Godzilla 2 Recruits Krampus Screenwriters Michael Dougherty, Zach Shields

Quote

The King of Monsters will be making a comeback in 2019 when Legendary and Warner Bros. roll out Godzilla 2. The monster flick will see the atomic behemoth wreak havoc on another poor, unsuspecting metropolis in the aftermath of Godzilla (2014). So far, a series of crew changes have led fans to worry over the film’s fate, but now the studios are putting those fears at rest with a new announcement. Godzilla 2 has tapped Krampus screenwriters Michael Dougherty and Zach Shields to treat its ---script.

According to Variety, the two writers will pen Godzilla 2 and help brainstorm storylines for the franchise’s future. Sources told the site that Legendary is prepping a writers room for creators to develop the company’s impending “Godzilla-King Kong” movie universe.

Rumored Godzilla 2 Director Revealed

Quote

Yesterday, Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. updated fans on the fate of Godzilla 2 when they announced two screenwriters for the film. Michael Dougherty and Zach Shields will treat the ---script for the monstrous sequel, but one of the two will be doing more than just writing. According to an exclusive report from Screencrush, Godzilla 2 will be directed by Dougherty.

Of course, Dougherty is no stranger to the director’s chair. He helmed Krampus and Trick ‘r Treat for Legendary and even worked on screenplays for Superman Returns and X2. Sources for the site confirmed the director’s involvement after Gareth Edwards pulled out of the project. Edwards directed the first Godzilla flick but was forced to remove himself from the sequel after being tapped to helm Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. His split from Legendary was said to be an amicable one, but it did leave the studio without a director for Godzilla 2.

Now if we can just have more Godzilla in a Godzilla movie.

The GODZILLA Sequel Finally Has A Title And King Kong May Want To Watch His Back

2783728329.jpg

In a press release announced the hiring of three veteran production executives to its feature film division, Legendary Pictures revealed the title of the upcoming Godzilla sequel. Gareth Edwards won't be at the helm of the follow-up, but it sounds like we can still expect big things to come as it's going to be called Godzilla: King of Monsters. King Kong will surely have something to say about that, right?

It's in 2020 that those two are set to clash on the big screen, and that could be why Legendary has given Godzilla the title of "King." While it's unlikely that these two are going to fight for the right to hold that moniker, this does a great job of setting the stage to make their encounter even more epic.

What's the best Godzilla movie? Every one I've seen is either really cheesy, or just plain awful.

Just kidding. I saw Rodey's recommendation list, and liked this one.

For me, I always enjoyed 'Destroy All Monsters'. But what usually comes up as top movies are:

- Godzilla: Final Wars (2004)

- Return of Godzilla (1984)

- Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster (1964)

- Godzilla vs. Destroyah (1995)

- Godzilla vs. Hedorah (1971)

- Invasion of Astro-Monster (1965)

Here is the Screen Rant list of 2016, from worst to best.

Every Godzilla Movie Ever, Ranked Worst to Best

10. Destroy All Monsters (1968)

9. Return of Godzilla (1984)

Godzilla-1985-poster-red.jpg

8. Godzilla vs. Monster Zero (1965)

I feel #10 should be #8. But this looks to be a good list.

Once again I recommend #9. Return of Godzilla (1984).

In fact it should be higher.

It reinvented Godzilla and took him back to his roots like Dark Knight Returns took Batman back to his roots, not to mention a 30 years older Raymond Burr is back on the scene.

RETURN OF GODZILLA (1984)

By the end of the Showa series, Godzilla was a far cry away from his original design. Initially depicted as a destructive force of nature, he had been turned into a mighty savior who fought other creatures in order to protect Earth. By the time the mid-80s rolled around, it had come time to return Godzilla to his roots; it was time to make him a villain again. It led to the most serious Godzilla film since the original 1954 version, titled Return of Godzilla, or Godzilla 1985 for Western audiences.

Set to the backdrop of the Cold War, the story is dour, grim even as Godzilla leaves nothing but death and destruction in his wake. There are no other monsters for him to fight here, no goofy plot about aliens. It is simply a classic man vs. nature story in which nature is a personified as a 300 ft. prehistoric beast that rains fire from above. Though it may not be as much fun to watch as other entries on this list, Return of Godzilla is a milestone for rejuvenating the franchise and spawning the beginning of the Heisei series of films.

‘Stranger Things’ Breakout Millie Bobby Brown to Star in ‘Godzilla’ Sequel

Stranger Things breakout Millie Bobby Brown is getting a monster hunter upgrade: from the Demogorgon to the King of Monsters. Legendary has recruited the young actress to star in their upcoming Godzilla sequel Godzilla: King of the Monsters. The project is just ramping up, but it’s off to a promising start with Trick ‘r Treat and Krampus helmer Michael Dougherty on board to direct from a -script he co-penned with Krampus scribe Zach Shields.

Godzilla is Brown’s first feature role and first major gig after earning a whole lot of love as Eleven in Netflix’s smash sensation Stranger Things. Brown earned Screen Actors Guild and People’s Choice Award nominations for her breakout turn as the tiny telepathic badass, in addition to popping up just about everywhere with her adorable co-stars, from on-stage performances to late-night sketches. Stranger Things Season 2 kicked off production late last year and is slated to return in 2017.

With Godzilla I thought it was good with the Godzilla, and Bryan Cranston parts. It got weak when they focused on Aaron Taylor-Johnson. It was like two different movies and they tried to piece them together.

GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS Officially Wraps Principal Photography

Director Mike Dougherty has taken to Twitter to announce that filming has officially wrapped on Legendary's upcoming Godzilla sequel, the tentatively titled Godzilla: King of the Monsters.

The film isn't slated to open until March 22, 2019, so it'll probably be quite some time before we see any sort of footage from the film as Dougherty and company head into an extensive post-production period. Also, based on how they rolled out Kong: Skull Island these past two years, it's probably a safe bet that the first teaser trailer will more likely than not be reserved for San Diego Comic-Con 2018.

The upcoming sequel, which will also serve as a precursor to 2020's Godzilla vs. Kong, stars Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga, Millie Bobby Brown, Ken Watanabe, Charles Dance, Sally Hawkins, Bradley Whitford, O'Shea Jackson Jr., Thomas Middleditch, Aisha Hinds, and Zhang Ziyi.

Next summer, the world will get another look at what Godzilla has to offer when his latest film goes live. Godzilla: King of the Monsters promises to follow the kaiju as he encounters a slew of his famously deadly contemporaries, and those who attended the 2018 Licensing Expo were hyped about the sequel’s premiere. Toho Company had a booth at the Las Vegas event, and it was there a special promo reel for Godzilla: King of the Monsters was shown. The clip doesn’t show many new footage but makes sure to highlight a few points.

For one, the promo stresses how much money the Godzilla debut made worldwide. When the 2014 film went live, it secured an impressive gross. The film opened to more than $93 million domestically and earned over $200 million in the U.S. during its run. Overseas, the movie raked in nearly $330 million over its lifetime. Godzilla was the 13th highest-grossing film domestically in 2014 as it edged out films like 22 Jump Street, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Interstellar.

Secondly, the promo reminds audiences of who Godzilla will be messing with in his sequel. After his first MUTO encounter, the King of the Monsters will be faced with iconic creatures like Rodan, Mothra, and King Ghidorah in 2019. So, if you thought the first Godzilla movie was intense, Toho wants you to know you’ve not seen anything yet.
