Tarzan # 21 - Cover, IFC and assorted panels.

Two stories in this one plus the continuing back-up: Two against the Jungle.

In the first story, Tarzan helps out a stranded girl who he dubs Princess Elaine of Ohio when he has to help provide her shelter in the golden city of Cathne. Still, she is clearly menaced of rape in the story and only saved from the local villain who uses her gun backwards on himself. Nevertheless, she is clearly in despair as seen in this terrific panel (really blown up below) which reminded me so much of Toth's romance work -

They finally escape and BOOM, you turn the page and land on this unusual 2/3rd splash that turns out to be so effective in the story -

Check out that lion's head and the one below facing us from the cover of Rex, the Wonder Dog # 2 - quite similar -

As they escape, they are helped by apes, check out this page which I found to be fantastic, the best way I can put it is that the action is very fluid throughout the page -

And that was just the first story! In the second story, we revisit warring ancient roman cities with the action focusing on a friend of Paul d'Arnot who had been taken prisoner on a war galley -

Very nice post, Scrooge.  Toth was a big fan of Jesse Marsh so it's possible he had seen the story and used it for the cover.  It's also possible they were both working off of some picture from National Geographic.

Tarzan # 22 - Cover and panels.

Cover - Awww -

An entry not nearly as much fun as # 21. Two stories. First, a scientist betrayed by the witch doctor who he'd hired as help in his lab where he can control the growth of animals leading to giant eagles and shrews and diminutive elephants.

Here come the shrews -

But, the deep blue and strong blacks taking over the night scenes are always a pleasure in these issues. Nowhere else on top of my head do I remember these bold color choices to depict the time of day. We get bright days and dark nights in this series -

In the second story, we follow up from issue # 21 and Elaine and Jathon return to Cathne in pursuit of thieves who are after the golden domes of the city … they end up defeated by wheels and hungry lions -

In the back-up, there is this mean (and weird) wrestling lion who doesn't make life easy for the antelope! -

Love those later issue Star Spangleds with the Ghost Breaker! I've finished them off except for that pesky coverless one...hm

Me, too.  Underrated books, imo.
