War Of The Worlds set for UK television adaptation

Poldark producer Mammoth Screen is developing a major adaptation of The War Of The Worlds to coincide with the expiration of the copyright on the HG Wells novel next year, Broadcast can reveal.

The ITV-owned production company is working with Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell and Doctor Who writer Peter Harness to create a mini-series that will remain faithful to the period and setting of the novel, which was first serialised in 1897.

Mammoth has secured development funding from a UK broadcaster and now has an eye on the US, where the company is hoping to find a co-production partner next year.

Mammoth’s ambition is to go into production on the series in early 2017, after the copyright expires in December 2016, and it will be distributed internationally by ITV Studios Global Entertainment.

It will be the first time War Of The Worlds has been adapted for UK television and Mammoth is keen to capture the essence of the original story, in which the Surrey town of Dorking is invaded by Martians.

My brother and I used to watch the War Of The Worlds tv series that was in syndication in the late 80's. It didn't have much to do with its namesake, if I remember correctly, but it was pretty cool, and lasted for at least a couple of seasons.

If this one sticks to the source material, it should be pretty cool.

That took a long while.

MTV Developing WAR OF THE WORLDS TV Series

MTV is looking to collaborate once again with Teen Wolf creator Jeff Davis for a reboot of the H.G. Wells classic, War of the Worlds.

Davis and writer Andrew Cochran will adapt the ever-popular story portraying the conflict between man and extraterrestrial, according to Hollywood Reporter.

In addition to War of the Worlds, TV audiences can expect to see a heavy amount of reboot shows in the near future. The list of some of the notable reboot shows includes: Dynasty (The CW), Magnum P.I. (ABC), The Lost Boys (CW), Varsity Blues (CMT), The Departed (Amazon), Let the Right One In (TNT), and L.A. Law. The latter of which does not have a networked attached at the moment.

BBC developing a Victorian-era War of the Worlds mini-series

war-of-the-worlds-bbc-series.jpg

Quote

The BBC recently announced a handful of new projects, among them a three-part series based on "The War of the Worlds," except this time the series will be set in the United Kingdom and take place in the late 1890's.

The series will be adapted by Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell writer Peter Harness and is expected to begin filming early next year. Harness says that he feels "phenomenally lucky to be writing The War Of The Worlds, and blowing up gigantic swathes of the home counties at the dawn of the 20th Century."

Little is known about just how they will tackle the series at this time, but Harness adds that H.G. Well's novel is "ground zero for all modern science fiction, and like all the best sci-fi, manages to sneak in some pretty astonishing comments on what it is to be a human being too. I'm hoping to follow in the great man's footsteps by making a terrifying, Martian-packed series which manages to be emotional, characterful, and - deep breath, dare I say it - even political at the same time."

Any of y'all remember the late '80s TV show?

Only lasted two seasons, but it was really well done, esp. for the time period (ie. years before the 1990s Outer Limits reboot).

I will stick to look forward to the BBC Victorian adaption instead, as soon as I heard MTV and Teen Wolf I lost interest in this one.

The BBC Victorian adaption sounds much more interesting than the MTV version.

Don’t worry, BBC1’s The War of the Worlds IS still coming to TV

Quote

We’re against an alien takeover as much as the next person, but isn’t it time we witnessed a brutal Martian invasion on TV? Or, more specifically, isn’t it time audiences finally saw BBC1’s adaptation of The War of the Worlds, a project unveiled over two years ago?

The three-part sci-fi series promised a faithful take on HG Wells’ sci-fi novel that was set, just like its source material, in Britain at the turn of the twentieth century. However, although the Ralph Spall and Eleanor Tomlinson drama was expected to crash down onto our screens in late 2018 or early 2019, the show never materialized.

This delay was, according to producers Mammoth Screen, down to its visual effects, with the post-production team struggling to complete the show’s many computer-generated elements by Christmas 2018.

Interestingly, it’s taken so long for the BBC to release The War of the Worlds that there’s now a competing adaptation in the works from Fox and Canal Plus – sparking a War of The War of The Worlds.

Created by BAFTA award-winning writer Howard Overman (the man behind Misfits) this contemporary reimagining of the classic story will be set in present-day Europe across eight hour-long episodes.

A release date hasn’t yet been announced for this version of The War of the Worlds – the drama is still looking for distributors – but they have released a raft of preview pictures. In fact, we have already seen more of this version of the story than the BBC’s adaptation.

Saw the first episode.

The show is trying to focus on the period and human side of the story while easing the audience into a space alien invasion. Which may or may not work, depending on how the producers decide to keep that approach going.

Just now, Comicopolis said:

I have mixed feelings about it - it's certainly grim but I don't see the point in filming a version of HG Wells' novel if you're going to change so much.

I've been reading reviews, and that seems to be the general reaction to the show. Which is a real shame if that is all the show achieves is a difference in story.
