Krypton Star On His Role’s Superman Connections & Show's DCEU Status

The CW may have a premium on DC Comics television shows, but the network will have a challenger soon enough. SyFy is expected to release a Superman-centric series called Krypton, and the show will focus on the alien planet’s lore. Earlier this year, SyFy confirmed it put in a series order for the show. Now, the star of Krypton is opening up about his role and confirming its place in the DCEU.

Cameron Cuffe is the actor tasked with leading Krypton as he will play Seg-El, the grandfather to Superman. Krypton will tell the alien’s story far before the Man of Steel is born, and Cuffe recently dished details about his new role with CTV’s etalk (via HH).

“Seg-El grew up in quite a prominent family, one of the great houses of Krypton, which very early on in the story is thrown away,” Cuffe said.

“We cast him down to the lowest cast in society. So we have this once-mighty legacy which has sort of been thrown into the mud and he is trying to survive and trying to regain that honor that has been taken from him.”

When etalk said much of Krypton’s style can be seen in Man of Steel, Cuffe agreed the aesthetics match since the SyFy series is compliant with the DCEU. The actor then went on to tease the show’s overall tone as he said Krypton is what happens when Superman meets Game of Thrones.

“I think we have built this world, which is so exciting on so many levels, there is loads of action and there is a lot of political drama as well as personal drama, so there is a lot going on, on the show.”

Krypton is expected to be a midseason debut for SyFy in its 2017/2018 season.

New Description Of The San Diego Comic-Con KRYPTON Trailer Surfaces Online

Krypton.jpg

Quote

Last night a trailer for the show premiered at the San Diego Comic-Con preview night, and Collider was there and has relayed back a description of the trailer.

"The trailer begins with majestic and interplanetary imagery and a narration from Seg-El (Cameron Cuffe), grandfather of Kal-El, a.k.a. Superman.

“Kal-El, my future grandson. I know you will fight to save your world, just as I fought to save mine,” he says over clips which feature other cast members including Ann Ogbomo‘s Alura Zod, Georgina Campbell‘s Lyta Zod, and Ian McElhinney‘s Val-El, Seg’s grandfather, who reminds him not to forget the name of his family. There’s even a person with multiple golden faces seen in the reel, implying that we will see any number of interesting and strange creatures on the doomed planet Krypton. (Ann Ogbomo may be recognizable to DC fans as she recently played the Amazon Phillipus in Wonder Woman earlier this year.)

While there is some imagery suggesting ties to Man of Steel and the DC cinematic universe, including the design of the “S” which in the films implied hope, there’s also a nod to a previous take on the franchise, as some bars from John Williams‘ classic Superman theme can be heard near the end. Those notes and the trailer itself seemed to elicit a positive response and applause from the audience."

Krypton Showrunner Says Series Will Explore Role Of Religion

krypton-995752.jpg

Quote

There have been only passing references to Kryptonian religion in the various live-action iterations of Superman's mythology, from Superman: The Movie to Man of Steel to the Supergirl TV series, but it seems the religion and mythology of Krypton will loom large in a series that acknowledges, but does not star Superman.

”The world of Kandor in our show is a theocracy, and the religious guild is very powerful,” Welsh said of Krypton’s culture in the show. “The political landscape is turbulent; there’s a very rigid class divide, and there’s the rankles district, and there’s the guided area — that’s the science guild, the religious guild, the House of Zod or the House of El. There’s a class divide and a big part of that class divide is religion.”

Welsh said that Raoism is the dominant religion in the show — not surprising, given that it has always been portrayed as the primary and/or official religion of Krypton.

Ray Donovan alumna Paula Malcomson has been tapped for a pivotal guest-starring role and Blake Ritson (Da Vinci’s Demons) has been cast as a series regular (and a villain) in Syfy’s Superman prequel series Krypton, set for premiere in 2018.

Malcomson will play Charys, the matriarch of House El. Charys helps her son Seg navigate the treacherous pitfalls of Kandor City, their Kryptonian home embattled with oppression and revolt. The role has been recast after the pilot.

'Krypton' Premiere Date Announced, New Photos Revealed

Quote

Syfy has officially announced a March 21 premiere date for Krypton, their upcoming hour-long drama centered on the families of Superman, General Zod, and other Kryptonian notables.

Both the release date, and a new synopsis (seen below), leaked online recently, but the official Syfy announcement comes with three new photos from the set, including two of series star Cameron Cuffe.

“It’s about the struggle of the House of El and how it redeems its honor,” Cuffe told ComicBook.com. “Very early on in our story though no fault of Seg’s own, he goes from the very top of Kryptonian society, this great House of El, and ends up growing up at the very bottom and having to struggle to survive….The story for Seg is how that symbol starts to mean what it means, and how he grows to fill it.”
