Printing error? Dirt?

I've got two copies of Uncanny X-men #221 and I noticed a black mark on the right side of Sinisters face on the first page of both issues. Anyone know if it's dirt or a print error? Sub question how would it affect a CGC grade

Hard to tell from the pictures but it looks like ink transfer. How do the blacks on the inside cover match up?

Could be. There isn't a lot of blacks on the inside cover. There's an ad for M&M's; colors brown, red, black outlines. The brown and reds line up with the markings along with a small black spot for the mouth of the m&m. Maybe if the cover has shifted over the years the colors could have rubbed off.

i've seen this before in other books.

 

if it matches with the ad on the inside cover, it's for sure ink transfer

Usually a transfer occurs when the cover inks are still wet. This would make it a production defect and something CGC would not weigh heavily or at all.
