Sinclair here, as the duo will obviously look a whole different in their mutated forms. It'll be interesting to see if Colossus' little sis goes full-on demonic Darkchylde in the film, and if we get to see Rahne completely "wolf-out."

X-Men: New Mutants Reportedly Looking To Cast Its Next Principal Actor

Check out this casting call from Project Casting

Central Casting is now looking for men who are 6’9″ to 7’4″ who are very thin and athletic. You must be able to chase kids down a hall. Must be okay with prosthetics and make up. Talents will work as a paid principal actor. Filming will be in Boston, Massachusetts from July 13th through July 21st.

Speculation about the casting call is that it could be for the villain Demon Bear, who has long been rumored to be the main antagonist of the New Mutants movie. Demon Bear is the central baddie in a famous New Mutants storyline, in which The Bear (a corrupted Apache spirit) has possession of New Mutant team member Danielle Moonstar's parents, and his hunting her down. It takes the combined efforts of the team (in a brutal wilderness survival scenario) to stop the demon, and free Dani's parents.

Rosario Dawson's NEW MUTANTS Role Revealed; Storm Confirmed Not To Appear

Cecilia.png

Quote

Earlier today, we told you that there have been rumblings that Rosario Dawson will make the leap from the Marvel Cinematic Universe to the X-Men Universe for New Mutants and The Hollywood Reporter has shed some light on who the Iron Fist star will be playing in the Josh Boone helmed release.

That is Dr. Cecilia Reyes, a doctor and former member of the X-Men. She is able to generate a force field that is tied to her life force and the trade reveals that she will serve as a mentor for the young group of heroes in New Mutants. It's also confirmed that James McAvoy's Professor X and Alexandra Shipp's Storm are not in the -script, hence why the former won't be taking on that leadership role here.

NEW MUTANTS Details Revealed; Will Be A Horror Movie With No Superhero Costumes

Magik.png

Quote

New Mutants has been in the works for a while now and Entertainment Weekly has today revealed the first details about what's to come in the X-Men spinoff. According to their sources, the PG-13 release will delve into how teenage mutants are most dangerous to themselves and others during their teenage years, while a brief synopsis revealed by one of the site's sources says: "Held in a secret facility against their will, five new mutants have to battle the dangers of their powers, as well as the sins of their past. They aren’t out to save the world — they’re just trying to save themselves."

That sounds like a lot of YA novels and movies and is familiar ground for supehero fans. However, here's where things get really interesting; director Josh Boone tells the site that he plans on taking New Mutants to some very unique places. "We are making a full-fledged horror movie set within the X-Men universe. There are no costumes. There are no super-villains. We’re trying to do something very, very different." The no costumes thing is likely to bother some, but that's an exciting approach.

Before you get too worried about New Mutants straying too far from the source material, Boone was quick to point out that the work of Chris Claremont and Bill Sienkiewicz has heavily inspired his take on the property for what he describes as, "a darker and more surreal and impressionistic X-Men series than we’d ever seen before. It felt like Stephen King meets John Hughes. We made a comic book with what our vision of the series would be. We love that Fox wants to make all these different X-Men spinoffs as drastically different as they can."

Stranger Things star Charlie Heaton is in talks to join the cast of New Mutants.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Heaton - who played social pariah Jonathan Byers on Netflix's Stranger Things - is in negotiations to join the X-Men spinoff film as Sam Guthrie, the mutant also known as Cannonball.

Cannonball has the mutant ability to create a jet-like explosion that propels him through the air. His ability also comes with a forcefield that makes him nearly invulnerable while he's in motion. Or, as the Kentucky native Sam himself would say, "he's nigh invulnerable when he's blastin'."

Heaton will be joining The Witch and Split star Anya Taylor-Joy and Game of Thrones' Maisie Williams as part of the team of young mutants.

Taylor-Joy is set to play Illyana Rasputin, the mutant known as Magik. Magik has teleportation powers and is a master of myst

NEW MUTANTS Confirms 13 REASONS WHY Actor Henry Zaga As Sunspot; Rumored Contenders For Mirage Surface

Following today's news that Stranger Things actor Charlie Heaton has been vast as Cannonball in Josh Boone's X-Men spinoff, New Mutants, The Tracking Board has confirmed an earlier rumor that Henry Zaga (Teen Wolf, 13 Reasons Why) will play hotheaded Brazilian hero Roberto da Costa, AKA Sunspot.

Another version of Sunspot was actually played by Adan Canto in X-Men: Days of Future Past, but hopefully this take on the character will stick closer to the comic book incarnation.

In addition, Omega Underground has heard that relative newcomers Blu Hunt (Originals) and True O'Brien (Days of Our Lives) are in the running to play Danni Moonstar, AKA Mirage, who is the main focus of The Demon Bear Saga upon which the movie is reportedly based.

The story adds that Moonstar was the final key role to be filled and her role is being described as possibly the most important in the -script, which is said to be a loose adaptation of the classic Demon Bear Saga.

Hunt, who is part Native American, joins an ensemble cast that recently added Anya Taylor-Joy (Split) as Magik, Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) as Wolfsbane, Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things) as Cannonball, and Henry Zaga (13 Reasons Why) as Sunspot. New Mutants Rumor: Warlock Will Be Motion-Capture

Warlock-of-Marvels-X-Men.jpg?auto=format

Quote

A brand-new casting call for New Mutants indicates the movie may be seeking a motion-capture actor to tackle the role of Warlock. Fox has had a shaky time adapting their various Marvel properties to the big screen, but the last couple of years have seen things turn around. Both last year’s Deadpool and this year’s Logan have been massive hits, with critics and audiences. That success has emboldened Fox, with the studio putting forward plans for their most ambitious film slate to date.

Next year will not only see Deadpool 2 hit theaters, but the new X-Men franchise will continue when it tackles Dark Phoenix. Before either of those films hits, however, Josh Boone’s teen horror film New Mutants will enter theaters with a diverse cast of young heroes facing a terrifying threat. The project is all set to start shooting next month in Boston, which has meant the cast finally solidifying. So far, Maisie Williams and Anya Taylor-Joy have joined as Wolfsbane and Magic, respectively. Stranger Things star Charlie Heaton has also coming aboard as Cannonball, with 13 Reasons Why actor Henry Zaga joining as Sunspot.

A new casting report discovered by Omega Underground hints at another classic character potentially joining New Mutants, with the description seeming to point towards Warlock.

SKINNY MAN – Male, 20’s – 60’s; Caucasian, must be over 6’9″, extremely tall and skinny. We are looking for someone who is very good with movement. This is a featured principal role with no dialogue.

if he's gotta wear makeup and prosthetics anyways, his facial expressions won't matter much.  He's very thin and athletic and can certainly chase/run.  its one week of shooting, maybe another week for prep, but in the middle of summer when basketball is pretty light anyways.  It takes place in a major east coast city (and he's from the east coast), so airports, hotels, restaurants and other conveniences won't be lacking.  And obviously it would be great pub for the movie.  As long as they don't expect him to do any official press that would interfere with basketball activities, I don't see a downside for either side.  The only thing I could see is that with Durant may object to being a 'demon bear', although they could probably call it 'dark bear' or something.

Of course, this assumes Durant can believably read some lines after filming.  Or I guess they could dub in someone else's voice (james earl jones?)

NEW MUTANTS Adds I AM LEGEND Actress Alice Braga To Replace Rosario Dawson

alice-braga-dest.jpg

Quote

In a surprising turn of events, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Rosario Dawson has left Josh Boone's upcoming X-Men spin-off New Mutants and will be replaced by Alice Braga. She'll take over the role of Dr. Cecilia Reyes, a character that THR describes as "a medical doctor who has the ability to generate a protective bio-field around herself but also has more going on than she lets on."

Reasons weren't provided for Dawson's departure, but a scheduling conflict with her Marvel Netflix shows may have played a part in her decision making. Braga is best known to audiences for her roles in sci-fi thrillers like I Am Legend, Elysium, and Predators. She currently stars on the USA Network drama Queen of the South.

New Mutants hits theaters April 13, 2018
