Western Comics # 20

19 posts in this topic

Hi

Just received Western Comics 20 and don't agree with grade supplied by reputed dealer where no mention of any defects.

Comic presents well but has significant spine split and all corners are chipped.

Please see scans and photos.

Nice looking but what would you grade at given the defects. I would say 6.5/7.0 E.g My Startling Comics # 49 look nicer but have been downgraded to 6.5 by cgc for detached centrefold.

A bit disappointed that the spine split not mentioned in description given by seller.

Opinions would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Mikey

Yes. If he called it 6.0 I might just keep it without comment to dealer if I got a good deal. But at 8.5 I might ask for return as I very rarely do (and be put off that I must pay return ship for many sellers).

Probably he just missed it with a cursory grade instead of thorough inspection.

Hi

Bought from one of the biggest dealers - graded VF+ 8.5 and described as "Nova Scotia copy glossy !" No mention of any defects.

Their exclamation mark not mine!

I think I will raise with them.

Many thanks for all comments.

.... it was probably bag graded in a larger group or possibly occurred in shipping...... but yes, even 6.0 is ambitious for that one...... but it does have nice eye appeal. GOD BLESS....

If it came from where I think..... it would be the most hassle-free return experience ever...... they're very cool about that. GOD BLESS....

Looks to me like the copy that sold on Comic Connect.

That's the one. Nicely packed in a mylar with label confirming grade and description.

No worries, I am able to return at my cost from the UK!

Apparently grading is subjective.

Grading MAY be subjective, but I don't think it is that subjective.

I think I would send CC photos and ask them if they honestly would grade that as an 8.5.

You should NOT be out anything on that being labeled an 8.5.

Sent them the photos. Their response was to advise me that grading was subjective and that is why they offered returns.

I have responded to say there is a range of credible grading for any comic but that their grade didn't fall within that where such a significant defect.

I advised that return at my cost not acceptable to me where we are dealing not with a difference of opinion but a clear mistake/ oversight on their part.

Will see what they say but more disappointed as had been eagerly awaiting the comic for some weeks.

Late to the party here, but the chips out of the top spine and lower corner would keep this out of 8.5 on their own.

But that is an odd looking spine split - it doesn't have ragged edges, and looks more like a clean cut. I wonder if it has been sliced by a mylar after grading?

I have sent my email of complaint to CC regarding this issue.

It is in larger golden age Mylar which is not a tight fit so would have been careless. Cover is loose at top staple and my thought is tear caused by movement which you can see when comic is opened.

Anyway I would have thought they would have noticed/checked before shipping.

Cheers all

I can confirm that comicconnect have resolved very quickly and appropriately without any angst.

Issues happen and it is how they are dealt with which often generates the most goodwill.

I am happy to say my initial disappointment with the comic has not soured my view of comicconnect and would positively promote their service.

Thanks again for all comments.

Mikey
