More Fun Comics #13 Billy Wright pedigree (DC, 1936) CGC VG/FN 5.0 Cream to off-white pages.

 

Also known as V2#1. Unlike many of the covers from this long ago era, which frankly really aren't funny in today's world, I smile at this one. :)

 

Heritage has offered just three copies in 15 years. Only one copy grades higher and only five total on the CGC census.

More Fun Comics #101 (DC, 1945) CGC 8.5 Off-white to white pages.

 

The origin and first appearance of Superboy was in this unassuming package, and his introduction forced the Spectre out of More Fun (this would be his last appearance in the title), and actually out of comics entirely until 1966. Indeed, this issue was the catalyst for Siegel and Shuster (the latter being pulled along by Siegel) to sue DC two years later for the copyright to both Superboy and Superman. They lost on Superman but prevailed on Superboy, although a settlement transferred rights back to DC.

It's the last issue of my favorite DC series, sigh. This final issue is called "scarce" by both Overstreet and Gerber. The title had gone to an all-humor format by this time; the best-known of the characters are the wacky detective twins Dover and Clover. The issue has cover and interior art by Howie Post.

 

There are only TWO graded copies of this issue. Heritage has only sold three copies in 15 years, and no copies in ten years!

 

There will NOT be a better copy of this incredibly scarce, if not rare, book.

More Fun Comics #14 (DC, 1936) CGC FN 6.0 Light tan to off-white pages.

 

The first appearance of a Superman prototype by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. The character in question, known as Dr. Occult, had in fact appeared in previous issues of the series, but this issue saw him get super strength, the power of flight, a blue costume, and a red cape! Reportedly, Siegel and Shuster had already conceived the idea for Superman and were giving their concept a tryout of sorts.

 

This October 1936 issue preceded Action Comics #1 by over a year and a half. The issue is a Gerber "7,". The Church copy is a mere 0.5 higher at CGC 6.5.

More Fun Comics #15 (DC, 1936) CGC 5.0 Off-white to white pages.

 

This issue rates a Gerber "8". Only two copies grade higher. Heritage has had only five copies ever offered.

 

Vincent Sullivan provided the cover, and contributed interior artwork for this early issue, as did Creig Flessel, Lou O'Mealia, and Joe Shuster. Siegel and Shuster's Dr. Occult is a highlight.

 

Sharp looking 5.0. I have no idea why it graded so low. What a beauty for a book 80 years old!!!

More Fun Comics #37 (DC, 1937) CGC 5.5 Cream to Off-white pages.

 

Cover artist Creig Flessel, who I consider one of the best EVER, could render humorous covers just as well as adventure images, and the football scene depicted here makes us wonder if Red Grange ever had to deal with anything like this! Other contributing artists include big names such as Joe Shuster, Bob Kane, and Bernard Baily.

 

Issues in the 30s are very, very difficult to find.

Gerber rates this issue a 7 or "scarce" on their Scarcity Index, and this copy is one of only five that have been certified as unrestored by CGC to date. Only one copy grades higher.

 

The cover is by Vin Sullivan, with interior art by Joe Shuster, Bernard Baily, and Bob Kane.

 

Not an easy issue to find, I can attest to that!
