Why yes. Yes there has been a book like that. Mister X's 1st appearance. Although his image also appeared on an album cover before this.

What made me ask this actually was Gwenom. I don't know if Spider-Gwen will ever encounter the symbiote but if she does wouldn't that Guardians of Knowhere variant technically be her first appearance as Gwenom?

I think Batman 1 may have been released first. It's Spring 1940, whereas Tec 40 is June 1940. The general belief is that the second Joker story was originally scheduled for Tec 40 ( The splash having the same action as the cover), but for whatever reason was included in Batman 1, which meant the inventory had to be pulled up by an issue for Detective.

Mike Mignola's Hellboy first appearance (as we would recognize him) is on Dime Press #4. An Italian pulp GN. He appears no where within the book.

 

 

Prototype appearance. Even Mike Mignola has stated he wasn't finished with the design of the character at that point. Though he clearly was locking it all down, including 'Hellboy' noted at the bottom of the cover.

 

Mike says that Dime Press #4 was probably the first prototype…he hadn't figured the character out yet and they did color him blue….and as for HB's first official appearance he said it's hard to say where it was without a huge explanation…. - Christine Mignola
