▫️ Posted December 1, 2019 Author Share Posted December 1, 2019 That’s definitely a valid criticism as far as the characters looks and age. The CGI was off and distracting at times. Once in a while it looked flawless but there was no consistency. The tech is definitely there where a better job could have been done but I imagine the budget wasn’t up to it. Definitely easier to age actors via practical effects like they did for Deniro in Once upon a time in America. A favorite of mine. I might add that Deniro and Pacino played Deniro and Pacino while Pesci was completely uncharacteristic. I don’t think this film would have cleared $200 million at the BO. It’s a very good movie (give Pacino a best supporting actor Oscar now), but it’s also another nostalgic review of 1960s and 1970s Italian-American mafia life and, thus, a parody of Casino and Goodfellas. Nothing new here. While far from being a technically great film, Hundreds (thousands?) of viewers around the world cried watching the last 10 mins or so of Avengers Endgame. I might be wrong but I don’t think a single viewer developed an emotional connection to the characters in The Irishman. Nothing new here. I couldn't disagree with this more. This film was was very different to Goodfellas and Casino, in my opinion of course. Tonally, the latter were high energy and fast paced, The Irishman was brooding and slow. Goodfellas and Casino were celebratory and glorified the mob lifestyle. The Irishman focuses on regret and despair from an aged man trying to understand how he ended up where he did and how he betrayed those he cared about. The hits themselves were depicted matter of factly, and the lifestyle was further de-glamorized by the technique of pausing the frame when a new character was introduced to tell you how they died. To me, the Irishman is about an old man who has become desensitised to death (after committing war crimes and a long career as a hitman), where Goodfellas and, to a lesser degree, Casino, were glorifications of "the good old days". If the cast didn't include DeNiro and Pesci, do you think you'd still feel The Irishman was more of the same? Sure, it may share a culture and time period with some of Scorsese's previous films, but to me that's where the similarities end. Are all westerns parodies of each other because they take place around the same time in similar settings? I watched the clip at the end where they talked about the ages the characters were supposed to be in the beginning, they didn't look those ages to me. At one point when Pesci called DeNiro "Kid" my husband and I laughed, he looked like he was in his 60's as a "kid". I'm sure it will be nominated for all kinds of awards. Yeah, I remember seeing that photo early on when the film was shooting, definitely real. Regardless of his opinions on Marvel, and the suggestions of authenticity regarding Frank Sheeran's career. This was an amazing movie, especially if your in to that type of genre. Scorsese has done a great job of bringing this type of subculture to the big and small screen. I had an opportunity to watch it at TIFF, and couldn't have been more entertained. Scorsese didn’t “go after” Marvel. He was asked a question and honestly gave his opinion. If I tell you about the movies I don’t like, does that mean I’m going after them? What does that even mean? Everyone is entitled to their opinion including him. If anything, Coppola was the one that made the over-the-top comment that just seemed mean spirited. These guys are legendary film makers but their opinions are exactly that. As valid as yours or mine. This reminds me of a funny Bill Burr moment where he talks about the guy from Duck Dynasty that got a lot of hate for his homophobic views. Bill said, “What did you think he thought? That he would have progressive ideas about gay marriage?” Well, what did you think the guys who made The Godfather and Taxi Driver were going to think about men in tights movies? 1Cool Posted December 2, 2019 Share Posted December 2, 2019 I'm 2 hours into it and I'm enjoying it but not as much as I had hoped. It kind of has a mixup of Green Book and Goodfellas but is lacking the charm of both of these movies. Over 3 hours is just too long of a movie and it suffered for it.
