Golden Age Political Comic Books - NO MODERN POLITICS!
2 2

98 posts in this topic

This is a little different and maybe pushing the boundaries of a comic book, but it does tell a story with pictures. This was published Dec 1944 to show that the Lend-Lease program was a success. It is 64 pages and the only colors and black and orange. There are some striking images in the book.

These are fantastic BOOT. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the feedback! Glad you liked them!

I'm interested to see a second known copy of "Startling Facts about Dictatorship". That has a great center spread.

That it does!

Very cool thread. I've at times thought it would be fun to collect political comics, but not enough GGA, decapitation or bondage covers.

Maybe you could focus on the crossovers...

Amazing! (worship)

and what a great and timely idea for this thread

for those of you who may not know it, Boot is the most knowledgeable man on the planet when it comes to promos. He could write the book on the subject. And will, apparently!

Wow, thanks, Doc! But you're too kind... I just like free comics!

An amazing and educational thread. You can probably learn more American history here than in a lot of schools.
Thanks so much for the comment, Larry. That is really an honor!

Here are three more that turned up...The Will To Win is not strictly political. It's about Goodwill Industries, but features FDR.

Great piece! Love the bold graphic storytelling!

Yup, I recall he already posted it and I love it!

Hey, didn’t we use to have another thread (or two) about wartime printed material – more or less graphic in nature or interesting?

My research is now focused once more on this, and I am collecting rare and unusual items from everywhere. I recall for sure we had a thread where we showed propaganda illustrations, posters, postcards, leaflets et al. besides comics – that would be great to recover.

Been looking for one of these for a good while...

I'd love to see more of this one. Lots of Wood elements in there and a hint of Toth. Is the artist listed?

Couldn't find a signature. Here are a couple of interior pages...

Used in SOTI

I wonder which version came first. Maybe the black suited one, and they changed it to the gray suit because he looked too much like a funeral director.

Clearly neither Toth nor Wood, but what a strange strange book! Thanks for sharing.

STARTLING FACTS!

The National Association of Manufacturers published this series of comic books in the 1950s to show how capitalism and business help protect the American way of life. The comic books describe failed socialist and totalitarian experiments in history, and describe how to protect the American way of life from impending communism. They show how strong manufacturing helps preserve our country's freedom and standard of living. Effective comic books – too bad they are so rare!

Another set has entered the building

Tomorrow The World

During World War II, there were not many publications that would even attempt to evoke sympathy for a young Nazi. Published in 1945 by All American Comics (Superman’s D.C. Comics) “Tomorrow the World” looks at a tough question. How were we as Americans supposed to deal with the hatred of Naziism as expressed by a young German boy visiting United States? The comic book was effective in making people think about tough human questions. It ends with the immortal line, “What shall we do with Emil Bruckner?”

Outstanding thread!

Here is another of those 1945 DC giveaways.

A Ride in the Sky

In this one Hop Harrigan takes up a Nazi general in a plane to show him the error of his ways. He teaches him honor in the sky. In the end the Nazi renounces his Nazi ideology. This one is interesting because penciled at the bottom on back cover is a note that it is from the "Southern Confrence for Human Welfare" in 1945.

Not in Overstreet and only one I know of...
