How Ben Affleck Can Exit the DCEU

The opening for Ben Affleck's Batman exit in Flashpoint is clear: Flash and Batman's conversation about their shared experience with violent loss is a powerful theme of "Flashpoint," and it could be the perfect launchpad for the movie version's story. Batman v Superman pretty clearly established just how badly Bruce Wayne was traumatized by his parents' deaths, and Justice League quickly introduced the theme of Barry Allen being too focused on his tragic past, instead of the future he could have.

Having the two characters open Flashpoint with a meaningful conversation about what could've been, would bring Affleck's Batman to the close of his character arc, while also providing the emotional catalyst for Barry Allen to play god with history, and use his power to alter the entire DCEU. DC fans everywhere want Flashpoint to introduce the Thomas Wayne Batman and Martha Wayne Joker - especially if they're played by their Batman v Superman actors Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Lauren Cohan.

The New Batman

Once Flashpoint is over, the DCEU could go down one of two easy routes:

  • Make Jeffrey Dean Morgan's Thomas Wayne Batman a permanent fixture of the "fixed" DCEU timeline.
  • When Flash returns to his "fixed" timeline, reveal that a different Batman now wears the cowl, making it a lasting consequence that Barry Allen has to live with thereafter.

The beauty with option #2 is that it doesn't disqualify Affleck's Batman from making an appearance in a future DCEU project, if so desired. Even if a different Batman is introduced at the end of Flashpoint, the story of how he got the cowl (a subject for Matt Reeves' The Batman, perhaps?) doesn't have to involve the death of Affleck's Bruce Wayne. He could have simply retired or been injured - developments which have both occurred in DC Comics lore.

It was just as well BvS clearly established that fact. I mean, up until the movie was released, we'd had no idea...

Jeffrey Dean Morgan Teases Taking Batman Role, Again

During a panel at Walker Stalker Con in New Jersey, The Walking Dead's Jeffrey Dean Morgan has once again teased an upcoming role as Batman. Morgan, who plays the villainous Negan on the AMC zombie drama, was asked by a fan during his panel if he would ever consider doing acting in theater. Through the witty actor's path of responding, he ended up teasing the possible upcoming role as the next Batman on the big screen..

"There's a role in the DC Universe I've got my eye on," Morgan said.

This isn't the first time Morgan has teased a role as Batman. The actor has been nodding to the gig ever since his role as Thomas Wayne in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

For now, Morgan is being kept busy with his role as Negan on The Walking Dead, which wrapped production on its eighth season in November and will pick up for Season 9 in late April. He also has Rampage coming to theaters in 2018, in which he co-stars with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, for another Warner Bros. film.

FLASHPOINT Will Be Commencing Production "Pretty Soon", According To JUSTICE LEAGUE Star Ezra Miller

Quote

At ACE Comic-Con this past weekend, Miller seemingly offered a hint to a fan that Flashpoint will be commencing production sooner than we thought. According to the user Daniel Eliesen (via Screen Rant), who spoke to Miller directly, the actor will be commencing work on the project soon.

"Just asked Ezra when are we getting Flashpoint and he said 'we’re starting it pretty soon, can’t wait.'"

While this is still not a ton of concrete information, the film seems to at least still be a priority for Warner Bros. to get made.

‘Flash’ Standalone Film Taps Directors John Francis Daley, Jonathan Goldstein (EXCLUSIVE)

“Vacation” helmers John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein are in negotiations to direct “Flashpoint,” the Flash standalone movie starring Ezra Miller. Warner Bros. had no comment.

The studio had initially courted Ben Affleck to return to the director’s chair, but he passed on the gig. By tapping Daley and Goldstein, the studio seems to eye a comedic tone for the film, given the duo’s directing background on movies like “Vacation” and the upcoming “Game Night,” starring Jason Bateman.

The two are no strangers to the comic-book world, having penned the -script to the smash hit “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” which they were also on the shortlist to direct.

“Flashpoint” had been on hold since director Rick Famuyiwa stepped away from the project. While looking for his replacement, the studio decided to take the -script in a different direction. Joby Harold has turned in a new draft after a page-one rewrite.

Executives took their time in finding a new helmer because Miller, who plays the speedy superhero, is busy getting ready to shoot “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald,” the second installment in the “Fantastic Beasts” franchise.

FORBES.COM: 'Flashpoint' Could Be 'Justice League 2' Or Another DC Films Reboot

Quote

Fresh off the presses, The Hollywood Reporter is announcing that John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein will be directing Flashpoint (starring Ezra Miller as The Flash) for Warner Bros. The move comes less than a week after WB scheduled David F. Sanders’ Shazam for April of 2019 and less than a month after anointing Walter Hamada (who helped turn The Conjuring into a horror franchise powerhouse over at New Line) as the proverbial new head of DC Films and promoting Toby Emmerich to Chairman of Warner Bros. Motion Pictures Group. The would-be Flash solo film has shuffled through directors over the last few years, but this time WB went with a writer/director team with experience working with WB.

Say what you will about the films they’ve written (the star-driven Horrible Bosses, Sony's Spider-Man: Homecoming) or written-and-directed (New Line's 2015 Vacation remake and the upcoming Game Night), and rightfully wish that the studio had been a bit more outside-the-box (ie – a woman or minority filmmaker) in their choice, but Daley and Goldstein have a certain amount of in-studio experience. Flashpoint will be their third studio feature, which (arguably) puts them on equal experience footing with Tim Burton before Batman and Ryan Coogler before Black Panther.

Without presuming that Flashpoint will be an exact adaptation of the comic arc (no more than Captain America: Civil War was a blow-by-blow adaptation of that Mark Millar 2006 comic book story), the story offers two interesting opportunities. First, if they so choose, the powers that be can make Flashpoint into not just a Flash movie but a glorified Justice League 2 with appearances by any superhero (Wonder Woman, Superman, Aquaman, etc.) they want. Again, while Civil War was Captain America 3 it was also a huge MCU mythology episode that doubled as an Avengers drama. And the time travel story also presents another opportunity for another soft reboot for the troubled DC Films franchise.

Like Barry Allen in the third season of The Flash, at some point, Warner Bros. and related friends may have to make peace with the chaos they’ve created and work their way through the best they can with what they’ve made. Wonder Woman is on sturdy footing and I believe in James Wan’s ability to make a solid Aquaman movie. All hope is not lost. Constant do-overs inspire no confidence in the long-term picture and risk alienating those who were fans since the beginning. At some point, you can do what you can to make lemonade out of lemons, which in itself would be far more artistically interesting than merely doing glorified do-overs every time a new movie comes out.

Just read this thread. Seems like to me DC just keeps going deeper down the rabbit hole.

Marvel basically used the origins of the characters from the comics. It worked. In almost every case. DC has to make up this time travels that only works for the few thousand people who read their comics.

I think they should just give up.

hope this works but mentioning these directors (Vacation 34 on Metacritic) in the same breath as Ryan Coogler (Fruitvale Station 85 & Creed 82) is ridiculous.

Well, you have to look at the history of their work and how the studio is looking to engage with them. Look at Jon Watts and MCU/Sony

- Cop Car: 66 Metacritics score

- Clown: 42 Metacritics score

But when they saw what he did with those kids in 'Cop Car', it probably made sense to go with Jon Watts because he could bring out of them what they needed. And he was a young enough director, Kevin Feige could also guide him in the MCU way.

That's not coming across too biased and assuming only a few thousand people read DC comics.

Looks like Flashpoint has a new set of directors:

I haven't read the original THR article but here's Scott Mendelson's take.

I'm intrigued because I still think of John Francis Daley as "Sam" from "Freaks and Geeks" and Lance from "Bones."

But yes, like Ron Howard, he's transitioned behind the camera, having written Horrible Bosses, Horrible Bosses 2, Vacation, and Spider-Man: Homecoming, and directed Vacation and Game Night.

To be fair, from what I understand about current comics- print runs are just a fraction of what they were in decades prior (say pre mid 1990s and earlier). Outside of Batman, I'm curious about the spectrum of print runs for DC. Is it possible some regular titles have less than 10,000 copies printed?

According to ICv2.com Flash number 36 came in at number 21 out of 300 for the month of December with 47,998 units sold.

Yeah.

To put that in perspective, Flash in December outsold Superman, Action Comics, and all the main X-Men and Wolverine titles (X-Men Blue, X-Men Gold, Astonishing X-Men, Old Man Logan, and All-New Wolverine).

See the full chart here: https://icv2.com/articles/markets/view/39349/top-300-comics-december-2017

You have to go down to # 170 on the sales chart to see a book with under 10,000 copies. And consider, back in the day Previews/Diamond only showed us the top 100.

Based on the numbers, the more accurate statement would have been: Marvel has to relaunch new #1s every year that only works for the few thousand people who read their comics  lol

Even the once might Star Wars franchise is in the sewers now with Vader needing a relaunch and the new #1s not generating much interest. Marvel books are nearing the unreadable point on most titles, but as I have stated before, it does not matter as the movie returns are where the real money is at.
