Riverdale Pilot Officially Ordered At The CW

2016 is sure to be a major year for Archie Comics, as America’s Favorite Teenager celebrates 75 years of existence. But the party kicked off in a major way today with news that The CW has officially picked up the pilot episode for the live-action “Riverdale” TV series, to start filming this spring.

The one-hour drama will be written by Archie Comics Chief Creative Officer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and produced by Warner Brothers Studios and Berlanti Productions and has been described as a subversive take on the classic Archie mythos. Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schecter, Jon Goldwater, and Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa serve as executive producers.

The live-action series offers a bold, subversive take on Archie, Betty, Veronica, and their friends, exploring small-town life and the darkness and weirdness bubbling beneath Riverdale’s wholesome facade. The show will focus on the eternal love triangle of Archie Andrews, girl-next-door Betty Cooper, and rich socialite Veronica Lodge, and will include the entire cast of characters from the comic books—including Archie’s rival, Reggie Mantle, and his slacker best friend, Jughead Jones.

Riverdale Casts Its Jughead And Betty

The CW has cast two of the four leads in its pilot inspired by Archie Comics, Riverdale.

Lili Reinhart (Surviving Jack) will play Betty Cooper, a “sweet, studious, eager-to-please and wholesome” teenager with a crush on her best friend, Archie Andrews. When she decides she’s tired of playing the role of perfect daughter, she gets some advice from her new friend, Veronica, for advice.

Cole Sprouse (The Suite Life of Zack and Cody) will play Jughead Jones, “a heartthrob with a philosophical bent.” Jughead is Archie’s former best friend and is still sore about their falling out.

Archie and Josie Cast For Riverdale

According to Deadline, New Zealander KJ Apa will play series lead Archie Andrews in The CW's upcoming revamp of the Archie Comics universe. Ashleigh Murray has been cast as Josie, of Josie and the Pussycats fame.

According to the TV series, Archie is "an intense, conflicted teen, a boyish high school sophomore who got pumped up over the summer working construction and is now juggling the interest of several girls, as well as trying to balance his passion for writing and performing music -- against the wishes of his father and his football coach."

Usually easygoing, Fred Andrews is the owner of a construction firm who is hoping his son, who worked for him all summer, will someday take over the family business.

RIVERDALE Casts Madelaine Petsch As Cheryl Blossom

Cheryl Blossom might sound sweet, but the Archie Comics character, at least in the form she's coming to The CW's Riverdale is anything but.

Deadline reports that Madelaine Petsch has been cast in the role, which they describe as "rich, entitled and never accountable. A manipulative mean girl who kills with kindness, she recently lost her twin brother in a mysterious accident."
