Your Flagship book?

122 posts in this topic

I have been thinking about this ever since Grantley started this thread. This is a tough one because I would consider Phantom Lady 18 to be the one comic that really got me going in the genre I like now, but the copy I currently own will leave me as soon as I can find a better one, so I don't think that it would be my current "flagship" book. All Top 16 and Planet 65 are highly important to me as well and I have copies I feel good about with those.

I am picking my copy of Airboy Volume 4 Number 8 as my flagship book because out of every book I own I think it would be the last one I sell.

Why?

1. I love women in peril covers - Check

2. I prefer when I get to buy a beautiful copy in the raw over encapsulated- Check (although I encapsulated later)

3. Chick strapped to flying contraption is my #1 favorite sub genre- Check

4. Slightly over-sized fat GA comics are really cool- Check

5. Possibly the best copy on the planet- Check

Such great books and stories.

When I was a kid, my parents got me the book Batman: From the Thirties to the Seventies as a Christmas gift. I loved that book to pieces, and I especially loved looking at the cover galleries. One book in particular intrigued me: Batman using what looked like the Joker signal to bring the Joker to the scene. And, as only possible on a comic book cover, the Joker arrives in two vehicles, a Jokermobile and a Joker plane.

I loved that cover so much that a friend's mother, who was an artist, drew the cover for me, and I had her sketch hanging in my room for years. I drooled over that comic forever. I remember going to a comic book show when I was 12, and a dealer had one for 50 bucks in about Fine condition, even though it went for 36 dollars in Mint in that year's guide.

Finally, when I had a steady job, I got a copy from the infamous Danny Cupcake of Fantazia fame. Did I give a that it had undisclosed resto? Not really. It cost me 150 bucks. Still my favorite book.

Pretty neat books in this thread so far. Pretty hard to top a Bat 1, that sweet Frazetta sig story (I was also gonna mention the ink bleed but I see someone beat me to it!!), and a first book bought off the racks which just so happens to be such an AWESOME book. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to post this book again I have shared it several times but this would definitely be considered my, "FLAG"ship book. I remember when I got into GA books I had located an All American 61 and I was enthralled with finding books that had monsters on them or had patriotic covers given how entrenched we were into the war at the time of these books and when the 2 ideas got mixed how cool the covers could be. I had typed in Flag covers and somehow got an image of Our Flag Comics and saw the #5. I instantly put it on my watch list on eBay. Guess what...not a single copy ever popped up. It took me quite a while to learn that this book was pretty tough to locate. I joined the boards and saw 2 different copies and the obsession with finding one became even greater. Finally landed this copy and it was low grade but presented nicely which fit so well into my collection that I had already acquired in the meantime. The fact that the word Flag is in the title is only coincidence :D

great book Gino!I will always remember AllAmerican as your book, remember you showing that off like yesterday.I fell in love with that book.

Thanks gents!! and Porc I would still consider All American 61 to be my personal favorite book in my collection this is aweful close though. The All American is just so near and dear to my heart it's really what sparked my interest in GA to begin with. I put the Our Flag in this thread as it's a better representation of what my collecting focus has turned into over the past few years. It's got everything i like really. The monsters, the GIANT hypo ;), bondage, the eery graveyard scene with a moonlit backdrop, the awesome large logo almost like the earlier DC books which i love, the rarity factor, and let's not forget the hero swooping down which i always liked and he's sporting a stellar Red, White, and Blue costume which i am fascinated with!! All American is still with me though brother and still brings me the same smile it did when i acquired it

think how pretty this one would be if the colors were bright!

Agreed. I'll spruce it up with some magic markers and glitter when I get home from the grocery store tonight.

Always thought this one was neat and a Church to boot. More color would = Mind Blown :D

I would say this one is close to the heart because the search for a decent copy took a very long time.I have always been into black based covers which are harder to find because they show everything.

Not my most expensive book but this definitely represents the core of my collecting interest. Favorite cover and favorite comic book artist from the genre I like most.

This is such a tough call. :ohnoez:

(shrug) The number of flagships in my collection is comparable to Admiral Dewey's Great White Fleet.

For instance, there's this ship-shape Alex Schomburg cover on a classic battle book...

0c862f4c-347b-40a1-8cb8-45f96c424903_zpsqlxvpqss.jpg

...BUT other grail books in my collection are equally loved capital ships:

"Bender" battling the Torch, both on growth hormones from the Schomburg lab...

Kirby's best vacuum cleaner closing the lid on some nasties...

Another Kirby executed aerial stunt that's worth RAVEN about...

And the double whammy of an inseparable team of late blooming flag bearers...

This Cole masterpiece is VITAL ...

More awesome Jack Cole interior & cover art...

A wolf-pack circling my name-sake from a different Cole...

Then there's Creig Flessel channeling Rembrandt in the orient...

And one more Schomburg for the road to finish the war in style over NYC...

And to top it off, this flagship of flagship-art really floats my boat...

My two most significant hobbies are history and comics so this is the book that probably best fits the theme of this thread.
