So this was not put in limbo? I though a few days ago the future of the show was in question.

The destination is changing due to the strong pilot test reactions. The show is not being put on hold.

THR: Marvel's 'New Warriors' Won't Air on Freeform, Series Will Be Shopped Elsewhere (Exclusive)

Quote

The pilot — which stars Baby Daddy grad Derek Theler as Mister Immortal and This Is Us' Milana Vayntrub as fan-favorite Squirrel Girl — is said to have tested through the roof and caught the attention of high-level Disney executives. Insiders note that Freeform — which is expanding original programming to four nights a week in 2018 — could not find a slot for the show next year as it had originally intended. Marvel then asked for New Warriors back as the comic book powerhouse wants it to premiere in the new year. Freeform obliged.

"We are extremely excited about Marvel’s New Warriors and look forward to finding the perfect partner to launch the series with in 2018,” said Dan Buckley, president of Marvel Entertainment.

Marvel's NEW WARRIORS Reportedly Designed To Be A Defenders-Style TV Franchise; Who Could Be A Part Of It?

As part of The Hollywood Reporter's article on the departure of the upcoming comedy show Marvel's New Warriors from the Freeform Netowrk, they had a few interesting pieces of information that some reports initially overlooked. Specifically, they reported that Marvel can only shop new shows to Disney-owned networks and services (which Marvel reported back to THR as being innacurate), which would rule out potential new ventures with Netflix outside of their current shows, as well as the news that Marvel wants a two-season order for whichever new home the show would land at. Of the small pieces buried later in the article however the most interesting was a report that it could be what THR referred to as "Marvel TV 2.0".

Specifically, it was that the show could have "the ability to feature multiple spinoffs similar to the company's Netflix arrangement", which would indicate that New Warriors could be used to backdoor-pilot other Marvel heroes into their own MCU series. This report is similar to statements that were made made by VP of Production for Freeform Karey Burke, back when the show was originally set to be released on the cable network:

"The characters they've chosen are all really singular and could each carry the show that they're on. They're bound together as a band of underdogs for as long as we choose with this show but it's conceptually tailor-made for spinoffs."

That's sounding like Hulu or Disney Streaming 2019.

But isn't Runaways the only Hulu show at this point from Marvel?  From what I hear that show is reported to be very faithful to the source material. So future season may be limited or would need to be fresh material very quickly.

Has Marvel's NEW WARRIORS Series Already Been Picked Up For A Second Season At A New Network?

Quote

Since Marvel withdrew the series from Freeform earlier this year, people have wondered where New Warriors, with guesses ranging from it joining Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D and other prospective superhero comedies like The Greatest American Hero, to joining the young-adult skewed show of Runaways  on streaming service of Hulu (produced by ABC Signature Studios, who is also producing New Warriors).

In addition, reports from The Hollywood Reporter have added that Marvel is looking for a two-season order for the new show, and that they wish for production and filming to resume as soon as January for a 2018 release. On top of all that, it's speculated that New Warriors will be the next big Marvel Television flagship for its own connected sub-universe in the MCU, similar to the Defenders and The Punisher shows on the streaming service Netflix.

Well, it seems that news ought to be coming soon about the prospective future of the show. A few weeks, back, New Warriors showrunner Kevin Biegel tweeted. Apparently just seconds before this tweet, Biegel had posted a slightly altered version, deleted quickly but had one key difference: the original ending had been #tweetedfromabarasIwriteseason2.

NEW WARRIORS Showrunner Dispels Rumors That The Show Has Been Cancelled

Quote

Earlier this week, New Warriors Showrunner Kevin Biegel discussed the topic of Beefsteak, specifically the annual Beefsteak charity event attended by many prominent writers and actors in the Hollwood comedy biz. On Twitter, he mentioned as an aside how writers would often talk about how their pilots hadn't gotten picked up by networks, as the event came during the time of year where networks start making final decisions as to what shows get a shot for the upcoming fall season. Some interpreted the initial phrasing of the tweet to mean that New Warriors had gotten the axe after being pulled from the Freeform network late last year. Biegel was more than happy to dismiss the notion, however (especially when the tweet was misunderstood by the host of Beefsteak, Matt Selman).

Marvel is still pursuing New Warriors for it's planned 2018 release, wherever that may be.

Reportedly Marvel is now limited to platforms owned by Disney itself, so while Netflix will continue to air and produce its current housing of Marvel shows, we won't see that kind of deal made with an outside company anytime soon. Whether that means it could end up at partially-owned Disney ventures like Hulu (which, should the Fox deal go through, Disney would gain a majority stake in in 2019), return to Freeform, or possibly make it's way to the prime-time big leagues at ABC (who were also the home of Kevin Biegel's show Cougar Town for six seasons).

It's also been speculated that, while outside Marvel's intended 2018 release date window, that it could end up on Disney's upcoming digital streaming platform, (which already has one Marvel show announced as being in development for the service, as well as multiple Star Wars television series).

Trademark Activity Indicates An Announcement About Marvel's NEW WARRIORS TV Show May Be Coming

Quote

As pilot season begins to draw to a close, and early renewals and pickups are starting to kick up amongst the major cable and broadcast networks, it seems a new Marvel show may be among this upcoming new slate. Announced almost out of nowhere last year as part of Freeform's slate of originals, New Warriors was set to herald Marvel Television's entrance into a straight-up comedy series, and, according to The Hollywood Reporter, was planned to launch a whole slate of new shows, akin to the six Marvel shows that form the Defenders-verse on Netflix. However, in November, the show was pulled by Marvel from the network after Freeform could not find a spot for the show in 2018, which Marvel has (as of their last official statement on the show) still committed to. Aside from minor mentions on social media (such as the cast gathering at star Derek Theler's house), the cast and crew of the show have largely kept quiet on specific updates on the project.

However, now it seems that news on the project could be very near on the horizon. According to the United States Patent and Trademark Office, among the recent trademarks registered by Marvel are trademark registrations for production under both Squirrel Girl and New Warriors. While this could be for separate projects, it is not uncommon for trademarks to be registered when specific characters are being used in a project (for instance, Marvel registered several trademarks for the name 'Iron Spider' for the use in Avengers: Infinity War). However, given the earlier plans to make the New Warriors into a whole franchise, it would not be impossible for the pilot have been redeveloped into two separate projects, a Squirrel Girl show and a New Warriors show The first reports of what would eventually become New Warriors was a report of a Squirrel Girl show back in late 2016 being in development.

The obvious following question would be, then, where would this show (or hypothetical group of shows) go? Freeform and ABC will be both presenting their slates on the same day, May 15th, and while it would not be necessarily impossible for the show to be shopped to another network, the two Disney-owned shows who also already have Marvel shows seem like more likely candidates. It also seems unlikely to expect it to be on the upcoming Disney digital service (which already has at least one yet-untitled Marvel series in development), as that will be arriving in 2019, which would be a significant departure from Marvel's plan to launch the show in 2018.

Same, I thought and episode had been screened and shopped at some point.

A quick Wikipedia scroll says something along the lines of no network wanting to pick it up and it's changed "hands" a few times.

What Happened To Marvel's New Warriors TV Show? (December 2018)

New-Warriors-TV-Show-Cast.jpg?q=50&fit=c

Quote

Has Marvel's New Warriors show been canceled? Back in August 2016, there were reports that Marvel and ABC were developing a half-hour comedy series, centered on Doreen Green a.k.a. the Unbeatable Squirrel Girl. Two years on, though, news about this series seems to have petered out, and sadly it's increasingly looking as though New Warriors may have been quietly canceled.

Marvel Television has had something of a rough year. Although Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was renewed for both a sixth and seventh season, they're only going to run for 13 episodes apiece. Netflix has pulled the plug on no less than three of their Marvel shows; even the flagship Marvel Netflix series, Daredevil, has been canceled. Moreover, Marvel Studios is preparing to launch their own range of big-budget limited series on the Disney Plus streaming service, which has the effect of making the existing TV shows feel like even more of an afterthought to the MCU.

The TV arm of Marvel Entertainment could really do with a big win, and New Warriors could well be it. A pilot was said to have tested extremely well with audiences in 2017 (according to The Hollywood Reporter it even caught the eye of Disney executives). Unfortunately, there's been no news about this series for quite some time.

Freeform commissioned a New Warriors pilot, which reportedly tested well. They originally planned to premiere the series in April 2018, but then something went wrong. There were reports that Freeform had been unable to find room in its 2018 programming slate for the comic book-based TV series - but these seemed rather odd, given the same reports claimed Freeform was keen enough to fight hard for the Marvel content in the first place. Whatever the truth may be, apparently Freeform offered Marvel a spot in 2019, but the House of Ideas was keen to see New Warriors hit the small screen a lot sooner than that. So the New Warriors partnership between Marvel and Freeform came to an end.

Unfortunately, it's believed that these plans were complicated by decisions made at an executive level in Disney. The parent company was in the early stages of planning out content for their streaming service, and was no longer keen on competitors acquiring their content. There were reports that Marvel Television was no longer allowed to shop outside of Disney; although these have been denied, it's worth noting that no new Marvel TV series have been approved outside of Disney since New Warriors was pulled from Freeform.

COULD NEW WARRIORS END UP ON DISNEY PLUS?

There's been a lot of speculation that New Warriors was pulled from Freeform because Disney wanted it for their upcoming streaming service, Disney Plus. It's easy to understand why this theory gained traction; there are apparent inconsistencies in the public reports, such as the fact Freeform was apparently keen enough to compete for New Warriors and yet couldn't find a slot for the show. Meanwhile, the accounts that Disney execs were impressed with the pilot seem to add credence to this theory. There is a significant problem with this idea, though. Marvel has consistently insisted it wanted New Warriors to air in 2018, and indeed even the cast seem to have been hoping for that. Disney Plus, however, has always been expected to launch next year - which would make this ambition seem rather odd. Far from resolving any inconsistencies, this idea simply creates a new one.

So this could be a scheduling victim while Disney+ was being lined up. Which could just mean a delayed release versus killing the project.
