A ‘Black Lightning’ TV Series Is in Development from Greg Berlanti

Another day, another superhero series developed by Greg Berlanti–but it’s a good thing, right? The super-producer of DC TV series (all but Fox’s Gotham, at the moment) has his eyes set on another comic property, Black Lightning, and he’s partnering up with The Game and Being Mary Jane creators (and husband-wife team) Mara Brock Akil and Salim Akil. The series is currently being shopped to the networks, and if picked up, it would make Black Lightning the first black superhero to lead a series on traditional television–DC’s Vixen is on the CW Seed app (though appearing in live-action as a supporting character), and Marvel’s Luke Cage will of course start streaming on Netflix in late September.

According to Deadline, the series will be written by the Akils, and will focus on Jefferson Pierce, who has hung up his superhero suit and given up his vigilante work until his daughter starts her own pursuit of justice. Coupled with a rise in gang activity and more, Pierce decides to make his return as the legendary Black Lightning.

Green lighted!

I hope they make this show with a 70s retro feel. But something tells me it will prolly be more of a modern teenage show ala Arrow/Flash.

Still, as one of the only 4 black superheroes in the 70s to come out from both Marvel and DC, this is a loooooong time coming!

Dont mess it up DC!!

BOOM!

THE BLACK LIGHTNING Pilot Moves To The CW

UPDATE: It’s confirmed by THR: The Black Lightning pilot is moving to The CW! THR also notes that this is the sixth of six CW pilot orders, which means high-profile Charmed and Lost Boys projects may have to wait a while. Here’s the original story:

Some bad news and good news to come from Deadline regarding the TV pilot based on DC Comics’ Black Lightning.

The bad news is it sounds like FOX passed on making a pilot for the series, which might not be too surprising considering the X-Men project as well as DC Comics properties Gotham and Lucifer.

The possibly good news is that according to Deadline, there are “discussions underway” for the project – coming from super-producer Greg Berlanti as well as Mara Brock Akil and Salim Akil – to make a move to The CW. Riverdale did something similar, first starting in development at FOX.

CW's BLACK LIGHTNING Character Breakdowns And Synopsis Confirm Thunder And Lightning

The descriptions are for the the four series leads, which include Black Lightning himself (of course) in addition to his daughters Jennifer and Anissa, who, as DC Comics fans will be aware, should eventually suit up as Lightning and Thunder, respectively.

JEFFERSON PIERCE:
“Male, African-American, late 30s to 50. Handsome, fit, with an athletic build. Former 3-time gold medal decathlon winner who is now principal of a high school in South Central Los Angeles. A father figure to his student and hero to the local community. JEFFERSON is charming, charismatic, smart, and has both warmth and humor. He is devoted to his two daughters and remains deeply in love with his ex-wife LYNN. He also has a great passion for justice and a quick temper that he has spent years learning how to control. Think Idris Elba. LEAD.

JENNIFER:
Female. African-American, LEGAL 18 to play 16. JEFFERSON’s younger daughter. JENNIFER is a scholar athlete; beautiful with a lean, athletic runner’s build. She is the entitled feminist of the Pierce family. Independent and outspoken with a wild streak. SERIES REGUALR, ASP.

ANISSA:
Female. African-American, to play 22. JEFFERSON’s elder daughter. Beautiful, quick-witted and intelligent; intense and passionate. ANISSA has a great respect for her father. ANISA balances the demands of medical school with her duties as a part time teacher at JEFFERSON’s school. SERIES REGULAR, ASP.

LYNN: Female, African-American, mid 30s to 50. Exudes confidence and intelligence. Beautiful, but not to be trifled with. Can exhibit both great emotional depth as well as a flirtatious, mischievous side. SERIES REGULAR, ASP.

They've also included a synopsis, which provides us with some idea of what expect from the pilot and the overall plot of the show:

“Black Lightning centers on Jefferson Pierce. He made his choice: He hung up the suit and his secret identity years ago, but with a daughter hellbent on justice and a star student being recruited by a local gang, he’ll be pulled back into the fight as the wanted vigilante and DC legend Black Lightning.”

As part of a broader story about diversity in TV hiring, Deadline reported today that The CW's Black Lightning pilot will be directed by writer and executive producer Salim Akil.

The project, which was developed by The Flash and Supergirl executive producer Greg Berlanti for FOX, moved to The CW after FOX passed on the pilot -- the same series of moves made by the Archie Comics adaptation Riverdale around this time last year.

The pilot will be co-produced by Mara Brock Akil, Sarah Schechter, and Salim Akil, based on the character created by Tony Isabella and Trevor Von Eeden. Akil is set to write. Black Lightning, if a series order is given, would be Berlanti’s fifth DC-based superhero series on the network and would be the first to star a black superhero as the title star.

The CW has found its Black Lightning hero in a familiar face.

Superhero drama BLACK LIGHTNING, from uberproducer Greg Berlanti and wife/husband production duo Mara Brock Akil and Salim Akil, is currently considered the 9th most likely pilot to be picked up to series according to 'The Hollywood Reporter (THR).'  THR ranked pilots from across all networks.  After Fox TV passed on the drama, Greg Berlanti brought the pilot to the CW, where his company has five other shows.  THR sources say the show could be eyed for a mid-season run.

The pilot stars Cress Williams as the title character Black Lightning/ Jefferson Pierce.  In this version Pierce is a high school teacher and retired superhero raising two daughters.  Black Lightning wields his powers for justice once again as street gangs threaten his students.   The cast also includes China Anne McClain and Nafessa Williams.  In the 1970s, Black Lightning was the first DC Comics superhero of African descent to headline his own comic book.

Not the best preview I've seen but it does look different enough that it could get a following.  Didn't like the costume at all.

Agreed with that. Kind of reminded me of the Electro costume in the Garfield Spider-Man 2.

Black Lightning: Trailer, Character Guide, SDCC Details, and More News

Quote

The Black Lightning panel at San Diego Comic-Con will take place on Saturday, July 22 at 4:50 pm. We expect more news then.

The show was originally in development at Fox, but now the series is heading to the CW's already crowded superhero schedule.  Black Lightning isn't on the CW's Fall 2017 schedule, so expect this to air during the mid-season time when their other superhero shows are on hiatus. Most likely in January of 2018.
