Not that anyone here falls into this category, but an interesting summary of the Dark Phoenix situation (agree or disagree, it's a reality).

In the age of social media this is the norm, not the exception, there's just more meat to chew on with Dark Phoenix.  I was open about it until they decided to open the review embargo overnight, now I'm fully expecting a train wreck and will be pleasantly surprised if it doesn't happen.

I've often wondered why this doesn't happen with MCU films.  I'm wondering if it's because Marvel keeps such a tight lid on almost everything having to do with production.  Most of the things we're hearing people complain about with Dark Phoenix are things I NEVER hear about any Marvel film ever.  Test screenings?  I assume Marvel does those, but I don't remember ever hearing about how they went.  Going overbudget?  Marvel doesn't even release that stuff, do they?  For whatever reason MCU films just don't have as much production info out there prior to release as Fox films do.

Edward Norton forcing changes to The Incredible Hulk -script as a 'hardcore fan' and then later being uninvited to The Avengers due to his being very difficult to work with occurred between films, and disappeared rapidly.

Thor: The Dark World's director shakeups hardly made it into the news until long after the film came out.

The MCC tampering with Avengers: Age of Ultron leading to Joss Whedon experiencing a semi-nervous breakdown and needing time off from Marvel was long after the film came out that he admitted this (without actually attacking the MCC).

The MCC-Feige breakup happened without a lot of back-and-forth details concerning how Ike Perlmutter was forcing lower budgets which impacted movie breathe and depth came and went.

Ant-Man and Edgar Wright is the closest you come to an eyes-wide-open situation where the MCC and his -script became an on-going situation for a period of time.

These things all happened, and yet the narrative is always about Feige keeping a very tight franchise flow because the actors and stories seem consistent. So the other details are rapidly forgiven most probably because Feige really does love these characters and their source material. So he is always the point of trust throughout it all.

Those two were unavoidable to release to the public because they were staff changes.  But yea, as with all of those other examples you cited the dirt doesn't come out with Marvel until after release, not before it like we're hearing with Dark Phoenix.  Why?  Is Feige just a magic man who does no wrong, or is it the quality of Disney's lawyers?  Disney has been historically notorious for how litigious they can be, so if I had to guess I'd guess it's Disney's lawyers making everyone involved with production sign non-disclosure agreements that are steeply punishing if they're broken.

I think you hit on the strength of the Disney NDA's. When you are dealing with a company that goes after schools if they paint their cartoon characters on their walls meant to make for a friendly student environment, imagine what will happen with someone spilling dirt.

Look at non-MCU films from Disney where all the friction is hidden until long after the box office wraps up. John Carter's executive in-fighting led to a book about the sabotage that took place.

John Carter and the Gods of Hollywood

It took 100 years to bring Edgar Rice Burroughs’ John Carter of Mars to the big screen. It took Disney Studios just ten days to declare the film a flop and lock it away in the Disney vaults. How did this project, despite its quarter-billion dollar budget, the brilliance of director Andrew Stanton, and the creative talents of legendary Pixar Studios, become a calamity of historic proportions?

Nobody from the creative team grumbled in public about the in-fighting until many years later.

Wow the dark Phoenix actors have some pretty terrible recommendations for the next wolverine actor. Hopefully this is not indicative of their knowledge of the characters of xmen.

Sophie Turner recommends Keanu Reeves

Cyclops actor recommends Joe jonas of the jonas brothers (!)

Storm actor recommends Channing Tatum (wtf)

At least director Kinberg talked some sense...he said maybe Tom Hardy or an unknown actor like hugh Jackman was at the time.

Danny Devito is also mentioned but that's obviously a joke...right?

McAvoy did an interview a few months ago talking through the X-Men history and timeline. He was so deep in the lore, hardcore comic book fans would be pleased.

But I like where Matthew Vaughn was looking to go.

They're going to get someone much younger than Tom Hardy since he's 41.

Yeah, by the time Marvel gets around to an actual X-Men movie, hardy might be pushing 50. Plus, wouldn't it be great if they actually found a shorter guy as the perfect Logan?

Tom Hardy is a great actor but a boring choice.  Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury level boring.

Any of the others...I’d liquidate my entire collection.  That money can go collect REIT dividends instead.

I didn't realize this until now because Matthew Vaughn never called this out.

Exclusive: Matthew Vaughn Talks His Plans for First Class Sequels

Quote

With Dark Phoenix opening next week, we chatted with Matthew Vaughn (promoting the Elton John biopic Rocketman) about his original plans for the X-Men: First Class sequels that never came to pass under his direction. How this wouldn’t contradict the Hugh Jackman cameo in First Class is something we didn’t get to address…

ComingSoon.net: If you could have split yourself into two people and still done the “Kingsman” movies but also finished out that “First Class” cycle what would you have done differently?

Matthew Vaughn: "That’s one of the reasons I didn’t continue, because they didn’t listen to me. My plan was “First Class,” then second film was new young Wolverine in the 70’s to continue those characters, my version of the X-Men. So you’d really get to know all of them, and my finale was gonna be 'Days of Future Past'."

"That was gonna be my number three where you bring them all… because what’s bigger than bringing in McKellen and Michael and Stewart and James and bringing them all together? When I finished the 'Days of Future Past' -script with it ready to go I looked at it and said, “I really think it would be fun to cast Tom Hardy or someone as the young Wolverine and then bring it all together at the end.” Fox read 'Days of Future Past' and went “Oh, this is too good! We’re doing it now!” And I said, “Well what do you do next? Trust me you’ve got nowhere to go.” Then they did “Apocalypse” and it’s like… If you flip that ’round even it would have been better. Hollywood doesn’t understand pacing. Their executives are driving 100 miles-per-hour looking in the rear-view mirror and not understanding why they crash."

:frown:

So he would have developed a trilogy with a middle film between First Class and Days of Future Past to build up general audience connection with the characters.

That sounds MUCH better than what we got, and given that his film was better than the ones that have followed I'm inclined to believe that his approach was the superior one.

Although I rank First Class very high on my comic book movie list, I still think Days of Future Past exceeded its overall story. A deep, complex story that comes together.

But I do like what Vaughn was planning, as it would have given general audience viewers more character immersion to connect with the primary roles.

I bet the Fox execs' major sticking point was that Vaughn's version would have involved casting someone other than Hugh Jackman as Wolverine.  They saw one treatment with Jackman and one without and went with the one that would have Jackman in it.

I can't judge Days of Future Past in an unbiased way.  My initial bias was heavily in favor of it based upon my reading of it as an 11-year old.  Later as a teenager I read Bradbury's "A Sound of Thunder" and realized that time travel stories are too complex to tell in any satisfying way without creating paradoxes that should result in alternate realities but never do, so by the time the movie came out I was biased in the opposite direction against the entire idea of such a story.  And as was just the case with Endgame, you can't think about it too hard or the paradoxes start to multiply.

Wait, why would he have re-casted Wolverine at all?  Logan was born in the 19th century and actually appeared in First Class in the 1960s as Hugh Jackman.
