This post is for @revat who is a big Darkhawk fan and has mentioned that he would like to see an AUS copy of that title. So far, we haven't seen one.

Darkhawk ran for 50 issues from (US) March 1991 to April 1995. This means that Darkhawks could only exist in the first wave of AUS books and, given the three month date delay, #1 would be dated AUS June 1991 if it existed. A total of 35 Darkhawk issues could exist as AUS copies on this basis, with #35 being dated AUS April 1994. The remaining copies would fall in the gap between waves, and not reach the second wave.

We know that 'newsstand' copies with barcodes but no Curtis Circulation 'CC's do not appear to have AUS variants. This example of Dr Strange shows what I mean:

23.thumb.jpg.cc9a01ed716ff72c8ca4fb457d163fc7.jpg

Note that it has the 'newsstand' barcode but no 'CC' in the price / date box as you would expect. In every case that I find this scenario (newsstand barcode / no CC), no AUS variants have been found for that title.

If we look at a newsstand Darkhawk we see that the newsstand copy has the 'CC' and is therefore 'eligible' to have an AUS copy:

13.thumb.jpg.3bdba972391e684d1722c1b533fec625.jpg

And yet not one of the 35 possible candidates has materialised in my search so far. That doesn't mean that one won't of course - a few of the 99 confirmed titles have one or just a few confirmed copies. But it's highly unlikely that one would not have shown up at this stage.

So, alas, it looks like Revat will never get his wish. A huge number of titles, many 'high profile', have yet to yield an AUS copy though, so he's in good company.

All good fun :)

an amazing an informative post.  I will of course, hold out hope.  Even though it seemed likely that Darkhawks (at least a few of the early issues) would have been included in the Mark Jewelers insert comics, none had been found until maybe 3-4 years ago, and there were just 2 of those, and only two copies so far.  I know its not the same thing, but it gives one hope.

I don't know if its been asked or answered before (and if it has I apologize), but is it safe to assume that New Zealand also got Australian edition comics during the relevant time periods?  There's a much greater chance that I go to New Zealand in the near future than Australia, though I realize population and comicwise, there's way less in New Zealand overall.

I don't know for sure but NZ has a separate dollar currency which is worth less than the AUD. Not a huge difference here days but the differential was bigger when these books were published. So those Australian books on sale in NZ would need a local price change. So maybe there'd be no incentive to import Australain vice US copies?

Ah, I love MJI's :cloud9: Poor old Darkhawk seems to get left out of everything doesn't he!

There's always hope though. In all the years I've been researching comics the one thing I've learned is that patterns can be broken, logic goes out of the window and the unexpected can always be relied upon to become expected, especially when you've staked your reputation on it (I lost mine years ago). What would be cool is an AUS priced Darkhawk with a MJI. Don't bet on it never happening!

I'm with AJD on this. I've never seen anything while searching.

Morning Aussies :)

Two new titles to add this morning. Hurrah!

First up, we have Blaze: Legacy of Blood, a title referred to me by APV collector Paul Nicholls (thanks Paul). Here is number one, with an AUS $2.80 cover price and amended 3 month later cover month:

1.thumb.jpg.f100e97789def5886ef61c95d10b4028.jpg

Cool :)

The title ran for 4 issues but only the first two sit in the confirmed first wave AUS date window. If number 2 does not exist, being an AUS April 1994 cover date book, then there may only be one which would make Highlander very happy I'm sure:

1196568014_blazelob.thumb.PNG.a30fe1530f6287d23e702ba038b66a19.PNG

Next up, Transformers: Generation 2. Here's #1 priced at AUS $4.75 and again with the usual 3 month later cover month:

 1.thumb.jpg.e4a894db61bad5177b150de86d48a4ae.jpg

Nice :)

This title ran for 12 issues but only the first three sit in the confirmed first wave AUS date window. If number 3 does not exist, being an AUS April 1994 cover date book, then there may only be two out there - one and two. I knew I should have been a maths teacher:

transf.thumb.PNG.887d1721b54ddc2ad4f3f53fd9359dad.PNG

One kind ebay seller popped a load of Ghost Rider / Blaze: Spirit's of Vengeance up:

lot.thumb.jpg.a2db40f150130a7f3f3816f74b11d0f9.jpg

lot2.thumb.jpg.1841f194c3ca3a9f3149c3067e654376.jpg

Sooper!

So I am now only missing #13, 17 and 18. But, as we know, 18 may not exist:

grbsov.thumb.PNG.0c135f885b77825d271565b99b5b602f.PNG

Finally, a number of titles are full / nearly full now. One of them is Uncanny X-Men for which I only need confirmation of #277 and 308. Again though, 308 may not exist being an AUS April 1994 book:

uxm.PNG.a07fe9d80e3d8a5b824e2c780b5495ae.PNG

Anyone got one?

Only time will tell.

In the meantime, here are the current scores on the doors:

1147.PNG.af4a245740875e2d7f826f7664c2b04d.PNG

I'll update the confirmed number list soon.

See ya :)

Evening :)

Another tip off from Paul Nicholls - an ebay lot showing Spider-Man Classics #1-8 :headbang:

859734604_1-8Lot.jpg.10e256920e8aa62f4d600b85a39498c2.jpg

Similar scenario here to the previous posts - if the AUS April 1994 copy doesn't exist (number 10 in this case) then this set is complete:

1150.thumb.PNG.ad941116eb80fcb27508ce905ed2b732.PNG

Here's #9 by the way:

9b.jpg.ba0a3e580b20dc850933a535c3d82b24.jpg

I'm seeing those stickered bar codes quite a lot lately

And odd to see the Curtis Circulation 'CC' on the number one there:

1414567048_1-5Lot.thumb.jpg.1f0d4139233b4c91cb81d2825980ec08.jpg

Very uncommon for an AUS priced copy

Anyway, 1,150 confirmed APVs :)

Afternoon :)

X-Force number 2 and 3 are currently absent without leave....

xf.thumb.PNG.8f1eb553b17ef839b98966649240a03e.PNG

...but we do know that stickered versions exist:

 1231122951_X-Force2PriceStickercrop.jpg.4b91ae67b7abbc5f02055efce3e8ba0a.jpg 2133944397_X-Force3PriceStickercrop.jpg.9862af331ce63b202f6b95aa55c0bf09.jpg

The stickers have an official look to them, and multiple copies have been sighted (I have a few of them in the files).

Our AUS friend in hiding Paul Nicholls sent me this new example earlier today - Marvel Milestone Edition ASM #1 (US Red Logo Version):

1123210002_MMEASM1AUSCopyB.jpg.cfa8f2f37f3e468327387959563ccd41.jpg

Now that sticker looks very official doesn't it. And, again, multiple copies have been sighted.

The stickered copy is identical to the US Red Logo copy (multiple MME variants exist) and has the same front, back and barcode:

AUS Stickered Copy

1477987878_MMEASM1AUS.thumb.jpg.1b195b8eb2ede3a063cebde4fec63db3.jpg  1742316986_MMEASM1AUSb.jpg.38fc1f50f8fe139481455a01a5ab97c6.jpg

It's interesting also that the AUS sticker has the Curtis Circulation 'CC' on it, which AUS copies rarely do.

As it stands, I won't be adding this as a new title as it was not originally printed as an Australian Price Variant. Even if the sticker were to be confirmed as an 'official' process, it still wouldn't meet the criteria for inclusion in my opinion.

Does anyone reading have a view on this?

I'm with you in general, I NEVER consider the sticker 'variants' to be real.  Which is not to say that they are not real (they certainly could be), but just that it would be too easy to create it on one's own and lie about it.  Similar stickers exist with the DCUniverse UPC.

Yes. They're fascinating, but stay in their own little folder for now.

Evening :)

I've found a new magazine title and, surprise surprise, it's another Conan one - Conan the Savage which ran for 10 issues from US August 1995 to May 1996.

conan.gif.8d95aeb02ef5969b04c4dbf463b92ae6.gif

If we transpose the title on to our chart, the last 4 issues creep into the second wave as follows (where all AUS books have the same cover dates as their US counterparts):

cts.thumb.PNG.10fc56659160ea77fbf4d12a03f4fb8e.PNG

Accordingly, and if the title fits into the date range for all known Marvel AUS price variants - comic and magazine - we should only have issues 7 to 10 as APVs.

The picture I found online shows issues 1-10 and, lo and behold, only 7-10 are APVs. The system works:

1-10.thumb.jpg.34793bfc112f580d52ffd2451bf4279b.jpg

The picture isn't that great but if you zoom in you can see the AUS wording and price:

7.jpg.d6f9e02edccfd50cc120fef4ea45a0ac.jpg  8.jpg.d3d293e41839766ee835a7682cacee4e.jpg

9.thumb.jpg.46c9848617acc1144ee008ff013d1a53.jpg      10.jpg.a538e5cabfbe804271865d7640b4441d.jpg

It looks like the printed price is AUS $4.90, the same, coincidentally, as the retailers price stickers on them!

I can't find any other copies online at the moment so will have to wait for better images to turn up to be sure.

Still, a new magazine title, 4 new APV's to hunt for and the only Marvel magazine title so far to break the AUS second wave.

Sooper :)

The addition of #89 above takes us up to 39 of 40 possible Web of Spideys.

Only number 88 is missing now:

And here is the latest Confirmed APV Issue List

  • 1,152 comics of 1,702 possible covering 101 titles
  • 67 magazines of 84 possible covering 3 titles

Here's a good one from the boys over at wordpress.

I've been missing Captain America #410 for ages, the only APV book missing from the first wave for that title (issues 378 to 423).

Cap is one of the few titles with an April 1994 book incidentally, and it doesn't look like any of the 7 possible second wave books exist:

cap.thumb.PNG.767aed05b34b2d814dfb8a2353ad697f.PNG

So only 46 APV's probably exist.

Anyway, here's #410 finally to complete the set:

1859119181_410(407)b.jpg.65e5f2d46e6b5ac1cbef3e640541866b.jpg

The issue number is actually #407 but this is #407:

407.jpg.8b459948817da70fdc0ff18d1413ea97.jpg

So someone clearly added the wrong issue number to the #410 March APV!

I do like a good cock up

Morbius has been a fairly tough APV nut to crack, but the first 12 issues have turned up so far:

morb.PNG.b2d39842cd6c25afa2dba309f8403c5f.PNG

The first 17 potentially exist in the first wave and the title is over before the second wave starts. So 12 confirmed of a maximum 17 as it stands.

Wonder if it will stay that way. 12 is a nice round year-like number isn't it...
