Try shining a flashlight on the side where the spine is. Shine it at an angle from the bottom corner of the spine and slowly move the light along the spine, preferably in a dark room. Usually works for me. Sometimes it'll help if you use a magnifying glass. 

I have a bunch of 9.6 & 9.8 the difference is usually a couple of very tiny hairline stress lines on the spine not visible by just looking at it
