Raw,Restored,Conserved prices

24 posts in this topic

Hi. I'm brand new to the board but was told that the guys and gals on here are really nice and helpful collectors. I have a question as I've heard and been told different things over the years but didn't know if there was any sort of consensus opinion. What would be the percentage difference in the price? What is the price differential in the following:

1.raw vs CGC slabbed

2.no Restoration vs Conserved

3.No restoration vs Slight Restoration,Moderate Restoration,Extensive Restoration

4.Slight Restoration vs Moderate or Extensive Restoration

5.Conserved vs Slight,Moderate, or Extensive Restoration

Just wondering as prices vary a lot so I'm sure opinions will as well. Just kind of wondering what a consensus view would be.

I really think these questions have no definitive answers = no consensus, just opinions. To be honest, these questions are so absurd I'm thinking this is an experienced Board member pulling a prank ? :baiting:

'I have a question' usually implies there is one question. I have a question.....

What would be the percentage difference in price between a new car and a used car ?

What is the difference in price for a CGC 7.5 with a stain or a CGC 7.5 with a crease ?

What is the difference in price for a raw E-Bay mint vs a raw E-Bay unread ?

What is the difference in price between a brown banana and a green banana ?

And finally the biggest question of all....Have the Boards ever reached a consensus on anything ?

If you define "the boards" as a very small % who voted in that poll then you might be correct. :baiting:

Thanks for the kind words. lol. "Absurd" huh? My apologies, I didn't realize you were on the boards God. My I have your permission to ask a question without ridicule? I asked because I'm trying to get a feel of what the CGC community sees as prices vs other factors. If I knew I wouldn't ask. This reminds me why I don't get on internet boards very often.

Bomber-bob is not wrong with his answer.

You're asking questions that are both huge and tiny. Someone could write an economics thesis upon these or simply look up the data on a specific book on eBay. :gossip:

Welcome to the boards.......

Your questions are pretty apples to oranges. Kind of hard to answer in a concise manner. I'll give it a crack, but keep in mind, you can get a lot of different opinions on the topic that are more concise and informed than mine.

1.I guess for raw, many use OSPG for pricing or a percentage of. Buying raw for me means the book has to come from a seller who has a guarantee against restoration found down the road, or from a seller who's reputation in terms of grading is second to none. CGC books are priced quite frequently using GPA, which reports recent sales.

2,3,4.Unrestored books will always bring a premium price when compared to conserved or restored books. I'd guess pricing is based on unrestored value and taken down with a multiple based on the amount (and quality) of the work done on the book. A restored book with what could be deemed as removable restoration can bring a slight premium over those other restored books who aren't deemed as such.

5.I think conserved pricing is more indicative of the amount of conservation done, and the quality of the work. I don't know for sure the way that Conserved label books have been selling or percentages of unrestored books therein.

Hopefully, those on the boards who know a pile more about this than I do can chime in with additional info.

conserved books should be valued by the market over restored books, but there's not enough data out there to say that that's how it is.

raw vs slabbed. Well The cost of slabbing is X. Cost of a slabbed copy minus X should give you raw. The question is how spot on do you think the grading is? What sort of price swing would occur if the grade comes back lower/higher? The bigger the price swing, the lower the raw price (since the risk sits with the submitter not the seller). Is this a book that is often restored? How sure are you this is not a restored copy? Very sure? higher price closer to the Slab-X cost. Less sure? Further from the Slab-X cost.

as others have said, even one question has a vast number of factors to weight in.

Slight vs Moderate vs Extensive also doesn't factor in "reversability" (the ability to remove said restoration) .

Also the market doesnt treat all restoration inside a type the same. Slight color touch might be treated differently than slight tear seal...

The other problem is books with restoration are so unique and dont sell in large enough quantities to make any sort of definitive statement about market reaction.

In Basic the values (in order)

1. CGCed copy

2. Raw Copy

3. CGCed Conserved Copy

4. CGC Restoration A1 thru A5*

5. CGC Restoration B1 thru B5*

6. CGC Restoration C1 thru C5*

7. Married books

8. Trimmed books

*there's probably some overlap between low grade A books (i.e A4-5) and high grade B books (B1-2), and low grade B books and high grade C books.

Im actually not sure about the married books, they might fall right in the mids of the restored copies. Trimmed copies seem to be the ones that sell for the least among all of them.

Also Im sure there are a multitude of examples that disprove this ranking...

Also the rarer the books (GA) hold more of their value in restored partially because there are fewer opportunities to own, so people are more leiniant with GA restored books.

a mid-grade GA color touched copy might get 60% of universal value

while

a mid-grade SA color touched copy might get 40% of universal vaule

also again, restored books trade less frequently, and are more 1 of a kind (due to all of their sub-types of restoration) its very hard to do apples to apples comparisons...

Okay, I apologize for the mocking tone. It's just that you asked broad stroked questions to be answered in a percentage form. It can't be done. I sensed some practical joking going on here, apparently I was wrong. I must be too paranoid.

Permission denied.

Internet chat boards are exclusively for mockery, tomfoolery, cynicism and ridicule. The rest of the Internet is for porn.
