One of my favorite covers in this short run.

I think this cover is also by Infantino, although not credited by CGC.  An even 10 of these on the census, with the highest only an 8.0.

Not very pretty, but it was a cheap.  Part of my quest to get every DC first issue from the 1950s.

Tarzan # 23 - Cover, IFC and assorted panels.

Two stories in this one plus the continuing back-up: Two against the Jungle.

I found the first story was stronger while the art in the second story was stronger. Lots of inner monologue in the first story as Tarzan is imprisoned and later has to rescue his animal friends. The introspection was well done and sustained the story. In the second story, there is more action and a diverse cast of characters which helped highlight Marsh's abilities better.

In the first story, M'Buna, the witch doctor leads animal hunters to Tarzan's "territory". Together they capture Tarzan and sell him to Sheik Abou Ben Ephraim who bent on revenge shackles Tarzan. N'Kima comes to the rescue! Bravado or not (see panel), N'Kima saves the day. From then on it's a chase to rescue Jad-Dal-Ja (which for some reason I can't read without thinking of Jean Valjean) and the others that have been shipped to Florida. This leads to a night-time race through town to the airport, fraught with funny situations (see below) -

In the second story, Shiftas move into the territory and aim to eliminate every Europeans, including the Kentons. We start with Tarzan warning them to join the légion for protection. This leads to a superb panels with them on their way (see below). Carol ends up separated from her parents when the Shiftas attack. Tarzan get the Kentons to safety, looks for Carol who thankfully had already been saved by some great apes. On the way to reunite Carol with her parents, Tarzan overhears the plot of the Shiftas. Countermeasures are put in motion and with the help of Tantor, the menace is squashed. As you can see, much more action in this second yarn. Nice movement in the art as well (see below) -
