Marvel Australian Price Variants

Afternoon :)

I started this thread nearly three years ago now and at the start the intention was just to show pictures my old ASM collection. I posted this image, which was an extract from my old ASM  'wants list' book that I used to carry around with me back in the day:

3.png.ca5fb186621ad079cb15a4d736fe02ae.png

I collected the AUS copies from 2008 and completed the set around 4 years later as I recall. At the time there was zero interest in them, even from my old ASM completist chums (although one of them went on to buy the set when I sold up some years later).

So this ASM list has stood for around ten years. Since then, I have documented over 1,000 AUS price variants in this thread and other sites have cropped up with information about them (notably Ben Noble's site). If you compare the ASM set to the proven AUS date range you can see that issues 340, 385 and 409 are eligible to exist:

1.PNG.b08bcce651b06b543d677d120810608b.PNG

2.PNG.145c140c33f9bcc4d93d37bccd6d8e77.PNG

And yet here we are ten years later, with much more interest in AUS copies, and still no sign of them. There is no obvious reason why the AUS Jan 1991 dated ASM #340 should not exist. It's a popular title - no reason for the absence. For issue #409, 6 other titles have a March 1996 AUS copy. So why not Spidey? Only three titles currently have an April 1994 issue proven, so you can see why ASM #385 may not exist.

The point of all this is that it seems that there will be titles with unexplained single issue gaps, as well as the more expected bigger gaps (e.g. where a title has no 1996 phase II books). If true, it means that it will be exceedingly difficult to prove a final, error free issue list.

My work on Marvel pence copies went on for much longer than this AUS work and I was as close to certain that they would stay at 3,017 copies until two additional early copies materialised as if by magic recently, proving my old comic adage that you can never say never. A few of the AUS titles are close to being full now on my capture sheet with only one or two copies missing. What will be interesting to see is whether those issues are absent by design or not. If ASM can have three issues absent within the proven date range, then others surely will too.

Anyway, added a few more this morning so we're now up to 1,066

All good fun :)

Are there actual x-force 2 and 3 without the AUS sticker?

If not I would argue these are AUS editions but with an *.  🤨

Haven't found any yet. The stickers look 'official' but I don't count them as they've been added after the production event. No different to a price stamp really, wouldn't you say?

I added images of X-Factor #127 and 128 to the files this morning, care of eBay:

127.jpg.b7b72e24e06a08cbea1cbb38e8776813.jpg 128.jpg.94721764ed39214e5c7b0d9dda52f772.jpg

Issue #127 is a $3.20 priced issue as most October 1996 dated issues are and #128 is priced at $2.75 also in line with other titles. Price up, price down, books cancelled.

I have 48 of the potential 50 X-Factor issues logged now - only #98 and #124 are missing:

xf2.PNG.b76230aaa51e915a7766112b414a735d.PNG

#98 is a first wave AUS April 1994 issue so may not exist as only 3 titles have an AUS issue for this date so far as noted in my previous post.

There is no reason why issue #124 shouldn't exist so an image may turn up at some point :wishluck:

Here's what the 48 X-Factor images look like in the files. I'm toying with adding them to the Gallery section of the boards so we can all see them in all their glory...

So for me only.... technically, I couldn't call them AUS price variants as the actual issue is in US dollars, covered with what I would agree with you an official AUS price sticker.  That said, knowing those are out there and/or until an XForce 2 or 3 shows up with an AUS price point, I would still include them in my own personal collection as AUS variants.  Like i said, with an ** .

I'm sure the folks at Grand Comics Database would agree with us from a technical standpoint as well.

And it's all for fun anyway.

So curious where this issue of Beavis and Butthead falls?  It's the Australian variant best I can see.  I would need to see the inside to determine if same as Direct US edition.  I don't see a separate Australian/New Zealand series on GCD.  Thoughts?

I have an investigations folder on Beavis & Butthead and I believe that to be a local Australian reprint which puts it out of scope.

The 'AUST' on the barcode with the NZ price is the giveaway:

26.PNG.e04118534174217daa201992c72e7521.PNG

Here's issue 27 from my files which has the same AUST / NZ format:

887847978_BB27AUS.PNG.a8f1eddf174f83271d7e41c9fe7f629e.PNG

Here are the US Direct and Newsstand 27's:

1070793643_BB27USDirect.PNG.55d958c8762b6f74aeb64019fdd748d9.PNG 56602290_BB27USNews.PNG.005190672b0aab8281d3b140b5a1f037.PNG

If the book was a genuine AUS price variant it would just mirror the US newsstand barcode and have a single AUS price.

Here is the indicia of the AUST/NZ #27 which clearly shows the book was printed in Australia:

648968255_BeavisButthead27AUSNZIndicia.thumb.jpg.1241a9f368b3ba8a20f78068feee01d5.jpg

So as it stands, there are no Beavis & Butthead AUS price variants that I have found. And it's not uncommon for the GCD to not have foreign reprints listed, especially when they are as scarce as these AUST/NZ copies seem to be.

Keep going Redsox - it's nice to have something to discuss / input :)

Yes, I have that on the list already so there's at least two of them Nes! It's a title with lots of missing issues though, which is odd. You'd think Spidey titles would manifest more quickly wouldn't you.

Only 7 of the possible 50 so far have shown themselves:

smaus1.thumb.PNG.f7f23e9afeb1fffe43eb8f4fbd38a515.PNG

No issues from 3-31 yet and only 3 from the second phase:
