ironic that scorsese dumps on marvel movies for their lack of originality, and meanwhile he keeps making the same film over and over and over. yes, he's a great director, but how many mob films are enough? and how bout some casting? deniro playing a 40 year old? pesci looks about 90 playing 50. it was nice to see deniro and pacino in the same movie. it's called HEAT. i can't believe the irishman is getting so much acclaim. very disappointed.

Wow

i know i sound like a hater. high expectations stink. after all the praise this movie received, i expected better. it certainly isn't a bad film. but i think it's pretty clearly far from great.

slow motion used to be a great and powerful Scorsese device, but in this film just seems to be another overused Scorsese trope. do we really need it for the wedding of some character that i dont even know who it is?!?! ultimately i really found it confusing and distracting that deniro was wearing so much makeup and wigs for most of the film to play what- 40 years old? 50 years old? who even knows?

at the end of the day its a well made super long marathon about a mafia low IQ dirtbag and his sort of sweet friendship with hoffa, portrayed as a corrupt, narcissistic dirtbag himself. meh.

That’s definitely a valid criticism as far as the characters looks and age. The CGI was off and distracting at times. Once in a while it looked flawless but there was no consistency. The tech is definitely there where a better job could have been done but I imagine the budget wasn’t up to it. Definitely easier to age actors via practical effects like they did for Deniro in Once upon a time in America. A favorite of mine.
I might add that Deniro and Pacino played Deniro and Pacino while Pesci was completely uncharacteristic. I hope he gets an Oscar nom for this.

Now I see why the big studios passed on the $159 million price tag to make this film.  I don’t think this film would have cleared $200 million at the BO.  It’s a very good movie (give Pacino a best supporting actor Oscar now), but it’s also another nostalgic review of 1960s and 1970s Italian-American mafia life and, thus, a parody of Casino and Goodfellas.  Nothing new here.

While far from being a technically great film, Hundreds (thousands?) of viewers around the world cried watching the last 10 mins or so of Avengers Endgame.  I might be wrong but I don’t think a single viewer developed an emotional connection to the characters in The Irishman

Right? And where was Pacino's 'Love U 3000' and Deniro's 'This is America's butt' moments?

It was good, but too long, and the CGI was off. I watched the clip at the end where they talked about the ages the characters were supposed to be in the beginning, they didn't look those ages to me. At one point when Pesci called DeNiro "Kid" my husband and I laughed, he looked like he was in his 60's as a "kid".

I'm sure it will be nominated for all kinds of awards. It did have me looking up Jimmy Hoffa etc.

Is this photo real?

Supposedly it is.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Sheeran

Frank Sheeran was 6'4" tall compared to Robert Deniro's 5'10" height. So they had to lift him up a tiny bit.

Yeah, I remember seeing that photo early on when the film was shooting, definitely real. I think Pacino's pigeon toed stance is even funnier than DeNiro's shoes though lol Looks like one leg is trying to walk one way and the other one is going somewhere else.

This was a really good movie that I enjoyed watching in the comfort of my own home, and occasionally taking a break to go for a long walk.

Scorsese works from real life events, so his creativity can be slightly hampered, but he is doing the same genre of movies, for him to go after Marvel in the way he did was unfair.

Did you not enjoy the movie, or are you taking your opportunity to have a go at one of the greatest filmmakers in the history of film?

Regardless of his opinions on Marvel, and the suggestions of authenticity regarding Frank Sheeran's career. This was an amazing movie, especially if your in to that type of genre.

Scorsese has done a great job of bringing this type of subculture to the big and small screen.

I had an opportunity to watch it at TIFF, and couldn't have been more entertained.

I said I enjoyed the movie...-_-

But it was long...

Didn't have my full attention...

And provocative when it comes to inaccuracies.

To me it seems there is much butthurt about his Marvel opinion. Some just can’t seem to get over that. Scorsese didn’t “go after” Marvel. He was asked a question and honestly gave his opinion. If I tell you about the movies I don’t like, does that mean I’m going after them? What does that even mean? Everyone is entitled to their opinion including him. If anything, Coppola was the one that made the over-the-top comment that just seemed mean spirited. These guys are legendary film makers but their opinions are exactly that. As valid as yours or mine. This reminds me of a funny Bill Burr moment where he talks about the guy from Duck Dynasty that got a lot of hate for his homophobic views. Bill said, “What did you think he thought? That he would have progressive ideas about gay marriage?”  Well, what did you think the guys who made The Godfather and Taxi Driver were going to think about men in tights movies? Personally I’m still going to enjoy the mob and the capes.

If historically inaccurate (which it may well be) it follows the accounts of the events in the book. Sheeran’s confessions may be filled with lies but the film still represents the book.

I couldn't agree more

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie, and not for one second was I wondering "Did this really happen?":tink:

I'm 2 hours into it and I'm enjoying it but not as much as I had hoped.  It kind of has a mixup of Green Book and Goodfellas but is lacking the charm of both of these movies. Over 3 hours is just too long of a movie and it suffered for it.  I'll see how it ends but its getting a B- up to this point.

A little to philosophical. I wasn't wondering that at all when I was watching this movie. I have so many things to say on this guys tweet, but unfortunately it would be against posting guidelines.

I'm glad he was able to elaborate on his tweet
