It Sounds Like We Could Eventually See The Green Lantern Corps In Syfy's KRYPTON

Quote

The first season of Krypton will only run for ten episodes but the signs are all pointing to it expanding the cosmic side of the DC Universe on the small screen in a significant way. That was hinted at by both David Goyer and Geoff Johns at the Television Critics Association winter press tour yesterday when they suggested that both the Green Lantern Corps and Omega Men could show up down the line.

"The deal with the show is it’s kind of this gateway into the DC science fiction universe," Goyer explained. "Because also the Phantom Zone figures into this show, it means we can delve into other times and planets eventually." That opens the door to a lot of different storytelling possibilities.

"Any of these characters could eventually show up," Johns added before Goyer piped in with, "Even the inclusion of Adam Strange, that should tip you off that it’s not just going to be on Krypton."

According to Deadline, British actress Hannah Waddingham has been cast as Jax-Ur on SyFy's Krypton.

Traditionally depicted as a man, Jax-Ur is an amoral but brilliant Kryptonian scientist who was sentenced to The Phantom Zone along with General Zod and the rest of his minions. This small-screen take on the character is described as having "deep ties to Krypton’s past, Jax-Ur is now determined to bring radical change to Krypton as leader of the underground terrorist organization, Black Zero."

Waddingham was primarily known for her work on the stage, but she'll be most recognizable 'round these parts for her small role as Septa "Shame Nun" Unella on Game of Thrones. She's also appeared in the likes of 12 Monkeys and In The Club.

SyFy has debuted (via TV Line) the first official key-art for their upcoming Superman prequel series, Krypton.

The poster gives us a new look at Cameron Cuffe as The Man of Steel's grandfather Seg-El, as he stands in the middle of the iconic "S" symbol holding a very familiar-looking cape. Over the course of the series, Seg-El will be pulled into a power struggle among the doomed planet's elite classes.

Krypton is set to premiere on March 21.

'Krypton': First Look at Brainiac

Quote

Brainiac is coming to Krypton and we now have our first look at the classic Superman villain. The villain is played by Blake Ritson on the SyFy's Superman prequel series, which is set to premiere this March.

The character is further introduced in the video above, where you can also catch a glimpse of Brainiac's iconic skull-shaped spaceship.

"I've played characters who've objectively committed monstrous actions, but feel entirely justified, as they've acted from a misplaced sense of a noble cause," Ritson tells USA Today. "Generally speaking, people cast themselves as the hero in their own narrative.

"Yes, he traverses the universe in a gigantic skull ship, ripping cities out of planets, miniaturizing them and placing them on board. But he does so in the spirit of conservation. In his mind, he's committed to the ultimate philanthropic act: saving all of creation. In many ways it's analogous to Noah plucking out two of every animal to ensure their survival, even while knowing that others must perish."

Wow.  I hadn't thought of Brainiac as a Noah-figure, but now that I think about it, in a way he is!

So interesting!

Syfy's 'Krypton' Is a Rich, Exciting World You'll Want to See More Of

Quote

The Krypton seen in Man of Steel, a fully-realized techno-dystopia based in large part on the ‘80s reboot given to the world by writer/artist John Byrne, is not completely the basis for the world of the show, but it is clear that they share a lot of DNA.

The series is set 200 years (that's Kryptonian years) before the destruction of the planet, and follows the exploits of Superman's grandfather, Seg-El (Cameron Cuffe) as he and Earth-born time traveler Adam Strange (Shaun Sipos) work together to save the planet from Brainiac. The Collector of Worlds is coming to destroy Krypton early, Strange explains, so that Seg's grandson Kal-El is never conceived and Superman never makes it to Earth.

A big part of Krypton’s appeal will be its world building, which has been conceived down to meticulous detail.

Like Marvel’s Asgard, it applies an old-Europe-style caste system, but with a futuristic twist. “Can you believe our ancestors used to carry babies in their wombs?” One character asks in the pilot, mystified. In another scene, a super-computer reveals the name, appearance, and future skills of someone’s prospective baby based on a thumb .

Another important element of the series is the score, by Pinar Toprak. It plays, much like the Richard Donner Superman movies does, as a relatively straightforward action score, foregoing alien-sounding instrumentals in favor of strings and brass of a "hero score." The effect is, like so many other things, to downplay the alien-ness of Krypton in general and Seg in particular, making them easier to relate to on the audience's own terms.

The look and feel of the world communicate that you are "elsewhere," but emotionally the pilot tells you in every way possible "these are people you want to like." And it is effective.

Krypton premieres on March 21 on Syfy.
